Thank you so much for taking the time to film this discussion of the film Scarface, Daisuke! I watched my copy of the Criterion 4K for the first time several days ago and was so blown away that I almost messaged you my excitement. I've been thinking about it quite a bit every day. This was my first time seeing this film. I was destined to see this ever since watching a special feature on my Brian De Palma Scarface DVD where Brian De Palma, Al Pacino, Oliver Stone and others discuss adapting the new Scarface from the original. I watched that special feature at a very young age and have always had the desire to see the original. It's been a great failure of mine not having watched this 1932 Scarface when I claim to be such a fan of the Brian De Palma version but it felt so good to finally see this classic all these years later courtesy of the Criterion Collection. So many scenes to list, but this gangster masterpiece has everything my gangster loving self loves. Tommy Guns, classic cars, glamorous black & white style, gangster suits (a new shirt for every day!), a coin-flipping gangster, gangster groupies, booze, decadent parties... This film really blew my expectations away. Tony Camonte was/is a character for the ages. A timeless character brought to life by the "Yiddish school of acting" master Paul Muni.. It was so fun watching this man play this character and see his interactions with the supporting cast. I loved how much his mother reminded me of the mom in the Brian De Palma version and Poppi reminded me quite a bit of Michelle Pfeiffer. This film has definitely enhanced my opinion of the Brian De Palma version and it will be so much fun playing with both versions in my mind now. I just knew from the very opening scene of that janitor cleaning up after the gangster party with that stray bra and the cinematography of it all that I was in for a true classic. I've watched this film twice already and anticipate watching it many more times going forward. I thought about you while watching this movie because Tony does a very similar "hat-tipping" mannerism that I notice you do, Daisuke. I love everything about this film but I really loved the part where the restaurant is getting shot up but Tony is excited by the Tommy Guns. Gosh, I could gush about this film for forever now that I'm thinking about it again.. I just have to thank you again for building the excitement that came along with this film's Criterion release announcement that led to my eventual first-time viewing. No doubt this film is in the running to be in my "top first-time viewing experience" list for 2024 and I could see it taking top honors. The only thing this film was missing was pelicans and pineapple. This film reminded me of another film I saw for the first time recently called The Roaring Twenties in a great way. May Criterion or other labels lead me towards awesome gangster experiences like this again soon! Cheers, my friend! P.S. Did you put the film "X" behind you to reference Scarface?
