I've been slowly going through your channel's content and I love all your thoughts and opinions on so many different films. While the Internet often seems like such an unholy, toxic environment, your sincerity and kindness and optimism is a much-needed breath of fresh air in our dark times. Thank you for all your efforts and please have a safe and happy new year:)

Thank you for taking the time to talk about this set, Daisuke. I think it is really cool you were able to add that box to your film collection. I would purchase it myself only if it included the (not-yet-made) Daisuke Criterion closet visit video. This is a great collection of Blu-rays in one box but I think it would have been really cool to have done an individual, spine numbered release that focused on Criterion as a physical media/film propagating company themselves. You are always so well mannered in your speech, my friend. I continue to be so admired by your ability to speak in such a balanced way that includes all of your wonderful thoughts. I wonder which are your favorite films included in this set?? At any rate, that is an admirable box and I am always glad to see more stuff like that getting created even if it's something I won't be purchasing myself. It was really cool to hear your thoughts on this today. Looking forward to all of your discussions as always, my friend! Take care!

Hey Daisuke, happy holidays to you and your family. I have the Bergman, Tati, Fellini but zero interest in the CC40. For collectors, I have many of those discs. For new entrants it’s a big early investment. You are so valued and loved.

Great review as always! Thank you! Not many reviews of this set are out there. Was disappointed they weren't in 4k. As much as I love collecting Criterions I just don't have the desire to purchase a $800 ($400 even when 1/2 price) box set of BluRay videos. Had they been 4k it would've offered upgrades to a lot of the films making it enticing to buy

My friend you don’t have to have the fanciest new cameras or editing to have an amazing channel like you do! Please know the channel is fantastic! I remember hearing in an older video, it’s the spaces between the words!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

I’m new to collecting criterion and this box set has been amazing. I had only seen two of the films but I liked the criterion closet videos and always wanted to pick up some of the films people were discussing.

I started collecting CC about a year ago, and I have 9 of these titles in this set. Here are a some reasons I decided to pass on this set: 1. It seems like it would be a chore to find the disc, or even to remember what movies are in there. With the individual discs, it’s much easier browse what you want to watch. This is especially true for this set, since it is so large and not focused. The director’s sets, to me, at least let you know what they contain by their nature. 2. Since they chose these discs to represent their output, the odds are that many of them will get a 4K release. One I’m interested in, especially since KZbinrs rave about the 4K release that one of these, The Red Shoes, has already had. It’s sad seeing that old Janus set on DVD. Too bad it would cost so much to rescan them and give them an updated release. 3. I don’t know how many of these films I’ll like enough to rewatch. For films I’m iffy on, I’ll wait until they get a rotation on the Criterion Channel. Sometimes, I just watch a few minutes just to see if I want to get it, if I’m interested. That way, I can see the film in full on the disc for the first time. I think I’ll pick up the Ingmar Bergman set in the next flash sale. I got the Fellini one last sale. I like the flash sales better than the Barnes and Noble sale, because CC gives you future credit if you buy directly from them. It’s fun, from time to time, to go through the collection on their website, to plan out what I want to get in the next sale. Apple has upped their game with the Notes app on the iPad, so you can make a checklist in their and include links, so when the sale hits, all you have to do is go to the links of those you’ve selected instead of searching for each one on their site. Thanks for your video! I like your tone and humility. Good luck!

Another point is that you can't really sell off the titles that you don't like or don't plan to rewatch because I doubt collectors would buy loose discs

I think it would have been really cool if these films were placed and presented within this set in chronological order of their release dates...so that we could get a little bit of a "Cineam unfolding over time" type of progression through the set.

What brand are your frames?

It's an interesting idea but not sure what the target market is. It's too expensive for people who are new to the criterion collection and people who have been collecting it for a while aren't going to want to pay that much for a bunch of movies they already have. I guess it'd make a good gift for someone who is trying to watch more movies but doesn't own a lot yet.

Despite my affinity for the Criterion Collection, I despise packaging that has my discs touching cardboard. It seems all their larger box sets are packaged this way. This takes nothing away from the films or their bonus material but it’s something I find disturbing. I have many amazing Severin box sets with similar packaging and I’m hesitant to play them because I don’t want to scratch the discs by removing them.

Is this set region locked?

Yes, I was wondering that as well.

I’m back again having watched your whole video. I sense your disappointment. Ultimately this is a missed opportunity. I recently watched a brilliant documentary on Powell and Presberger by Martin Scorsese, how wonderful it would’ve been if criterion commissioned a famous director like Scorsese to make a documentary about the 40 years of criterion this is a disc we would all snapped up

Not worth it in my opinion, would be overkill and an issue of serious double dipping too. Kudos to you for being honest in your review even though you've spend a bit of money on this set.
