I had no idea Mike Leigh had a new film out. I saw these two and thought Criterion must be releasing Secrets and Lies. Then I quickly remembered I've got the Secrets and Lies Criterion (One of the greatest films of all time, btw). Then I googled and holy shit, they're back together for a new film! I am suddenly extremely hyped.

I binged, so to speak, on Mike Leigh films this year. Great to see him here. I recall hearing him on BBC radio 4 talking about Julies et Jim. I had a tape cassette recording of it. I also watched three Cassavetes films this year, coincidentally. I wish Ken Loach and Mike Leigh would avoid using digital colour grading - the soft, homogeneous desaturated colour palette etc, it's aesthetically unsuitable, in my opinion.

I know that usually people are in the closet on their own, so it would be weird not to "present" to the camera. But having the two of them just talk to each other rather than "us" was a refreshing change. It was also nice that they clearly hadn't planned a list to prove their bonafides - they were just finding things, taking them, and possibly saying, "Oh, that one's good."

I wrote my undergraduate thesis on some of Leigh's work. He's the filmmaker who has had the biggest influence on me. I had the chance to meet him when he was doing some press work for "Peterloo" in Dublin, but unfortunately I got the date wrong. One of my biggest regrets.
