Hi Kaila - Thank you for reviewing the CRKT Sakimori designed by James Williams. We appreciate the feedback we get from you and the community. CRKT

blown away by this knife. Its definitely got it all, O1 tool steel, .250" thick, kydex sheath, a Japanese style blade excellent for cutting and slashing yet rugged enough for camp chores. I love the grippy handle too very impressed, no need for a guard when the handle is that grippy. Tell CRKT they nailed it with this one.

What is the fascination of splitting wood with a knife? Everyone seems to think a knife's ability to split firewood is the gold standard for testing them. Knives are made to cut. They make a very good tool for splitting wood however, an axe. All that aside, kudos to your knife making skills. Your skills def seem to be evolving with time.

As much as knives are a beautiful, ultimately they are tools. If anything it is a testament to the utility of the knife. Also hitting the back of a knife with a piece of wood is viable method to cut down trees and has been done for centuries.

I just placed an order for a Sakimori, as I love Japanese style cord-wrapped handled knives, and CRKT is one of my favorite production knife companies. It's a little bit bigger of a knife than I had initially thought, but looks nice and will work well for me. Thanks for the video. Thumbs up.

Thanks that's a useful video. Using it for bushcraft stuff is a bit like cutting a tree down with an uzi in that it is possible but why do it.... still it does demonstrate it's strength and sharpness. I was wondering if there's a worry of your hand running up onto the blade without there being any kind of guard?
@Hypurman18 жыл бұрын
+chipoftheundead I was thinking the exact same thing!! Torture test is one thing, but why use the tool for something it wasn't meant for? "So, I was able to use this applesauce to de-rust and polish this engine. And it tastes great!!"

Good demo vid! I stick all my Williams/CRKT blades in my waistband just like you do. Front or back, works equally well, even with bigger ones like Shinbu. Hissatsu will actually slide completely into an empty belt-loop and stay there even when running around. It's my favorite for that reason alone.

I prefer the Shinbu as a close-combat knife, but the Sakimori is pretty darn nice as it is. I particularly like the sheath. I wish James Williams' other blades came with similar options...the adjustable tension koiguchi is nice, and the overall shape is a little slimmer and neater. Good review!

I read an article a few years back regarding firearms storage - specifically about coating the metal parts with oil. Basically the guy said how you would not think of pouring oil all over your car to prevent it from rusting. He uses paste wax to coat his firearms and knives. I've done this with some of my blades (the ones that sit in the safe for a long time) and have been happy with the results. Don't know if there could be any negative affects with certain metals or finishes though.

Hi Kaila, It's amazing to see just how far you've came along making knives,CRKT will soon be making your designs. Keep grinding away! P.S. Kaila, that knife is too nice to be used for batoning wood and clearing brush. It's much more of a collector's piece.imho.

jroberts1824 - No, that would be fine. Just the humidity has an effect on high performance high carbon steels like 01 Tool Steel. Thank you for your question! CRKT
@christopherc768710 жыл бұрын
Looks like it'll do similar work to a bowie. I've got one in O1 steel. For the 'haters' out there, it doesn't physically matter where a knife is made. It matters how it's made, and the quality control. I've gotten 'bad' stuff from China, and 'good' stuff. I have so far never gotten a lemon from CRKT. I've got some American-made knives, and generally when you have two knives made of similar steels, with similar designs, made by different countries, they will perform about as well, if they're made properly. The Sakimori is made properly. Any knife can be abused, though. The best way to ensure your knife keeps doing what you need it to is to know what you want to do with it, and don't try to do something common sense tells you not to do. A fighting knife is a fighting knife, and a utility knife is a utility knife. Barring very few exceptions, one will not consistently do the work of the other. Great review.

the sheath looks very similar to my SOG Gov-Tac. the O1 tool steel does put me off as i live in a damp climate and previous O1 blades have rusted like a SOB despite mineral oiling the blades. Dura coating the blade maybe an option but it would ruin it's looks. Even if Crkt ever comes out with an SS version i would most likely not get it, i would prefer something like the Fallkniven A1 for the money. Thanks for the review was informative and interesting.

Just FYI. I would recommend putting some type of safety lanyard on that knife if you're using it for that kind of work specifically. Better to be safe than slice your leg or foot or something.
@nicholasramirez254110 жыл бұрын
I can tell youre experience level in outdoor skill is quite good, ill even admit they are better than mine...that being said trying to save you from injury, I used to set my knife like you do before batoning by chopping it into the top, I learned real quick not to di it that way when I missed the wood and hit my pointer finger, it sliced me to the bone! so just some friendly advice in concern, not trying to sound like a know it all but I did unfortunately learn that the hard way, so I recommend not setting the blade that way...safety first, keep bringing the videos, I love them! :)

I like the design of the Sakimori very much, but i have to say that for such a price, i would expect a higher quality handle. The traditional wraping is cool, but i dont like the plastic at the end of the handle... Feels and looks kind of cheap.
@DHTHORNE9 жыл бұрын
xACACYNx I own the hisshou, and I would say it's the most rugged wrap I have ever encountered. It's not like the standard wrap you see on a Katana, even the highest priced once have a limited life span. While I agree, I would personally have prefered a more solid solution, like Micarta or some other scales, I believe James was clear on his Philosphy of Use for this series of blades. they are weapons first, and not really meant to be used as tools for other chores (the video shows you clearly CAN use them as such, but I would much prefer to use a BK like my BK9 or BK7 instead of one of these for camping chores.). That said, the cord wrap is actually one of the MOST secure and safe kinds of grip you can have on a combat "fighting" blade because of how much traction it gives you when it's done right. On the hisshou, the wrap feels almost like they used epoxy to keep it in place, and that little plastic collar bit isn't really going to get much abuse, it's mainly just a way to secure to the kydex. The pommel, while it is indeed wrapped by cord, is hard as a rock, and would do some serious damage if you bashed someone with it. Not as much as the exposed tang of a BK or many other knives would... but you get my point I think. Overall, if you use it as a combat knife, not a camp knife (except in extreme situations) this knife and the others in the line will serve you well.

Why would you make a knife for close quarter combat and not include a guard of some kind?
@9SS94Cr10 жыл бұрын
Because for the purpose of use this type of knives were designed, you won't need a hand guard. The handle material and shape offer more than enough traction, and for modern knife combat using hand guard to catch opponent's blade is very impractical. More over, large hand guards have tendencies to hook or grab on stuffs on soldiers, like rifle sling or ammo pouch.
