I think the Nein, Beau Jester and Veth especially, help him by providing chaotic distractions that allow him to focus on something other than his melancholy. He’s excited to work with them, not only because they are his friends, but also because it’s something for him to work on. I get the vibe that Caleb functions best when he has a project to work on, like with his attempts to fix Nott.

And you know what? 1. I feel like Matt really appreciates these moments where he can just wind down and enjoy it as a bystander and not have to be ready for whatever the players want to do next and so do the viewers as it's a more laid back experience and 2. I think my favourite is still Pike's from C1, with "Diabetis" as the punchline, with the Wilford Brimley pronunciation. (Not saying where or the setup for the punchline to avoid campaign 1 spoilers). Part of it is that with Ashley coming and going so much, she hardly ever got out of her shell and into the game enough to show her sense of humour, so this was the first time I really saw that side of her. There have certainly been lots of great ones, but that one stuck in my mind for those reasons, as well as just the great timing; what a choice to drop that bomb on a serious RP moment.

The way I see it, they hit it on the head on a few different points, concerning Astrid. Yes, she works for Trent, yes, she is tricky by nature, thanks to her upbringing, but she also wants him gone just as much as Caleb. But at dinner, Trent said, and I believe that he's been saying it to them both for years since Caleb was institutionalized, that Caleb had the most power and potential out of the three of them. Astrid is scared at the thought of facing Trent, who himself is a master of the arcane arts with decades of experience under his belt, but also because he instilled in them that compared to Caleb, they are lacking in some regard, so she holds herself back from taking the initiative. She will fight him, only if the M9 start it; she wont make the first move. Also, I think she does care for Caleb, I do, but there is merit in the idea that she is using caleb to do her dirty work. But that ties back into her fear. Im starting to see Astrid as sort of the Cassandra of Campaign 2; she knows its wrong, she knows she working with a putrid person, but she cant do anything except go along for the ride.

Trent has definitely gaslit Astrid into believing she was and is weaker than Caleb. We can see her struggle of self acceptance and confidence whenever they speak to her.

@@j.g.9045 At this point, I am inclined to believe that she, like Caleb, wants to see Trent horribly maimed, but the fear of fighting someone with decades more magic experience, and being told you are inferior to your former classmate for what i am assuming years, both have taken their toll, and she will not make the first move. If they get through Lucien, and come back, and Caleb wants to finally do something about Trent, Astris, and possibly Eadwulf too, will move only if that happens.

@@j.g.9045 I have to slightly disagree with you. Tyler Church brought up some really good points, and Trent is a duplicitous piece of shit, but I think he's the "the-truth-is-my-weapon" kind of guy. Caleb has become disturbingly powerful in a very short amount of time by repeatedly defeating powerful enemies in do or die situations. While I'm sure Astrid and Eodwulf are powerful in their own right, I doubt that aside from assassinations, skullduggery, and perhaps some brief field assignments, neither of them have near so much actual experience between them. Even in their own missions, they probably didn't have to fight that often, seeing as how they were impromptu executions and not combat. Now that I say that though, Eodwulf has always sounded like muscle to me. He might actually be a Eldritch Knight or Bladesinger, and Trent's attack dog. Not more powerful, but more familiar with violence, which may also be why Astrid is freaking out. Theoretically, she should be able to rely on Eodwulf, and Eodwulf certainly would help her, but only if she wins. If not, she could be taking them both on, and now she's double-effed.

We have to be clear that Astrid and 'Wolf are victims just as much as Caleb. The whole Bren losing his mind for 10 years thing was manufactured by Trent, and I think he very much used the ongoing care of Bren as a way to hold Astrid and Wolf hostage to him as they both loved Bren. Since then he has probably had Astrid & Wolf do many bad things and tie themselves up in knots of conflicting morality. They may to some extent feel like it was their love of Bren that compromised them and resent him a little for that, or know that there is sufficient blackmail against them to keep them in line. And then they probably do have some selfish motivations built up over the years as they got pulled into the system deeper. Caleb isn't Bren. They don't love him, they loved Bren. They may think of Caleb to some extent like Lucien thinks of Molly, as a fragment or even as a completely false personality. But enough remains to compromise their emotions like the M9 are compromised toward Lucien. I think she is in a really tough position torn between love of Bren & Wolf, duty to the Empire, self interest, and hatred of Trent. She can't act alone or be seen to take the lead in any action and might see working on the inside as the least bad option, but one she hopes that Caleb and the M9 will free her from in time.

Although it was misplaced as she made Keyleth to be a character learning to lead so her making poor judgment calls and being a hypocrite are part of that. I think the narrative problem around that was the other characters calling her a leader prematurely and not helping her learn from her missteps. I also think the hate stayed on that character more than others because the cast and characters defended the her actions even when Marissa admitted Keyleth(not her) messed up. But the twitch chat is terrible and I never leave it open anymore because it's all back seating.

@@roundguy8793 She's a Zealot Barbarian, which is basically as close as you can get to a paladin and her charisma is one of, if not her weakest stat. I'm sure Matt will come up with a way in game for her to 'prove her worthiness' to wield the sword without having to take a level in a class that would be terrible for her build.

As an aasimar avatar of the storm lord, zealot barbarian tied twice by race and class as an avenger of a deity, I think Matt will definitely create a test of worthiness that allows her to bypass that restriction. In the same way he bumped Fjords strength to 13 to allow him to take paladin levels.
