In today’s video, I reacted to Croatia’s entry for Eurovision 2023, ‘Mama ŠČ’ By Let 3.
I’m too confused right now. I honestly can’t tell if deep down there is a ‘genius’ behind it or it’s just weird. Send help.

Speaking shortly, it's a political satire. They mocking russian dictator putin and dictatorships in general. Also, it's an anti-war statement. There's more some small features which are for slavic languages speakers only, for example ŠČ is very roughly similar to the letter from russian alphabet which represents unique sound in russian language. Another linguistic thing here is despite the croatian lyrics, they are quite simple and, let's say, ukrainian speakers can easily understand and sing it.

The lead singer represents Soviet leader Joseph Stalin (and NOT a certain other mustacheioed dictator😅), while the bald guy with the missles represents Vladimir Lenin (''NJINLE'' on his forehead is an anagram of ''Lenjin'' / ''Lenin''). The first line of the song is ''Mom bought a tractor''. Since tractors are a common symbol of Belarus, this means ''Mother Russia bought Belarus''. It also refers to the gift that Lukashenko gave to Russia's leader on his 70th birthday. The second line is ''Mom loved a mor*n''. The ''mor*n'' is the current leader of the world's largest country. The third line is the whole Russian alphabet, since ''ŠČ'' is a Russian letter, and ''Mama ŠČ'' here means ''Mother Russia''. The next lines are ''Mom I'm going to play. Mom I'm going to war''. This means that world leaders treat wars like a game in which their soldiers are just ''playing'' to win. The final lines are ''That little psyc*opath. That little vile psyc*opath. Crocodile psyc*opath''. The ''crocodile'' has two meanings. One is Boris Johnson's statement that Russia's leader is like ''a crocodile eating your left leg'', while the second is that ''krokodil'' is a popular Russian drug that makes people act like zombies. The missles have the words ''NJINLE'' (anagram of ''Lenin'') and ''PAJČU'' (anagram of ''čupaj'' (to pull out), which means the opposite of to ''put in'').

@@darkobudak3504 Absolutely 🙂 It is a very well thought out performance, and in no way a "joke entry", as many would suggest upon their first viewing. The imperfect vocals give the song a kind of raw feel, and the chaotic staging actually goes well with a war theme. I actually missed a line of lyrics in my first post. When they say "Sha la la, armageddon nona", this sounds like a reference to how world leaders throw around threats of a nuclear war, as if it were just a game. It sounds like something a child would say when "playing" war games.

"Trajna Nina Armageddon Nona" means: Trajna Nina is a neutral verse but in the context is for example Bla Bla. Armagedon is Armageddon. Nona is Grandma. So, if Mama is Russia, Nona is the World. Follow the sequence of the Word:"Trajna Nina Armageddon Nona"

@@darkobudak3504 It's true that "nona" can mean grandma in some regions of Croatia (even though the standard Croatian word would be "baka"), and I see your logic regarding the link it has with "mama buying a tractor" and "loving a mor*n". However, I didn't really see how that would fit in with the context. It seemed to me that "nona" was meant to be a bit of a made up word here, like "trajna nina". So I assumed the line could be like a bit of a psyc*otic/desparate mocking of armageddon by people who are helpless to stop it. Like "yay, we are all gonna get turned into nothing".

Just a small help - Let 3 is long lasted punk band with a 35 yrs of experience, very provocational orientation, pushing over the usual limits, constantly. This song is just a small piece of anti war rock opera they are working on. It is filled with a lot of innuendo towards actual dictators. All in all it is song about average boy who has to go to war because of politics. We know what is actual now, considering war and dictators. Cheers!

This is much more serious song than it seems at the first glance! It's anti-war and anti-dictatorship protest rock opera like song and brutal mockery of "little vile psychop**h" which is interpreted by majority of music professionals as Putin himself and ALL OTHER mad dictators like him, played by the Let 3 - famous experimental and often extremely provocative Croatian art punk rock band that is active over 30 years and which also had numerous collaborations in theater peroformances including those with very serious directors. Lyrics description: "Mama ŠČ" = Mama Russia (among Russians "mother" symbolises their country), ŠČ is letter from the Russian alphabet. "Mother bought a tractor" = Belarus dictator Lukašenko gave to Putin tractor for his 70th birthday. "Mother loved a moron" = Mother Russia loved Putin. As i've written "little vile psychop**h" is also Putin and all mad agressors like him! Let 3 outfits and styling: military like clothes as the representation of all mad war thirsty dictators in combo with drag queen like clothes and makeup (provocation to homophobic Russian President and likewise dictatorial conservatives). Bald man is wearing dark scarf - alusion to Rasputin, another reference to Russia and on his forehead there's inscription "NJINLE" which is Croatian word play for LENJIN (NJIN + LE = LENJIN). Nuclear rockets are rather self-explanatory: "little vile psychop**h" from the Kremlin is constantly threatening with usage of nukes! Warm greetings from Croatia

Thank you for the insight. As a Slovenian, I have yet to understand why the title "ŠČ", from what I can tell it doesn't really mean anything. Would love to understand how Croats feel about this song. The band seems like a Croatian "Laibach" of sorts, I'm guessing those from generation X who follow Let 3 are having a laugh riot, the baby boomers are shocked and finally have "proof" things have truly gone to sh*t, and the youth is as bewildered as the rest of the world. And noone can take their eyes off of the song when they see it. Congrats, I think :-)

@@Geekofriendly "šč" - sound in Russian which has its own letter, щ as in "борщ". It's actually pronounced softer in Russian, but it's always been perceived/transcribed in Croatia as "šč".

My wife and I watched the Croatian selection show on KZbin, and as soon as we saw this, we both said, "THIS IS THE WINNER!" (although maybe not of Eurovision). And it won by a mile, thanks to a huge public vote. Will it qualify for the final? Probably not, sadly. But at least they sent something with er, balls this year LOL! 🙂 Don't stress about getting the reactions out to us - you've got until May! One of my new pet hates is the the latest KZbin trend where people are making "My Top 17 2023 Eurovision Songs" videos. And they're making a new one of these EVERY time a new song comes out. Give it a bloody rest, mate. Just wait until they're all out and do a "Top Everything" video. Rant over. I like the sound of that clock ...

Every masterpiece has a much deeper meaning. This is not a song for every ear or every mind. At first glance it looks stupid, but everything, everything has a hidden meaning: the singer's clothes symbolize a general whose clothes and conscience are stained with the blood of the victims; a singer in a black mantle-a church that supports the war, that's why he has 2 rockets in his hands. The sound and text are reminiscent of a children's song - the dictator is like a child who perceives the world as his toy and says to his mother (Russia or any other country): Mom, I'm going to war! Then the children's song ends and war chaos ensues. Because war spares no one. Neither the dictator, nor his people, nor those who defend themselves. Krokodil in Russia is the name for a type of drug that destroys the mind. That's why every dictator is a crocodile psychopath. etc...etc...That's just a small part of the explanation. It's hard to explain everything. For example, why does the general (singer) take off his clothes at the end? When he takes off his clothes, you can see his nakedness, he has nothing but his uniform, he is empty. But it also shows that he is only human too. As they say in Croatia: He is also bloody under the skin. That means - he is vulnerable. And he will end up like any dictator.

I find myself singing this, and I don't even speak a Slavic language! The lyrics are actually not that hard to learn. Quick linguistic note: The Slavic languages didn't really start splitting apart until 1000 years ago. Compare that to the Romance languages, which started diverging during the Roman Empire, but kicked into overdrive after the fall of Rome. So every country speaking a Slavic language can kinda-sorta get the gist of any of the other Slavic languages. Which means every country speaking a Slavic language is gonna know what the lyrics are saying. And they're gonna Understand what this is about by the middle of the song. And they'll realize how genius it is. The rest of us? We're gonna be left scratching our heads wondering W.T.F. is going on?!?!?!? Some people may pick up on the words "moron[a]" and "psychopath", but even then, we're not gonna clue in. So there's going to be a *_MASSIVE_* divide in how this is received.

You are right about the Slavic languages. I am Polish and I understood 80-90% hearing it the first time. The exception was the Croat word for war (rat) which is different but otherwise the lyrics are simple to understand and sing.

For me it's a message against war and dictators at least that's what I understand. At first I was like you a little puzzled but the more I listen to it and the more I appreciate it. If we look at the number of views on KZbin they are in second place behind Norway and ahead of Spain then possible winners.

Tractor is a reference to Lukashenko's birthday gift for Putin. In the song, Putin is described as "little vile psychopath". The vocalist represents Stalin, while other guy has written on his head NJINLE (word game: LENIN). Mother ŠČ is a metaphor for mother Russia, and crocodile is a drug popular in Russia that makes people behave like zombies. All over the place, but I expected as much given the band. To be fair, I can tolerate it. Had the juries been sticking around for the semi-finals, they may well have been up against it but this may go through. 99% of viewers in May won't know anything about the message behind it, so whether that plays any part, I don't know. It's one of those Marmite entries where if you say you're not so keen on it, you may end up with plenty of vitriol coming your way. Anyway, at least it's different.

Just confirming Rach, you did just see that, you're not having a fever dream. I think. I... hope. I gotta lay off the coffee after hours. What I'm about to say will split opinions - this entire package is genius. Musically it's very rich and goes all sorts of directions, and is a very surrealist and roundabout way of expressing anti-war sentiments, whilst still being quite easy to see where it stands. It's strange you should say that there's nothing "regimented" about it though Rach, I mean look at the costumes and the marching rhythms (ba dum tss). Not sorry. It's kind of like what Georgia wanted to do last year, but with a clearer message that's slightly less open to interpretation and with a much more "artistic", shall we say, way of expressing it in terms of music. Visually both were excellent. I'm quite sure we'll be seeing Croatia in the final, it's memorable, no matter what you think of it, and I think it has more televote appeal than it let(s) (3) on. In short, I enjoy this A LOT, but not ticked off at your mark. It's a lot to swallow and I wasn't sure what the frick was up the first time either 🤣

I don't have educational background related to music but I know that you cannot analyse most of the rock and roll music and especially not punk the way she does. Rock&roll goes way beyond melody, chorus blabla. Lyrics matter, attitude matter...

I can understand how the song can be confusing to someone who is hearing it for the first time. So, let me try to explain the meaning. The song is basically an anti-war performance, making fun of the world’s most “famous” dictators. The title itself “Mama ŠČ” would be - Mother Russia (ŠČ being “the first letter of the oldest alphabet in the world"). The tractor is symbolism for president Alexander Lukashenko, who has aided Russia in the invasion, including gifting a tractor to Putin for his 70th birthday. The lyrics “mama kupila traktora” and “mama ljubila morona” - mama bought a tractor, mama kissed/loved a moron, I think is pretty much self explanatory, now that you know who mama is and what a tractor represents. “Onaj mali psihopat, mali podli psihopat, krokodilski psihopat” - that little psychopath, little vile psychopath, crocodile psychopath. Crocodile being a popular drug in Russia and psychopath… Well, pretty much any dictator ever. In this case, it’s clear who they’re talking about. The rocket guy has Njinle written on his forehead, it’s wordplay - Njin-Le/Le-Njin (Lenin). When you put all of this together, even musically the song makes complete sense. The beginning, when the song sounds even child like; because they are indeed acting like children playing their own little game of war and ego, while people around them die (hence the rest of the band on the floor surrounding the “main player”). The chaotic little opera part, because what is war if not chaotic? So even the “unclear” musical arrangement of the song is actually pretty clear and very clever, once you understand the story behind it. I hope I was able to bring the song justice in my explanation and that you will be able to watch and listen to it again with more clearence. 🙂 Greetings from Croatia! ŠČ!

It is not "one of theese" because the song is totally original and diferent from all other seen - this my article about the song on Wikipedia This is my text on Croatian Wikipedia about the song -- Mama ŠČ! is a song by the rock-punk group Let 3, which won at Dora 2023 held on February 11, 2023 in Opatija. The song will therefore represent Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool. According to the authors of more than 100 reactions to the song published so far on KZbin, the song is amazing - a spontaneous, organic and compact amalgam of metal-rock, children's (nursery) rhyme, punk, classical opera, psychedelic music, marching, slet (mass games) music, with a concrete reminiscence of chaotic Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, with elements of pop and even dance music. It is already clear that it is the most original song of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, and one of the most original Eurovision songs in general. According to the comments of numerous listeners on KZbin, it is an art song with a strong message, but also a parody. Let 3 complemented the ingeniously composed music with great choreography and stage performances, so many commentators on KZbin point out that it is immediately clear that this is an original masterpiece, which will undoubtedly be noticed and remain prominent in the annals of the Eurovision Song Contest. The words of the song are cryptic, and they mention the mom who bought a tractor, the mom who a moron, a small vile psychopath, armageddon-nona (grandmother), and they end-up with the line: "mom, I'm going to war". The meaning of the word "ŠČ", which is repeated after each verse, is particularly mysterious. The song is intentionally allusive (because Eurovision songs must not have any political message), and has a fluent meaning. The song immediately delighted the majority of the audience, and won overwhelmingly at Dora, although there are also those who react negatively to it, so it is clear that it does not leave anyone indifferent. This was obviously the intention of the authors, more than winning the competition. Despite this, some "Mama ŠČ!" already see as the winner of the competition, which largely coincides with the bookmakers' predictions. WIWIBLOGGS, a specialized portal for Eurovision, has published the results of its poll on the favorites among the 15 songs selected so far. The first place was taken by Let 3 and their song "Mama ŠČ!". 31,437 people participated in the survey, and “Mama ŠČ!” won the first place with incredible 53.99% of votes (16,974 votes). It feels like a backward step to send a circus act to Eurovision when it has produced so many worldwide selling artists in recent years. 5 bellowing cranks stood in a line like Morris dancers gives me Eurovision naughties vibes and entries like this challenge the credibility of the contest which is why I don’t agree with circus acts been sent. Rumor has it.. The song was on the Reference Group table (urgent meeting) before was accepted! The song itself is just all the Eurovision is about... Croatians are angry at one of their relatives who invaded another relative's house and they're singing their frustration in this crazy guilty pleasure. No nudes, the main condition for them! I think televoting will grant them the final spot, but jury will place them low in the final.

Loved it. I saw references to Kubrick's Dr Strangelove movie in the end. A great satire against war. Love it for it's dark humor and it's originality! Ps: I believe the stage performance misses a lot context comparing to the videoclip. Make sure you check the videoclip which is like a small movie, love it.
