An article I read a few years back said he’s basically the only child star that didn’t make you cringe with cheesiness. I teach kids that are 11 years old ... it’s impossible to imagine any of them being able to do this (not an insult to them, but an acknowledgment of Michael being basically superhuman from birth!) And you wouldn’t believe he could do all of this if we didn’t have proof! Doing it better than professional, veteran performers by 11! No one will ever come near to his greatness!

Mrs. Jackson said Michael was a kid with an old soul. Michael loved to dance at a very young age. Michael could watch someone dance then turned around and do the same steps on the first try. Michael was a Gift from God to enlighten our hearts.

James was never signed with Motown. Barry Gordy wanted to sign him to Motown once but James declined because they were to "polished" for his raw, spontaneous style of performance.

Love these performances so much. Michael was such a little treasure. (He was not 9, he was 11...Motown had him lie about his age for the first few years.) Dick Clark wasn’t being creepy, he was rolling his eyes at the reaction of the girls to Michael...especially since they were mostly significantly older than he was! Miss you MJ ❤️ Ps. “There was a time” is a James Brown song, and that was MJ making him proud 😉

This was the first of many performances by The Jackson Family, either as a Group or Solo Acts. Their Debut Song "I Want You Back" was considered to be by Rolling Stone The Best Debut Record Of All Time. One of the Co Writers Alfonso "Fonce" Mizell is a distant Relative of Jam Master J of Run DMC as well as Veronica "Ronnie" Bennett and her Sister Estelle of The Ronettes as well as their Late Cousin Nedra Talley. He also could be related to Vernie & Easther Bennett of The UK Girlband Eternal. "Fonce" would later co write ABC, The Love You Save and "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday' from Cooley High that Boyz To Men would later record.

Just imagine being a child yourself, 5 years old, and already knowing who he was, and watching this live show on TV in black and white, and the happiness it brought you as a child that there were beautiful famous children who could entertaiin us all! My parents let us stay up late to watch, they were going to watch anyway, and we got to see the J5 whatever Variety or late show they were on, their cartoons, the J5 OWNED this country, including our parents and grandparents back in the day, ( these were family bonding experiences, and I am so happy I was brought up to grow up at the same time that Michael was! I grew up with him always being in my life, my mom even named my brother Ben when in 1972 Michael sang that song at the Oscars. My grandmother loved MJ and Elvis (we all loved Elvis too) and when Elvis died, she said after crying for days, "at least we still have Michael." When Michael died, I did something totally out of character for me- I took a bus from New Jersey to New York City by myself (all of my friends had kids and couldn't go) and went to the Michael Jackson Memorial ALL Night Dance Party at the Nokia Theater on his birthday, that Summer we lost him. It was THE best Party I was ever at in my life at a Club, and I went to a lot of great ones. But, nightclubbing days over, I still loved to dance and at 45 was in a Mosh Pit for the first time and it was GREAT!!! The most beautiful, loving, kind peaceful people were at this Party. Solange Knowles saw me sitting alone, and asked me to join their table and I did, it was hard to hear and talk to people because thankfully the music was loud, but I didn't stay in one place very long- I was there to dance! The DJ was some big name DJ, and you can find the videos from that party here on KZbin. We drank and danced and watched all of the videos as we danced to J5, and every song of Michael's, Janet's, and even Rebbes Centipede! I met and danced with a LOT of great people. I felt like I knew them all! People who are fans of Michael are the best people. So warm, kind, generous, I only had to buy one of my drinks that night! I was sweating bullets because this was the end of August and it was fricking hot, but I was so happy! I honored my love, Michael and his family, and I took the bus back to at 5am in the morning, exhausted. I got home, slept all day, and couldn't walk the next day from dancing so much, LOL! It was great.

Gene Chandler first recorded There was a time in 1962. James Brown recorded it in 1967. Switched the song a bit to taylor made the dances mentioned in the song. The re is a studio version, the live recording is on James Brown live at the Apollo Vol. 2, and the first live appearance on camera available right now is James Brown live at at The Boston Gardens 1968. Michael said mentioned publicably that James Brown is his his most influencial artist. U can see in this video that Michael had that James Brown rhythm in him. Michael actually in his later years in concert starting paying tribute by doing a bit of James in his bits. Both performances is dynamic. Michael's confidence at that time as well as the group was practically unheard of then which is why to this day they are the benchmark to which groups are judged. James Brown was a once in a lifetime performer.

The First Song they are singing in Black & White is Zippa Dee Do Dah from Song Of The South from Disney which to this day has not been released on VHS, Blu Ray, and DVD. It is considered to be racially offensive. In Australia a Group called The Easybeats did their version. Ironically they are Singing a James Brown Song and not only did Michael share a Stage with his "Idol" he now owns his Catalogue. Back in the day especially in the 1960's if you did American Bandstand you had "arrived".

That was not the moonwalk, he was just doing the James Brown dsnce very fast, and from that camera angle it looked like the moonwalk. ( but actually the real name of the dance was called the backslide, the moonwalk was a different dance, people confused the two and the name stuck.) It originally came out in the 1940s by black tap dancers.

You cut out the part when Dick Clark was talking about Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers. This is a very significant group, their heyday was in the mid 1950s (1955-57, around that time). They are considered to be the first popular teenage boy group that lay the foundation for the Jackson 5. Frankie Lymon's story was tragic and his life was cut short. Both him and the teenagers didn't have the right people around to guide and further facilitate their success like the J5.
