Love when Bryan does Opeth reactions! Opeth has so many different sounds for you to explore! How about an Opeth themed week? One song from the 1st seven albums? That will give you a better understanding of how amazing this band really is!

That would be an interesting concept -- both for Opeth but also any band with a large discography and sonic evolution.

This song is amazing, one of my personal favourites too. It is a tribute to Mikael's grandfather 💜

Early Opeth is my favourite era of theirs. Absolutely adore those harmonized melodic riffs with Akerfeldt growling like a beast over them. It has a special atmosphere and mood to it, that I dont think any band has come to close to replicate, not even Opeth themselves after Morningrise.

that single chord progression is one of the best sections that Mikael ever written.. this is what makes Opeth so unique. “simplicity with perfectionist surroundings”. He is my fav song composer and still I am learning and knowing more about him. Especially with the last album they just released. Such a legend. Imagine writing this Morningrise album when you were a young adult. Speechless. Thank you for the analysis!!

That bass tone you hear is Johan Defarfalla playing fretless bass as he did on those first 2 albums. He plays lots of leads and solos on others songs, but not so much on this one. Morningrise is completely worth a full album listen.

Great reaction, Bryan. I haven’t listened to this album in a minute, you’ve just inspire to give it another spin. Most people say Black rose Immortal is the best track but I’ve always thought this was the best from the album.

Orchid and Morningrise are untouchable. So different and uniquely crafted pieces of music. Later albums are more reined in and polished, which I get that people like but not an issue for me. I was almost exclusively listening to black metal at the time the albums came out so the production was not an issue either. I still don’t know what’s wrong with the production. It’s hardly demo cassette quality.. Listening to Morningrise on a high quality stereo system kicks ass.

Interesting that you mention the goth feel, because I had almost forgotten how old katatonia opeth were at this time. Not that they were copying Katatonia, but they clearly came out of the gate with the same skillset and influences, even if opeth went on to a more decidedly 70s inspiration. But yeah, overall, this fits a lot more snuggly with the 90s doom death scene than with the prog they were later famous for. The guitar work you listen to here was very prevalent throughout the 90s, and early Anathema were also quite adept at just weaving two morose guitar leads in counterpoint and letting them flow more or less freely. Their first 2 albums and EP are filled with lovely moments where guitars just flow and play off each others leads.

I'm with you on this one, Bryan. 👍 This is also my favorite Opeth song; hell, I could even make an argument for the entire 'Morningrise' album being my favorite Opeth album of them all. Contrary to popular opinion, I actually prefer the first two Opeth albums; they never quite revisited that sound again; such a shame.. 🤔

Wow, I always enjoy your reviews and opinions, but I think this might be the first time that you really liked one of my all time favorites. I like most Opeth, but I tend to find their later more popular stuff doesn't match the quality of their earlier albums like on this track.

Very surprising to me that this is your favorite Opeth track so far. I could probably name about 70 Opeth tracks that I'd take over it, some of which you've already reacted to. It's a good song, I really like the first half of it, but I find the transition to the second half a bit rough and the second half just doesn't grab me as much.

I love how you picked up right away on the counterpoint. Their first two albums were heavy on counterpoint until they went into a more chord based approach from their third album and on. I really enjoy this album and though it’s not often held in high esteem by critics, I think it has its own atmosphere and vibe. Love this track along with others, but this track specifically is rarely mentioned. Great insights in your review, I agree with the drumming which imo is probably the weakest aspect of this album and track compared to their future drummers, but he also has his moments. The bassist is actually quite good and unique but doesn’t show much in this track specifically. maybe some time in the future I would love to hear your thoughts on songs off their new album, cheers.

The first two albums, drummer wise is simple and serve the songs as needed, they were super young and not heaps of intricate playing, basically just grooving along, there is heavier faster stuff, but again very simple, lopez starts next album, which is far more nuanced with the music, and Akerfeldt stepped right up and started the evolution to watershed - 1998 - 2008, best 7 album run in the history of metal music ❤

Such an unexpected choice for favourite. Morningrise and Orchid are my least favourite. I think that has got to do with the production. A lot of people will shout at me now: "What are you talking about?" Well, sorry to them. To all Opeth fans (old stuff and new(er) stuff) Have a nice day.

I've heard stuff with abysmal production that I hold dear to my heart so it doesn't bother me here, but it is a fact that later albums had such stellar production it kinda left their first two, maybe three albums eating dust, so I totally see what you mean.
