They really thought Nott was stupid and naive and being manipulated by Caleb in the early episodes even though she had the highest intelligence of all them outside of Caleb. This one moment changed EVERYTHING about the party’s view of Nott and Caleb.

The main thing I loved was that they all though she was being manipulated. At the same time we the viewers and the players knew Caleb never really asked Nott to get him much up to that point. Everything Nott did for him was of her choosing. Watching the players faces through the Nott/Caleb interactions was almost as fun as the interactions.

@@wenbluepirate3954 Think about all the red flags shown at the time (from the perspective of everyone else other than Caleb and Nott); Here, you have an insecure woman who’s negative about herself and her race, wants to be “changed” as a result, is an alcoholic, and is only confident in Caleb’s abilities, not her own. Caleb, while nowhere near as bad, is still a shady person who’s part of the group for money, clearly has some personal baggage, and would rather distance himself from others than socialize. Also, the earlier part of this conversation was when Caleb tried to steal a scroll even though they were meant to “leave no trace.” Outside of the logistics of “we’ve already ruined the rug, we shouldn’t ruin the house,” the incident was more-or-less showing that Caleb and Nott put more trust into each other rather than the rest of the Mighty Nein, as neither of them told the others that they’re gonna do this. This in turn could’ve put a bigger target on the Nein, going back to what Beau and Molly were saying about having enough awareness to not trouble everyone else in the group. This also caused Fjord to speak-out further about Nott’s insecurities, as he and Molly were told by Nott (through Charming her), that she heavily relied on only Caleb to protect her and “change” her. Because of how vague she was about it, it led Fjord (not so much as Molly since he said that he didn’t really care so much about other people’s business) to be somewhat convinced that Caleb had somehow forced her to have complete trust in Caleb and no one else, as well as holding over her head the possibility that he could give her something that she wants. Think of the latter parts of manipulation. Something you want is dangled in front of you, the manipulator requests something of you that you’re openly uncomfortable with, burden you with their emotional baggage, and make you their mindless slave essentially. Fjord was probably slowly opening the gates to Nott that she could trust people other than Caleb, and probably implement seeds of the thought that Caleb may not be as great as she’s led-on to believe. So when Nott opens-up about their chemistry together, it really does change things for most of the group. Now the only thing they can work on is making sure that they need to work with the group. Out of character, I’m pretty sure the cast knew that it wasn’t a case of domestic abuse. Some of them may have had or known someone else go/going through that and Matt probably made it very clear before that he wouldn’t allow it unless everyone else was comfortable with. At the very least, they probably talked in-between sessions to make sure that it wasn’t the case and tried hard not to metagame as a result (could explain the more mundane reactions to Nott’s reveal).

Yeah it kind of crashed into a brick wall after the "your people" incident. Basically stopped altogether(actually really understandable with Caleb obviously feeling that their views of each other had changed at least a bit, and the impending meet up with her family,) and her getting in touch with her husband and child, while completely denying, and acting as if this conversation never really happened cemented the death of this way of looking at their relationship. Similar actions later were fewer and just kind of felt out of place.

I always assumed Nott thinks of him as a child she must protect and go along things he does, and Caleb things of her as a younger sister he must protect and go along things she does, so it evens out and they act more like equal siblings because of it. Basically they both have a different understaning of their relationship. Though neither of them really tries to use authority on the other. Nott understands Caleb has his own issues when it comes to parental figures and doesn't want to impose, ignoring her parental instincts, and Caleb understands Nott is a functional adult, so while she may make bad or wrong decisions, he can try to help her get out of them, but not lecture her on stealing or drinking
