Two stories: 1) Found a body in about 30 ft. of water in a lake. Student pilot hit power line in a Ce150. The only thing wrong with him was, he had a small delta-shaped dent in his forehead. I'm sure if he was conscience he could have saved himself. I hope in a crash I would remember to yell, "Protect your head!" 2) Pilot in a float Beaver caught a wingtip on takeoff. All seven people got out, amazingly no fatalities. Pax credited a great safety brief, including the pilot taking time to show how the doors worked and getting the nearest pax to actually operate the door handle. I have surely added that one!

The seatbelt airbags are amazing and such a cheap retrofit for what they bring to the table. The way the lapbelt inflates to literally fill up the entire passenger cabin forward of the passengers. Much better than the alternative of an encounter with the instrument panel.
@azcountry60642 жыл бұрын
Where did you get them? Is that something that is easily retrofitted? Or, does it need to be professionally installed.
@RonPiggott5 жыл бұрын
When I see them talking about possible safety equipment as a passenger what would help me is a laminated list of safety equipment. A picture on the left side and the 6 - 8 steps for how to use it. Also having 3 - 4 copies of this on board spread throughout the plane so in the event of an accident one may be at head and used.

ALWAYS do a passenger briefing, even if the passenger is a pilot. It shows that you are paying attention to the well-being of your passengers and that you have high standards for yourself as PIC.

7:20 There is one item that, as a non-smoker, I would never have thought to include. A carton of cigarettes. After a forced landing the last thing you want to have to deal with is a smoker who is going through a stressful event who has nothing to smoke. Just make sure they understand about the possibility of spilled fuel in the area.

Brilliant thought. Another thing I've noticed in a lot of these types of cross country accidents.. is people being stranded in freezing conditions and they're wearing shorts and flip flops???? jeez!

@brennakoeppen76297 жыл бұрын
E_m_m_o Yeah, I've always loved the Cirrus I fly for that. It's extremely reassuring for a student pilot like myself to know that not only do they have a professional sitting beside them, if they're solo or the situation is THAT bad, they've got a parachute right there. Sad how the Cirrus got (and still gets sometimes) so much hate for the CAPS. If your plane has a BRS, I know you're on my side on this one :)

Good video. However just can't see passenger remembering much about turning on the panel radio. I can understand the importance but might be information overload. Maybe better to have it on the written passenger safety briefing with some illustration and just say to refer to that.

100%. Even in the middle of summer I don't allow any passenger to get in the plane with open toe shoes. I also try and make sure they have a long sleeve shirt or light jacket, at least. If they didn't bring it, I have an extra in my flight bag. I ride a motorcycle and I've been stranded before, without proper gear/attire. I learned my lesson.

just dreaming about becoming a pilot and this is just adding things to my to-do list. especially that I want to fly with my girlfriend, I will give her a couple of lessons in flying just in case there is an emergency, make sure we have all the safety gear and stuff I mean, having a handbook with all the necessary information, how to use the radio, how to find help, and also a quick guide on flight instruments is critical in my opinion. maybe even the most critical information like stall speed and just how to keep the plane in the air just taped to the panel and blankets, food, survival kit is also a good idea..
@rickkimball61254 жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion, but I would take your girlfriend (or anyone who may fly alot with you) out to the plane one day and go over everything. Don't fly, just have her do the walk around with you, sit in the cockpit and review how the flight controls work, how the radios work, how to trigger the ELT, where the fire extinguisher is, etc. My CFI did this the second lesson I had with him...he made me see/touch/explain all of the key components of the plane, particularly the safety equipment. It was invaluable.

been told that kicking at the doors/windows isn't a good idea because injury can occur in various ways. Use the fire extinguisher first to break windows open and if that doesn't work then start kicking
@hempelcx3 жыл бұрын
Reasonable argument. On the other hand, many passengers may not have the upper body strength/mobility to swing a fire extinguisher inside a cramped/crashed cockpit. I keep a spring loaded window punch in the passenger door pocket.

I always reserve to Exit door seat and get briefed. so I asked the question: out on the wing calling out so people could follow my voice, what do I have to HOLD ONTO?? (the flight crew said" "No one ever asked us that question before". I thought a handhold off the fuselage would be a good idea. esp. if I'm in the water or the wing is tipped!! be prepared, Boy Scouts.

If you are going over water you should always have an inflatable life raft & also a flare gun generally... whistle or horn also good way of alerting people where you are- I assume everyone has ferro rod & striker & knows how to light a fire & set simple traps for fish & small game... don't forget the REAL paracord not the fake type... there should be at least the bare min of survival tools for processing wood & building shelters. @rickkimball61254 жыл бұрын
@@Direwolf56 Exactly. Or better yet, how will they react in turbulence? IMC? I try to do some briefing before we get out to the plane...and if they are iffy, i try to talk them out of getting in the plane. I don't need a panicky/screaming passenger.

Then don't fly GA. On a commercial flight, there are a lot of personnel trained in emergency procedures on hand to help you. In a GA plane in an emergency, you may be required to help yourself, since the pilot may be incapacitated.
