When “Quick Fixes” Make a Training Problem Worse

Quick fixes do exist. Sometimes a change in equipment to a saddle that fits better, or an adjustment in posture that immediately makes us more stable solves our problem, or our horse’s problem right away.
But other quick fixes seem to provide a solution, and then make the problem worse…
The difference is if the “quick fix” is working on the cause of the problem or only addressing a symptom.
Find out how your horse thinks and what motivates his behavior. Learn to communicate clearly to create a happy and willing riding partner in our Understanding Your Horse Free Mini Course: www.horseclass...

Bombproofing is kind of a lifelong thing. Some people only do enough to make it worse and then give up. My gelding was quite a spooky horse with crackly noises, especially above his ears and under his nose where he couldn't see. I go back to tarp training, flags and plastic bag training, every few months. That way I know he's still ok with things

My horse and I attended a clinic. The natural horseman presenting at the clinic showed me how to properly move the front end of my horse. When she was really confused, most likely because was positioning myself incorrectly, she would rear. At the time it seemed like a quick fix but we've never had the issue since. Yeah!!

Changing bits can be a quick fix. I thought our old horse hated bits, wasn't until I bought a harness and tried a driving bit that I realized it was the type of bit.

Have you had your horse examined by a vet? Maybe he is tense because he is in pain. Where do you keep him? Is he well cared for with gentle people or can there be some sort of abuse going on that’s causing him stress? I know a horse who doesn’t tolerate anyone petting him on the neck because he was abused. Is your horse getting enough time in pasture? Is he socializing with other horses? Mental health and stress play a huge role in both human and equine wellness, if pain is ruled out by a vet maybe you can look into that.

Thank you for the great video talk. I took a horse to a fix it clinic, bomb proofing, a bit ago. It came highly recommended and the trainer was local and had good bone fides. We went through the training. In my opinion, the clinic was designed to draw clients for the trainer. And once I got home, I couldn't replicate the training. we received no back up material or information for followup questions. And the horse is still reactive. So, yes I will be careful about about attending future events like this.

Love this. There are so many videos etc making money on innocent folks trying thier best for thier horses. Bottom line is it takes work. Studying and self education. Stop looking for so much advice and learn your horse.

How do I fix my horse being nasty under the saddle. He has never been nasty before. I have tried changing saddles. He pulls his ears back and kick other horses now on a trail ride. Buck when he is in the training arena. I ride him less and less and even other people are commenting that he has changed from the safest to a very dangerous ride

Try feeding him 1/4 cup of aloe vera juice (you can get it cheap in the pharmacy at Walmart) twice a day. If it makes a difference, have your vet scope him for ulcers.

I wonder if you could send Callie a video of the different behaviors and situations and see if she can do a video on it. Can’t hurt to ask.
