That "pointing hand" is a form of 'asking hand" in some Southern Chinese boxing styles. The extended finger is for either pressing points or for stabbing into cavities, since it is assumed that the person using it has taken the time to properly strengthen their fingers.

Many people in the past used to teach Karate and Jiujitsu together. That makes a lot of sense, especially if you want good applications for the kata.
@ThatBunkaiBlokeShawnDonaldson6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for contributing Mr. K. This is true when we look at post war Karate. However, if we're talking about pre-1900 Karate, Jiu Jitsu and Karate were their own unique disciplines, but with many similarities.

this is exactly the application from Hean Sandan as I was taught by Enoeda sensei in the 1980's. Great to see again!

Is there a particular kata you're interested in?

Thank you for posting the video. Do you have a Bunaki for the final sequence? (The left punch turn around, etc.)
@ThatBunkaiBlokeShawnDonaldson2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian. I've just done a seminar for Heian Nidan and will put together the video for that shortly. Heian Sandan will be next after that, in a few months time. In the meantime, here's one I like to borrow from American Kenpo for that sequence; kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZ6aeJyfl6Z7nc0

Oss. I like the idea of preventing the spin with a nukite. Never thought about that application. Maybe dangerous because an opponent can throw in an arm bar... Anyway nice bunkai ideas! Keep up the good work!

I like the waki/kanuki gatame and reverse guilliotine ideas ... but ... I don't like the spin. I guess here a mere hint bunkai is misunderstood for decades. Try the elbow position against two-on-one arm drags. " Real arm drags" with wrist and ellbow grip, as the morote uke in heian sandan suggests. It's a very effective reactive frame against arm drags and back takes - they hate me in no gi sub for it, but it´s okay in MMA clinch sparring. And the spin in a clinch ... when do you prefer to do it - when the opponent has control over your arm or when you have (touch) control over his arm ?? And catching punches to apply sankyo... hm. Unsu, to answer your question.

Thank you for the suggestion Kenkokan. I'll definitely have a play with that in the dojo!

Could you do bunkai for all the Heian katas?
@ThatBunkaiBlokeShawnDonaldson2 жыл бұрын
Hi TOM Bob-san, Certainly, this is part of the plan. Right now I'm releasing Bassai Dai and some of the other black belt kata are next including Kanku-dai and Empi. So it might be a little while till I get to it. If there's a few movements from any of the Heian kata that you'd like me to cover, let me know and I'd be happy to cover them.

I am not convinced with the Nukite part. It is supposed to be a spear strike. Please reverse engineer to find the true essence
@ThatBunkaiBlokeShawnDonaldson2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shan-san, according to whom should it be a spear strike? That's a very closed-minded way of looking at it. I recommend you apply the 'Duck Test' to it. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and swims like a duck... then it's a duck!. Same goes, if it looks like the kata, addresses a Habitual Act of Phyiscal Violence and works under aggressive resistance... it's correct.

Critical thinking is not disrespectful It would be disrespectful to oneself not to apply it Too bad if those teaching bs did not apply it in their journey
@ThatBunkaiBlokeShawnDonaldson3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I must admit, there was once a time I didn't apply it either. I guess we all 'awake' at different times in our journey, hey?
