CRKT RITUAL - Can you remove the spring assist?

I think most aspects of this knife are amazing. But some in the knife community are left scratching their heads when CRKT this year decided to go full on with assisted openers with ball bearing pivots. Smooth, but in some ways redundant. Why not manual bearings? What do you think?

it's not a theory, but spring assisted knives grossly outsell non assisted knives for all walmart carried knife brands (crkt, kershaw, etc.) For them it's a no brainer to make their blades assisted. it makes non-knife people feel like they've got a switchblade. it's only us knife nerds that dislike (myself included) assisted opening knives. but we're a loud minority of overall knife sales.

I agree but at the same time, with this knife selling at $90, majority of potential buyers are knife people that probably dislike assisted knives.

You could put a ball in the pommel end of the spring assist slot and a detent spring in the bolster and get this to work as a detent- ball can engage the spring hole in the blade

The assisted open on this knife is the only thing stopping me from making it an instant purchase. If this version came with ball bearings instead, I'd love it unconditionally and consider it near perfect for me. I know the Ritual Compact is non-assisted, but it's just not the same to me.

Figure out where the detent is suppouse to go put a center punch divot in it tiny bit of drilling just enough for a divot. Deassisted ritual and voided warranty

Bearings have gotten extremely cheap, and they allow CRKT to make the action smoother. Also bearings are more forgiving in respect to tightness of the pivot screw. Kershaw is trying bearings with SpeedSafe this year too in their Collateral. By the way, it's a torsion spring, not a torsion bar.

I think SOG was the first manufacturer to use bearings with the assist.

Nice knife. Thank you for taking yours apart on the internet for all of us to watch. I notice a lot of knife snobs shun the spring assist but I can't understand why? Why would you take apart a perfectly functioning, fast, smooth knife? Thank you again for solving the question.

I think it is mostly about having control. With an assisted knife, it shoots out like a switchblade every time. If you want to have a slow, controlled open, say in a quiet location, that is not an option with an assisted opener. A manual knife though, can usually be flicked open just as fast as an assisted knife, but you also get the option to slow roll it open as well.

This is my first assisted blade knife and I hate it. I took it out of my pocket this morning and I must have just barely hit the flipper. The knife shot open, out of my hand and landed point first on the ground and bent the tip. At least it didn't hit my foot. Feels like a waste of money so far. There's no way to put a different spring in there?

LTK tried to de-assist the CRKT Lanny and failed for the same reason (no detent).

Won't the hot water ruin the heat treat on the blade resulting in brittleness and breakage? You can also use the tip of a soldering iron.

No, hot water doesn't nearly get hot enough to mess with that, even boiling.

Yes, I like the size for this style of knife, but it can be a bit much. Look up the Massdrop Terzoula Persian for a similar style but smaller knife. Spendy though.

What's up with it? In my country foldable knives with 150 mm blade length are allowed (this knife's blade has only 110 mm). How big knives can you carry?

The size is an attribute for me. I detest minis. No knife laws where I live and Cary several autos an a cold steel bowie that has about a 10" blade. Thec heck what anybody else thinks I' ll be carrying the biggest autos and a large fixed blade

Not that I dislike it all the time. But there are sometimes practical limitations that make an assisted knife impractical to use as an EDC. Sometimes having a slow, controllable opening method can be useful when you are not trying to be noticed, especially with a 4+ inch blade. The hearty "THWACK" this suckers makes everytime you use it does tend to grab attention. Also, CRKT has shown in the past that they can make excellent, NON-assisted IKBS opening knives. Not sure why they went with an assist on this knife, as well as many others in the 2021 Catalog.

@@sodalines I'm assuming you've never been confronted with the NY blade laws in that case and I'm certain you've never had to deal with an alternate state CCP issue, but even playing Devils Advocate and knowing how that would play out, I don't disagree with you and I feel the same way but should an issue ever arise I don't believe it's gonna play out well in our favor my friend.
