@CriticalRocket
@CriticalRocket 7 жыл бұрын
They have a very strict code of conduct on the battlefield and at first they fight using their methods only, which given their technical superiority works for them quite well. But as time goes on and the Inner Sphere start using their own honour system against them, the clans begin to issue less challenges to the inner sphere defenders. Ultimately though the very system of bargaining and haggling over victory conditions is used against them to end the invasion.
@codyraugh6599
@codyraugh6599 6 жыл бұрын
The clans developed in a harsh climate with limited resources. So they are used to the idea of limiting losses through betting on honor duels by elites. The Inner Sphere has no reason to act in such a manner. And without a technological edge, the Inner sphere's only early advantage was numbers and the existence of tactics that heavily punished Clan style warfare. By "the dark age" the clans had learned their lessons. But the technology gap has been mostly closed leaving the clans more or less with just better soldiers that they need to ensure are better equipped than the hoards they face now. The Clans still favor wagering their forces and short conflicts where a quick alpha strike will allow them to win, but the field tactics have changed.
@kinggoten
@kinggoten 6 жыл бұрын
@@codyraugh6599 very true, but the idea of having less losses by attacking an enemy that outnumbers you by such an insane amount by using as little resources as possible is kind of an insane way to go about reducing losses if they attacked together with overwhelming force it would of made them basicly take no losses in many major battles, or in some cases avoid being defeated in said battles. With that said I love how it was handled, it is a great way to bring a superior faction into a setting and allow them to be superior in every way but gimp them severly to allow the "good guys" to win, without some ex-machina or magic etc...(stuff Star Trek and the like do all the time)
@Meodread
@Meodread 5 жыл бұрын
@@kinggoten It's more a long term thinking and expectation that the enemy would behave in a clan like manner, they didn't. The Clan for example did not understand that civilians would fight them (as Clan civs wouldn't) and most of the clans refused to evolve that thinking. The Jaguars and Falcons for example punished warriors (Brandon Howell and Aidan Pryde) for winning by unclan means, ie adapting to the enemy. It goes to show the power of 100 of years of success doing something and the inability to shrug it off. The Wolves adapted, the Bears slightly and the Falcons same (they basically suspended the dueling rules of combat but they otherwise fought like Clanners).

Damn - solid work. Very cool, sir. ^_^ One small recommendation for you for future videos like this, when it comes to trying to keep track of so many different battle-forces involved: You could possibly make use of the side-bar areas for possibly listing the units that are actively involved in the conflict you're actively describing (Specific Clan forces on the left, Involved Com Guard units on the right, for instance), and then changing them to red in color when the unit is either destroyed or withdrawn during your description of the event, and adding units to the list when they enter the battle. Just a thought, and kind of a rough one, at that.

i posted this on blackpants video on Tukayyid but i think it bears repeating. Tukayyid reminds me a lot of the Citadel Offencive in 1943. The Red Army arrange a defence in depth along an obvious threat to the german front line on the eastern front (analigus to Comstar issuing a challange). They proceed to fortify it with dug in anti-tank guns, minefields, barbed wire, trenches, presighted artillery, and nearly two million incredibly pissed russians. On top of this the Stavka not only know where the attack is going to take place, but what units were going to be involved, and to the minute of when the offensive was going to start. When Army Group South and Army Group Center launch their attacks they are stonewalled by forces they thought inferior. Even as the cream of the crop is being put through a meat grinder division, and corp level commanders kept saying "victory is near". When in reality they had barely made any headway.

got a question: now that i started reading the novels again, i wonder if you maybe want to do something like BattleTech Legends, giving a short overview over famous people in the BT series, for example, Jaime Wolf, Natasha Kerensky, Aidan Prde, Kai Allard-Liao and so on? granted some of those would be veeery long, reference Natasha Kerensky, but i think it'd be actually cool to see a bit about those people. or, maybe less time consuming, the people behind some of the machines in MW:O, like Yen-lo-wang, Legendkiller, the Black Widow / Widowmaker 'mechs. just a thought ;)

It's certainly a topic I will cover one day. Natasha and her lot will get some coverage when I make the Merc unit lorewarriors. The next one is going to be another three part series about the Star League, then it's mercs. Great vid man, really love the details you put into this video. One thing i never understood though is where did comstar get all these elite/veteran troopers? To the best of my knowledge comstar never fought any major campaigns within the inner sphere. The lore however, makes it sound like these troops were experienced combatants.
@CriticalRocket
@CriticalRocket 8 жыл бұрын
Well comstar had been conducting clandestine missions for years against the great houses. Usually when one of the houses were close to discovering a lost star league cache or possibly a wreck of a ship etc. basically anything they could use to improve their tech level. So some units would be dropped in all white 'mechs to attack the target and make sure no one reports what was there. The battletech universe was full of reports of unidentified white battlemechs that hadn't been seen in centuries, usually leading to one house accusing the other of attacking them. Nobody suspected Comstar of having a fully functioning army, let alone one equipped exclusively with Star League era tech.
@lucassmith4524
@lucassmith4524 6 жыл бұрын
I believe, along with what crit said a year ago, Comstar inherited several BrianCastles, including a very large one on Terra. Also, ComStar has interests stretching far and wide across the Inner Sphere and periphery. The security apparatus to keep all those HPG stations not only safe but Untouchable would have to be /seen/ as being truly massive. Keeping all those Troops secret would not help ComStar...I would think.
@WordBearer86
@WordBearer86 6 жыл бұрын
@Lucas Smith What kept the Houses from going after ComStar, primarily, was that if it were to occur Comstar would 'excommunicate' that House from their services effectively putting an entire Successor State in a communications blackout. Comstar was the only institution that had the knowledge and technical expertise to operate and maintain the HPG networks and you could only learn this knowledge after decades of indoctrination, usually starting at a very young age. Additionally being that Comstar's services are provided to all, their influence reaches up to the highest levels of a society - and down to the lowest. They don't even really need an army, the Com Guards are mostly there as a trump card should all else fail. Their chief deterrence to aggression, in short, is the dependency everyone has on them.
@lucassmith4524
@lucassmith4524 6 жыл бұрын
Ulric Kessler This is all true of course. However in the war of 3039 Hanse Davion, foreseeing a blackout band his scientists working on a so called “black box” technology , that, when coupled with jump ship command circuits, enabled him to continue fighting. This did not help his economy, which is, in my view, he sued for peace.
@WordBearer86
@WordBearer86 6 жыл бұрын
The black box technology did indeed help Hanse Davion continue his war, but they were essentially HPG versions of a fax machine and if memory serves they had a very limited range and the information that could be sent was vastly limited in comparison to an actual HPG 'data packet'. Even then, and as you've pointed out, they still relied on ships to operate as message couriers. Had Hanse perhaps figured out a way of introducing such devices to the civilian market things may have turned out differently. My initial point however is not over the Fourth Succession war, nor as to why Hanse Davion ended it - personally I think there were a number of factors contributing to it. However since you bought it up this actually furthers my point as to why ComStar does not actually need it's military force to be seen in order to protect it's facilities. This being that the ComStar blackout was one of the big reasons why the FedCom economy began to crumble - in addition to the drain the war was having on it already. That communications blackout was universal, it affects not just the Fed Com military but it's public and private sectors too. All things from trade, resource gathering and material production, and the state infrastructure as a whole depend on communications being quick and efficient in order to function at all. I mean the list just goes on and on as to the wide and multi-variant ways in which being excommunicated by ComStar is more than enough to bring a Successor State to it's knees given little time with little effort. Why bother showing everyone that you have an army as a contingency plan, when you can hide that army and it's strengths/weaknesses from being observed by potentially hostile powers it may very well one day be called upon to fight? If anyone makes a power grab against ComStar, ComStar will be pissing in that dumb ass's cheerios and their wheaties within minutes (slight exaggeration, but it gives me a chuckle).

I again need to express how FASA seemed to make clan Wolf just too powerful than the other clans. This was the clan's Vietnam. (Clan Wolf was likely mirrored off of US Special Forces) Com Star hand not only numbers but Star League level equipment. (Technical Readout 2750) The plan was to break the tip of the spear of each of the clans elite units. The movie 300 comes to mind. The best of the best getting worn down by sheer numbers. (The other half being the lack of logistics on the clan side)
