What infuriates me about the stuff we've had this year is that in about half of them, the writers _weren't_ just writing bad fanfic. They had some deep-vault lore at their disposal, and they face-rolled over the setting anyway. In the Halo series, for instance, I remember two things from the show that pissed off the fanbase. The use of Hunters as separate worms, for instance, _is_ kind of supported by the lore: in one of the novels, we see Hunters separated out from their hulking, armored warrior forms into their component worms. The Covenant was using them to work their way into inaccessible bits of Forerunner tech to clean them out. That had to be taught, too: originally, the Covenant wanted to eradicate them as vermin, since the Hunters preferred eating the Forerunner tech itself. Convincing them to serve as miniature walking tanks and not eat Forerunner tech is a big point in Covenant history: one of the Arbiters was described as being responsible for "the taming of the Hunters" in the opening of Halo 2. So, a boatload of the worms infiltrated into a ship's systems, chewing through vital components, would understandably ruin a ship in short order. Injecting them into an enemy ship as part of a boarding action makes some sense, and disassembling themselves into independent worms is a thing Hunters can do. But the individual worms themselves are quite weak. Pistol shots and rifle buttstrokes to unprotected worms from a normal human are enough to take down Hunters if you hit them in un-armored spots in the games. Despite this, a few dozen worms are somehow enough to overwhelm the entire armed, alerted Navy crew and Marine contingent of a UNSC warship in open battle? Bullshit. Dr. Halsey is another example. In the games, she's standoffish and possessive of "her" SPARTAN-II's, to the point that she hates the existence of SPARTAN 3's and 4's, but at the end of the day, it's no big deal: no one knows more about the SPARTAN project than she does, and it's a war for mankind's survival, so anything goes, right? In the show, she's a frigid misanthropic control freak, the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) she works for is a sinister spy agency, and the child abductions they're complicit in are the least of their crimes. In supplementary materials, the show's characterization of Halsey and ONI is... Pretty thoroughly supported. One of the preorder bonuses of Halo: Reach (back in an era when that meant something) was Halsey's personal diary, in a physical book format. In one entry, she reflects on having kidnapped over a hundred kindergarteners for the SPARTAN-II project, and the fates of the doomed flash-grown clone body doubles these children were replaced with. In-universe, flash-cloning is fine for replacing organs and such, but doing a whole person is too tall an order for the tech to handle. Such a clone will invariably die of sudden, aggressive, incurable cancers within a few years. Halsey's response to seeing the ONI surveillance reports on the nearly 200 families she'd just destroyed as they saw their healthy, brilliant children suddenly and inexplicably wither and die was to be shocked at these icky "feelings" she was experiencing, and to stop reading the reports. But taking that to mean that the UNSC as a whole is ultimately no better morally than the openly genocidal Covenant? Go home, Paramount, you're drunk. In broad strokes, these things _are_ supported by the lore, and demonstrate that the writers did some deep dives to find them. A single book, a throwaway line in one game, and a preorder bonus: these details were not easy to find. They frakking _knew_ these things, but then turned around and bunged them into the show in the worst possible way anyway. That is, IMO, the most infuriating part of 2022.

I ate up the lore. Hands down Eric Nylund is my favorite author for science fiction for canon. And I read a lot of SW books when I was a teenager. I rp and tie the Halo lore with Red vs Blue and rp Spartan II. I always rp Halsey and her Spartan’s with the respect and reverence that is shown in Nylund’s books. Especially with the lore that many forget that she’s actually extremely neutral if it helps her Spartan’s and humanity. I never watched Halo because at first glance, I knew it was going to be bad. Especially since I saw all the red flags when it came to how they treated Halsey and her Spartan’s in 343 how this show was heading already. This was before I even saw defense of Chief removing his helmet. That was a larger red flag. The first thing I heard from the show was Chief fucking a Convenant spy. I think I broke my phone with the amount of rage I said to my friend when I told her that. This was before EFAP; this was before Halsey, the Mac Canon, Covenant, the teenage girl hero, and the “happy pill” (I know what it is, but it pisses me off too much to say the actual name). Every fucking scene, just listening to EFAP, fucking pissed me off so much, had so many issues, and was so far off canon and made no sense in any way possible that I could not be pissed off. I had to pause every scene and take a few minutes to calm down because I was that pissed. I stopped texting my friend halfway through because she was so furious she started to swear and rant, which she never does. I have seen worse adaptations; I have seen things that destroy my childhood more... I have never been so pissed off at a series so much that every scene fucking pissed me off so much I had to rant about it.
@coltonwhite25182 жыл бұрын
The halo show legitimately hurts my soul. Like most others I knew it was gonna be bad, but when I got to the part where the rabid insurgent girl is threatening to blame her people's massacre on the UNSC instead of the galactic doomsday cult of Aliens whose only goal is the eradication of humanity I was actually pissed off. Halo has it's moral grey moments, but at no point is the UNSC implicated to be just as bad as the Covenant because it objectively isn't. Not to mention the retarded insurgent girl's plan completely falls apart with just the bare minimum of thought but Miranda Keyes(who they race swapped by the way because of course they did...) acts like the girls got them cornered? The real Master Chief would've snapped that chicks neck like a chicken bone the absolute moment he perceived her as a threat to humanity let alone if it was a direct order. But the part that truly made me check out was seeing a high ranking *human* within the Covenant's hierarchy. The whole Goddamn point of the war is that the mere existence of humans threatens the Prophet's power and challenges their belief that they were chosen by the forerunners, the center of their religion. The Prophet's would never under any circumstances allow a human among their ranks, not even a willing defector. It completely defeats the entire purpose of the Covenant's great journey, which is the pinnacle of their goals and agendas.

Elvis was absolutely atrocious. First movie that I ever walked out of, it was THAT bad. 90% of what I saw, consisted of Elvis' manager (who was, by all accounts, a complete asshole) glorifying himself. I'm speaking as the granddaughter of what's probably the biggest Elvis fan on God's green Earth, by the way.

Just watched the first three episodes of Andor. Wow, very impressive production and immersive story telling. It's best not to think too much about the fact this is a star wars story, especially as it relates to the sequels. The point is, its made by true professionals who care about their craft. It would be interesting if Gilroy and Filoni could come together and discuss ideas.

Muh boi, Drinky, nailing it at 12:08. I mean, you guys are so right: it's hard to remember all the INSANE amounts of shitty films and television shows in 2022, and harder yet to keep track of those few, gleaming "diamonds in the rough", as it were, but............as soon as you pointed out "Everything Everywhere All At Once", Will?.......shoot, it took me FOREVER to get around to watching that, but it really deserved all the accolades I can recall it getting from not only yourself but many others as well -what a simple, joyful, and very artistically realized delight. I'm glad that in the shitstorm of (generously called) "media" that was 2022, you did not fail to recall that good, joyful, and creative project to our minds 👍. I also appreciated you guys touching on "Bullet Train (2022)". I just watched that, for New Years Eve, with family and was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was gonna be shit, but it ended up being a really fun, silly time, directed by a former STUNT COORDINATOR, of all people (which says something awesome about it), and which felt like a direct HOMAGE to the director Guy Ritchie that I love so very much. Was it perfect? NAH, there were plenty of plot points, character choices, etc that I could pick apart if I really wanted, but.........I didn't feel the need to! It was so beautiful and fun in the (typical Guy Ritchie fashion) stylized, lots of comical/meaningful/playful call-backs to previous character moments/lines, great fight choreography befitting old-school cinema, etc.........that how could one NOT love it? It was loveable, heartfelt 'gangsta' comedy-in-dark-situations' fun-times that how could anyone NOT give it an easy pass? Here's to you and yours, gents. You're never perfect, your takes aren't always perfect, I'm not perfect, none of us is ultimately perfectly objective.........but you bring a lot of wonderful and useful critical analysis, call out bullshit as bullshit (even if I may not always agree ONE HUNDRED percent), and I appreciate y'all 🙏. Stay up and stay well, and please continue to stay open-minded, as is the only both rationally and spiritually healthy approach for any one of us dirty lil humans, lol😉.

@@clogs4956 personally i like Gwendolyn Christie as Lucifer way better than Tom Ellis. Merging Johanna and John Constantine so the characters can be played byvone person makes sense when adapting source material. Girls who played Death and Rose Walker were rather good IMO. Lady who played Lucienne was a bit on the wooden side. Desire as a genderless character is straight from comics. As I've said rewriting Brute and Glob arc stung. I can but guess why they did that. The series was cast colour blind but doesn't feel like fulfilling quotas and you may be surprised how much of gay and transsexual themes Gaiman placed in his works 30 years ago.
