One of my favorite albums! Canadian punk legends. I'm glad to see you react to it!

I'm typically not super into skate punk, prog metal, or melodic thrash, yet Propagandhi has managed to consistently stay my favorite band. So excited you got to this one!

Some context about the angular shifts in the music here. In the 2000s, Skate Punk and Melodic Hardcore Punk bands were in an unspoken race to create more complex songs. The music became shifty and unstable and sounded “broken” yet melodic. Heavily influenced by Thrash, early Death, and Power Metal. Bands like Propagandhi, A Wilhelm Scream, Bigwig, Pour Habit, Forus, Sunsgrind, Belvedere, Mute, and above all, Strung Out, pushed the envelope quite far whilst still maintaining their Punk roots. Although bands like these helped broaden and elevate the genre, compared to the innovations in Extreme Metal, it can seem unimpressive.

one of the only 90s punk bands that actually stood for anything, this is their best album next to Less Talk, More Rock

One of the best introductions to Propagandhi. Absolute legends in the punk scene.

It's been very fun for me to see an outside musical perspective on so many artists that have been so important to me both musically and lyrically. I am a huge Between the Buried and Me fan as as well and watching your approach to both bands, while not only extremely informative and interesting from a theoretical standpoint, have been very revealing philosophically. I enjoy the reminder that human perspective on the ideas and enjoyment of lyrical and musical concepts can be so personal. Listening to songs about the depraved and depressing nature of humanity isn't for everyone I suppose.

I used to seek out depressing media in my teenage and early 20s years. I liked emotionally heavy music and films and novels. But somewhere in my late 20s and early 30s I stopped enjoying it. I can still find it impactful, like with this album, but life is often heavy and depressing enough for me to not want even more of that emotion packed into my mind. I understand that some people might be in a similar situation but find relief or might feel "seen" by depressing media but I don't fall into that category. It overwhelms me and I'm prone to shutting down emotionally when overloaded. It's not a fun time.

Fun Fact: life long propagandhi fan from like 7th grade. I'm 40+ years old now and could type a book about this band... Anyway, I agree that musically tertium non datur is my favorite on this album and one of my favorite for propagandhi. This album was recorded while Beaver was on guitar and he actually brought those insane rifts for Tertium non Datur, to propagandhi, from his band Giant Sons. The track is "Repairing The Damaged Beard" if you want to check out the proto-version of the music on tertium non datur for your own leisure. sidenote: if you do more black metal. Afsky.

Yes! Dude, yes! Favorite album. Stoked to see your reaction and analysis of this. And the look on your face when you realize the 15 epic is a silly cover song

About Without Love, I think you're probably right that it's a matter of punk's stylistic palette being what it is rather than the band consciously intending the song to sound upbeat. With a punk perspective and as someone with much less theoretical and practical knowledge about music I personally don't feel any clash between the song's music and the lyrical content, and I'd even say it sounds a bit somber to me (although of course it's hard to say how much of that is the lyrics influencing how I perceive the music)

"Come to the Sabbat" is a cover of the song of the same name by Black Widow.

To me, The Last Will & Testament and Without Love are both accepting the nihilism of existence as fact, but resisting it through love and through engagement in efforts against injustice. It's not rational, and yet.... I call it "hope without optimism"

"Hope without optimism" perfectly captures those songs. I think I'll be borrowing that phrase of yours in the future.

About Last Will and Testament as an album end. Most of the album sets up fighting against injstustuce is impossible. That kind of complacency is what supports the caste. Last Will and Testament makes sense to me as a send-off to the album. The caste will not fall if we continue to support it. It might be our Last Will and Testament, but we are taking up the fight.

I like the music, but not too keen on the vocals though. They seem a bit cliche considering how experimental/progressive the music is. Blink182 vocals on Botch music, but having said that I think Botch's vocals are their weak point too.
@CriticalReactions6 күн бұрын
I can see that. To me it's what keeps the music grounded against the more experimental sounds, acting as a familiar sound for people who aren't typically into more progressive music. On the other hand though, I couldn't really see this working with any other kind of vocals given how present the punk sound is in most of it.
