Ok so I've gotten some less than savory replies about why I had to split this video into two parts and exactly how bad the editing software is. I have been stuck using Shotcut for the last few videos. It's torture. Every single action makes my computer have a mini stroke and freeze up the entire software for around 5 seconds. Every time I cut the audio. 5 second freeze I add a slide. 5 second freeze I cut the video. 5 second freeze This video took 15 hours of work to get 18 minutes in. That's insane. I'm sorry for cutting it abruptly but I seriously can't take it. I'll release the second part soon. To those of you who will ask why I can't just get a better editing software. That takes WiFi. I have been operating this entire channel with my phone's mobile hotspot. It's hellish, but it should be over soon. The reason why I don't have WiFi currently is complicated and involves a lot of personal issues. But trust me. if I could, I would have gotten it by now. I'm not being lazy, I'm not deliberately trying to milk this one out for clicks and views, and I'm sure as hell not doing this on purpose.

People have found out they are part of a story from just hearing about it from friends, codename or not, and gone after OP's before. Mostly from things like Legal Advice or Nuclear Revenge, but it has happened. The problem comes in when a codename ISN'T used, and the person legally sues for lible (written form of slander/deffimation of character) and wins a case because of the explicit use of their real world name.

I’m less than 2 minutes in and already have that vibe. In my time before becoming a social recluse knew way too many people who would throw “the spectrum” out there as an excuse for their deplorable behavior and when I asked “well if you can actualize that behavior as inappropriate how does that mesh with your reason that as someone in the spectrum you don’t know these things?” Of course I’m over generalizing but to me, I agree, it’s a red flag.

@@jesnemo2677 As someone on the spectrum; I realize a lot of my flaws, but it’s extremely hard to realize in the moment that I’m engaging in toxic behavior. Like OP said, it’s only in hindsight. I actually need to be reminded that I’m doing something that comes across as asshole-y. And usually I have no idea what exactly I’m doing wrong because I don’t know which social cues I missed. And constantly managing it gets tiring and draining. It might sound like people in your experience were using it as an excuse, but it’s also entirely possible that they legit weren’t. Just because someone realizes they have a problem doesn’t make it magically go away. I just hope this makes you push less people away because cutting people off only makes them even more bitter and toxic.

@@wannabehistorian371 I almost made the same damn response lmao but I wanna make an addendum; specifically, I have Asperger's with a side of ADHD for flavor. But I can say for a fact that there ARE plenty of people who use their disabilities as an excuse for shitty behavior. In the end, we need to hold ourselves and others accountable, we need to be able to actually look inward upon ourselves no matter how hard it is in order to improve. Yes, we will always be at a disadvantage because of our neurodivergence, it will still happen, but that doesn't mean we can just rest on our laurels about it. I've seen plenty of people refuse help and dig themselves into a hole because of their disabilities. Shit I've done it myself, even. It took a very long time for me to actually realize that I was the problem and that I was not helping myself. That I was just using my autism as an excuse to not improve because it was easier. I hurt myself a lot because of it, mentally and physically. And I absolutely am not saying it's easy. I'm still working on myself, still stuck in a cycle sometimes. But in the end I had to realize that yes I have mental issues that keep me at a disadvantage as compared to others, but that doesn't mean I'm free of any kind of consequences.

I find it odd that he considered Fire to be the element that’s alien and an asshole. To me, water fits that description more being calm, cool, analytical, and unempathetic. Fire on the other hand would be intense, passionate, and emotional. But that’s just my view on it, I suppose.

Honestly, fire would be all consuming. You’d get a “is it fuel or the enemy” mindset if you were basing a mindset/personality on an honest reflection of an “element”. Water would be good for the mindset of something like the Borg. Taking what it wants in and sweeping all else away or avoiding it, infecting whatever it touches. Earth would be stubborn and very resistant to change. Air would be much like water, except any change to it would be from its surroundings and temporary.

Unless there is more to balance things out, I'm seeing OP as the bigger cause of the conflict. I did watch the whole video. If I didn't I would have been mentioning the length of this video and the airship one like everyone else who posted before finishing. The OP mentioned this but then when there are clearly issues makes the decision to make them worse. They said something, saw that the person was getting upset still, and didn't do anything about it. The OP keeps talking up how good they are but then was a bad player. Yes the DM wasn't perfect but someone who was actually such a better DM as OP claims could have handled it better. Instead it seems they handled it like a jerk and made it worse. There might be more information in the second half that changes it but so far it seems like an outsider Dm who was trying to get to know a new group was crapped on by the groups other DM who thought they were better. There were multiple plot threads being put out there, and connections for the new players characters to help move things along. Even if OP is 1000% a better DM it doesn't stop the things they did so far from making them a bad player.

So far, I really don't see why Steven should be a bad DM. Telling the group after the session that he has planned this differently doesn't seem too much of a problem to me. In fact, I would praise him for just going along with it. I mean, it sounds like a pretty good adventure so far, and like good DMing. DM plans for one thing, group doesn't follow, DM improvises on the spot. Maybe there's more on the second part.

Yeah, he even allows the party to abuse the Command spell (one word should not be enough to be so specific and its duration of 1 round is obviously just 6 seconds, not nearly enough to have the desired effect; and if it was Suggestion instead, it would have been hard to make it seem not harmful) just to accommodate their role-playing. So far, he's doing a good job while the players seem to be way too concerned getting their own plot ideas executed to bother checking properly if their plan works the way they intended it, mechanics-wise. To me, the players are more problematic than the DM at this point.

Yeah this is shitty. I am on the spectrum and I get it, but if it takes me a few days to recognize I did wrong, I go talk to that person I feel I wronged. You know... Like an adult. But not only that. The type of characters people play can say a lot about a person at times. A part of them sneaks through. I have played asshole characters before but I always try to make it so that the character works with the others. I am not a fan of playing asshole characters so I try to balance them out with levity and certain things they have a soft spot for as well as not always being right. A group that is heavy on RP combined with characters who are assholes, says a lot about a fantasy they can't play out there. It often leads to toxic behavior.

Do you remember how frustrated a teacher might get trying to explain a concept they've understood for 15+ years to someone who is still trying to grasp it? The frustration comes from the fact that the teacher cannot remember or does not know what it feels like to NOT get that concept. If the teacher did, they may get lest frustrated and be able to better explain the concept to those who don't. But they don't, and they can't. Those who don't have problems with social skills and such simply can't understand what it's like to NOT know when to stop teasing someone, or what different meanings a person can have with the same sentence based on tone. That makes it a lot harder to have those things taught to you. Sorry for the long comment, and I really don't want an argument, but I promise, the spectrum (for those of us actually on it) is NOT an excuse for behavior- being an asshole is being an asshole. It's a game about being heroes, and changing the world; defeating the big bad, about becoming legends. What do you mean we're bad for following this simple directive? Steven, you don't get it - it's not about you and your fantasies; it's about the players. You're the DM, your job is to let the players have fun, not to try and murder them and then get pissed on them surviving! If you cannot do that, then I'm sorry, you're a bad DM. But, again, I said none of that. I wanted peace. "Well", I said after he cooled down. "It's a real pity, your world had such potential, but I understand. Meanwhile, I can offer to continue with my adventure for all of you. Steven, you are absolutely welcome to come over, since you now have more time to play, I do love your dwarf, and since it seems like this is our main adventure now, I can offer you to switch from Adventure League's SKT to a real, big adventure!" Everyone supported the idea, even Steven, but in the end, he pouted, and huffed, and refused to come, probably offended that I was positive about the change and didn't argue about anything."

@Caleb Chaney-- i personally think it might be more than that. Just because you have an Evil alignment doesn't mean your an Evil person, just that you were raised with a different set of values. My Party(GREED-E) plays mostly chaotic alignments, but i've gotten them to be noble & do the right thing multiple times by applying to either their greed(be it monetary, political or Arcane) or their sense of self-preservation/Revenge(they ended the reign and life of an Evil Tyrant BBEG just 'cause one of their Lt. Cheeted them). The DM in Op's story went about it with a bulldog mentality to "get their way" and apparently tried to run 'em over with the Railroad. True, the party didn't make things any better by pulling all their stunts even when it was obvious the DM was honestly mad...

@@johnnysizemore5797 this is why random tables to roll on are so helpful. Tables for everything, roll tables for roll tables. sure, you want structure in the game so you can prepare. But a level of randomness alleviates frustration. You can't really get angry at people for ruining plans when your plans are random and NPC's can just as well ruin them as PC's. I also enjoy making "if ____ then ____" tables, if you make enough tables you can give your NPCs/worlds a semblance of AI so you aren't in full control of them. @@johnnysizemore5797 this gets into the primary issue of alignment that is *people often don't know what it means* In dnd, evil is not "society disagrees with you" it is not "you are just raised with different values" it is not "my book says what you are doing is bad" good and evil in dnd are cosmic realities with firm definitions that are measurable. Good and evil are not subjective in dnd, they are as real and tangible as gravity or the electromagnetic force. It is *important* when you get a new Dm to establish that you all know exactly what is to be expected when someone says "I'm chaotic evil"/"I'm lawful good" because they are not the real world equivalents and even if they were people don't agree on what the real world equivalents even mean. The refusal to choose reminds me of something I heard about improv comedy: The first rule of improv comedy is never say, “No.” The idea is one or more members of the improv group come up with something and the others take turns playing off it (A good example of this is the superhero segments on Whose Line Is It Anyway?). If someone comes up with something and someone says no, that kills the momentum of the skit by forcing one or more people to change track abruptly and unnecessarily. It sounds to me like refusing to make a decision/take any action in an RPG is like saying no during an improv skit.

That’s code word for: I’m a contrarian who likes to go against the flow of the game. There’s a reason why so many DMs on ROLL20 ban evil alignment characters because of that negative conflict. I had a player tell me that when I was making a group, and I had to boot him before the game even started because all he wanted to do was argue with people. And I feel like both sides could have helped with this. The DM could have given stakes (the king absolutely could send them home, but is willing to sacrifice the good of the party for the good of his people, and hold that over the party to get them to do what he wants. Later on, this could turn into a, "the king is our enemy" arc.) Or the party could have offered what incentivizes them ("I don't really care about your petty drama... but you're a wealthy monarch. I'll back you, for the right price.) OR out of character, anyone could have brought up that they're having a rough time. "I feel like you want me to pick a side, but my character doesn't really feel strongly about either one. I'm getting the vibe you're not happy with that... maybe we can talk about what our options are." "It's really important to the plot that you guys pick a side, but I'm a little lost on how to get that to happen without asking you to break character. (And by bad I mean anything that crosses the line morally, either by action or words) I can understand being neutral because then you can slip into evil tendencies if you want or good tendencies if you want but where's the fun in having an extended campaign played by all evil characters? I really hope I don't sound like a wimp or something but I really would like it if someone could give me a good answer because every time I hear one of these stories I get a little bored with some of the antics that the players talk about getting up to....... Sorry for the long comment. Got on a bit of a rant there. And I know it barely has anything to do with this story since they were just a MOSTLY evil group, not straight evil.
@BericD

Well, the first thing with any alignment based system and playing a Evil party campaign you'd have to discuss it: What is Evil? I mean, is stabbing and killing someone with a sword evil? Some would say yes. Others would say it depends. Was the person attacking you, were they a proven murderer, were they a demon? But that's a whole long philosophic discussion so let's not bother with that part. Basically playing a Evil party is a change of pace and allows for something different. Personally the thing that really confuses me (and in my opinion I think people are doing it completely wrong) is when people play a Evil party with the idea that Evil means selfish. I mean, let's say the Evil party was a group of cultists trying to raise great Cthulhu. Why would any of those cultists be selfish and constantly trying to backstab each other? They are all working on the same team for the same goal, sure they might be murderous when necessary, but they'd always be looking out for each other. Also another thing I think people always get wrong is that just because you're evil doesn't mean you're ok with murder or are a complete psychopath. People always think that evil means running around kicking dogs, eating babies, flaying people alive, etc. But is it? Let's say my character is a con artist who swindles old folks out of their entire life savings, depriving these people of everything right at the final years of their lives. That is without question evil. But also my character would never kill anyone, loves dogs, thinks babies are cute, and the thought of flaying anyone alive or dead would make them puke. But they are without question evil. That is where playing a evil campaign can be fun. You can be a group of brothers and sisters in a cult who deeply care about each other but are trying to summon forth your God who will end all the wickedness from the world and usher in a golden age that will make it a paradise. Well, a paradise according to your world view. And yeah other people think your God is evil but what do they know? Look at all the death, destruction, and senseless suffering in the world, and what are those heretic naysayers doing to stop that? Nothing that's what! You and your brothers and sisters are doing something, and once you complete that ritual the rest of the world will see. They'll all see the glory of Cthuhu and realize the true importance of all those team building exercises you and the other cultist always did. Never underestimate what can be accomplished with a positive attitude and trust in your co-workers. Or you play a campaign of con artists, bank robbers, mobsters, orc/goblin warband dealing with humans encroaching on their land, people surviving a zombie/any apocalypse by whatever moral means necessary, assassins and spies serving the kingdom doing the dirty espionage and assassination job necessary for the greater good, group of vampires just trying to keep their species going and yeah they do have to drink blood and there's only so many ways to do that. There are plenty of ideas for evil campaigns that would be just like any other game, only with some moral flexibility on how the job gets done.

I mean, I still feel like it would get stale (outside of the cultist thing which sounds A-MAZING.....thanks now I really want to play That campaign lol) if you spent the entire time being forced to go bad in a specific way. I'm not saying there isn't room for change in there, as seen by what some people think Good means (I'm talking about personal experience here) but I tend to play neutral characters so that when I do something horrible right after doing something good, people won't get confused. There was one campaign I was in where the sorceror (He was playing it SUPPOSEDLY Chaotic Good) kept trying to kill things for no reason. Literally. He would see something and be the first to attack it. The DM ended up warning him like three separate times about that and it would've been cool if the DM'd actually followed through and shown a little backlash about the characters change in alignment, but alas he didn't. I am aware that sorcerors don't get a massive backlash like clerics do when they shift but it still would've been cool if something had come of it, since he was playing the only Good character. (Our healer was an Oracle who ended up becoming Chaotic Good by the end of the campaign.) Ack, sorry. I ranted again. I mainly just wanted to thank you for giving me a proper response.

I mean, at that first off the rails point, the party was at a high enough level that fighting a small army wouldn't be unreasonable if they did it right and the army was low level enough, I can tell that even though he's DM'd before he's probably used to murder hobos and absolute dunce players who ram into any encounter and are happy when it's a challenge, but conquerable. He just didn't know how that group's roleplay style worked, and also didn't frame their new ally properly. Fuck man, instead of "the empire is evil" if he just framed the story as "the empire is the only thing in the way of YOU having an empire" then things might have turned out differently, wouldn't matter if they thought the little guy was shady. The DM so far is by no means the asshole of this story, but he just fundamentally set things up at 90 degrees to the party.

Well, given this supposedly takes place in an alternate dimension maybe the elves there aren't fey-ish? Or not fey-y enough for the plot elixir to work? Granted, given Steven's apparent deserve to have weird character motivations its possible there just isn't an actual explanation for why thats not a thing.
