I feel that the best way to use either version of Demon is by way of a crossover between Descent and Fallen. Having the oWoD Demons be literal fallen angels of the literal capital-G God, and the CoD Demons being fallen servants of the mechanical demiurge that somehow usurped the Throne of Heaven. Having two VERY different creature types, with the same name leads to a lot of confusion, but that is part of the fun. Also, it actually gives the Fallen something to do - find out just what the heck happened to the real God. This works as an awesome premise. As to how well it works mechanically...that question I leave for more competent people. :p

PazuzuAzelf Are you a Beast fan if you want to play as a Hero? Because that applies to me.

I sorta agree, I think it would be a much stronger game if it didnt try to fit in COD. Its clearly got ties to the Matrix, Dark City, and even Blade Runner. I would have loved to see where they could have pushed the concept if it wasn't tied into the mythos.

Great review! I kinda love the God Machine because I hate the God Machine. An unknowable system that just does not care about any individual cog.

I really didn't know a lot about this game. Maybe I'll check it out.

I had to laugh when you recommended doing Demon as a one-off. I spent a month reading this game, and it's so big, complex, and full of foreign ideas that I could not keep even the basics of it in my head--though I found it fascinating the whole way. The only way I would do it would be to do a big campaign because there's too much to learn just to play it once. Unfortunately, I've never played it. Did you? The way you talk in your reviews it seems like you've played these games, but you rarely mention what happened in your experience with them. Would love to hear it.

This was an interesting review, but l have some problems with it. Firstly I think your comment about the Classic World of Darkness being too Judeo-Christian centric is inaccurate. Up until the release of Demon the Fallen this was just the world-view of 1 group of denizens of the World of Darkness (the vampires of Western origin. Demon the Fallen seems to support it - but one could postulate this as part of a reality imposed by Mages at some point. Secondly even if the game was, so what. I've played games based around religions & mythologies that I didn't personally subscribe to & never felt like I wasn't being included. The 3rd thing I have to say isn't a complaint, merely an observation. While I agree with you that Demons being escaped parts of the God Machine is kind of weak, I like the idea of the God-Machine. But I like it as a mystery, where nobody, whether they be mere mortals or supernatural beings, has any idea what it is (or in most cases that it even exists until they encounter signs of it).

Instead of a god-machine, would an awakened AI work better?
