This Easy Granny Square Blanket for Beginners is an updated version of one of my earlier patterns. While this tutorial uses five different colors of yarn, you could use just one color yarn, a self-striping yarn, or variegated yarn. This pattern is very easy and offers a few tips to help make a perfect project even without any crochet experience.

How do I make this with one colour? I was going well until the first colour switch as we end in the middle but due to the colour switch we then start in the corner, I’m not sure how to get back to the corner to continue with the same colour

See the video tutorial at 12:47 to see how to end one color (and darn in the tail ends), then see 14:24 on how to start the new color, and then you can see it again at 17:10. See 18:12 on how to turn your work and do a second round in the same color. You always finish your last round where it is done and then begin the new color in a corner.

Love your granny square video. I really like that you only chain two when starting a cluster for the first dc in a new cluster. Turning makes so much sense too, I love that I learned from your videos because there’s a zillion out there on granny squares. Honestly one thing I do differently from your video/pattern is only chain four instead of five you teach at the beginning to form a circle 🫣I just like the look of a smaller hole .🩷Thank you for your teaching crochet videos, I truly appreciate it.🥰🙏

I’m not new to crochet but I’ve never made a large granny square afghan, so this will be my first time making one. I was a bit lost on the final row when you put the edging on. Only 5 double crochets instead of 2 sets of 3 double crochets when you started the edging 21:20 ? I want to make sure so that my blanket doesn’t look wonky.
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 4 ай бұрын
The last round is done as a full double crochet round. It's not clusters of 3 dc's with a chain 1 in between. The corner is made with 5 dc's to get around the corner, without it being too 'full'. You may want to do 6 dc's in the corners if you have tight tension, but 5 should do it. You are then doing 1 dc in each stitch, including the chain stitches, creating the solid border.

I have yarn that recommends using a 5.5mm crochet hook. I’ve done too rounds and the yarn is rather thick to work with. Is this the wrong type of yarn? It’s 100 percent acrylic.
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 4 ай бұрын
The yarn I use is a number 4 medium weight acrylic yarn, and the recommended hook size is 5mm on the package. This weight yarn is also know as "aran" or "worsted weight" yarn. Within this weight range, yarns can vary in actual size quite a bit. If you are finding the yarn too thick to work with, then you may want to find a different brand and weight. All the details for this project are in the written pattern: patriciafentie.com/2022/05/22/easy-granny-square-blanket-for-beginners/

I would recommend starting with my Beginner Crochet tutorials so you learn proper techniques: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWXag4Rma7Sdhck and kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3fSaKKObLaHeqM. This crocheted bracelet is the best beginner project because it is done using only the chain stitch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIuTdmuVobaLqtU Then this headband is made using a simple single crochet stitch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKeopniqg8mAp6s and can be sewn together as shown in that tutorial or with the knot look of this tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nX3FYX-AaZuEq68 This headband is also good for beginners, but the first one is even easier. Start with small projects like these and then graduate to something like a scarf or granny squares. I wouldn't start with a blanket until you've made a couple of smaller projects. Check out my playlists for all sorts of different projects!

There are two possibilities to create the blanket you want. The first is to make the square blanket until you reach the desired width of the blanket. Then you could add rows of the granny stitch on each end to get the blanket to the length you want. Stay tuned for a tutorial on the straight granny stitch, that will be my next tutorial. You could also make a rectangle blanket, but getting the proportions exact would take some special math (and I'm sorry I can't help you with that). But here is a tutorial for a rectangle blanket, and of course, you can make it as large as you like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKfbZIqqZdh6q68

I'm not sure if this new tutorial will come up for you in YT, but here is the GS straight stitch pattern. You can start in one corner of your blanket with a set of 3 dc, and in your case, you'll add a ch1 between the clusters. The second row would begin with the ch3 (as a dc) and end with a dc. Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ7Xf5pvnL6siKc

Hi love to make one,do I have to use all same size wool. I have many balls of wool left over n different sizes
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia Жыл бұрын
I think so, you will want to try to make the strands the same size. So if using a finer yarn, you may have to use 2 strands. If you have a bulky yarn, that will be the gauge you will start with and then create combinations of the smaller yarns to equal that size. So maybe a medium weight with a light weight to equal the bulky, then maybe 3 lightweights to equal the bulky...that sort of thing. Also you can change your crochet hook sizes to accommodate the different sizes of yarn. A larger hook will make the stitch larger and a smaller hook will make the stitch tighter and smaller. I hope that makes sense! Have fun!

A self striping yarn would be beautiful. Just continue with the pattern as shown for the first two rounds (the cream color). There is no need to change the yarn color, just carry on with the self striping yarn.

@@createandcrochetwithpatricia ok. Yes. I meant because I am turning and not creating a seam on the diagonal as I increase rounds. My end is not at the corner every round it will move ? So do I slip-stitch to the corner and chain to begin the round. And can I just chain up and start my cluster… say from the side of any cluster, the top. Etc. Sorry I was not clear the first time. And thank you so very much.

After the start chain and end of the round. We do not automatically end in a corner and start from the corner. As the round increases cluster’s so your begins point l moves. If I follow you exactly cut and start I’m clear. But I am not cutting and changing. So I tried slip stitching to The corner. But it got bulky and yucky. See what I mean. Ty. I love your tutorials. I am left handed. I can follow you without issue. That is not what I can say about every tutorial. Thank you again.

Ah, yes, I see what you mean. When you come to the end of the round (and you are not in a corner), join with a sl st into the 3 ch of the beg ch2 (or 3) of the prev rnd. Turn your work, sl st into the ch 1 sp (or sp btw 3dc clusters), ch 2 (or 3), 2 dc in ch1 sp (or sp). Carry on with the pattern.

When crocheting in rounds, the fabric can pull in the same direction and create a bit of a wonky shape. This is especially true for individuals who haven't mastered proper crochet tension. Turning the blanket for each round balances the tension. It also creates a fun texture, and makes it so there is no wrong side or right side...so lots of benefits! 👍👌

If we want to use the blanket outside should we use cotton instead??
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia Жыл бұрын
I would think that either cotton or acrylic would be fine outdoors. I can't say for sure though, this is just an opinion. The cotton might take longer to dry if it gets wet, but it might be more durable than the acrylic.

I do explain that in the video... it is to keep a balanced tension while crocheting in the round. Some people have tight tension which causes a large granny square to twist in the direction of crocheting.

I'm sorry, but I've never understood how to calculate a project by how much the yarn weighs. I've always used length. Every yarn will have a different weight depending on the material and the brand. For example, in the number 4 medium weight yarn class, Bernat Cotton has 77 meters per 50gms and Lion Brand Mandala has 105 meters per 50gms. The yarn I used for this project is Bernat Premium (#4) and it comes in at 83 meters per 50gms. So perhaps you can use that weight to calculate what you would need. 👍

Can this be made in cotton thread? Acrylic means wool right?
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia Жыл бұрын
You can use any type of yarn you desire! Wool is a natural fiber made from animal hair/fur such as sheep and alpaca, whereas acrylic yarn is a synthetic fiber and is much less expensive than natural fibers such as wool. All yarns also come in a variety of weights, and for this project I am using a number 4 medium weight yarn which is also called worsted in some countries.

It may have something to do with your tension. If it is too tight, that could cause it to curl. I have a tutorial on proper tension and another option is to use a larger crochet hook. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqmkh4eElLlmo80

@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia Жыл бұрын
For sure! It will be a much larger stitch and the blanket will be heavier, but it will work just fine. After a few rounds, you will be able to tell whether you like the chunkier yarn or not. The wonderful thing about crochet is that if you don't like it, you can just undo it! Have fun 😀

No, and you don't even have to turn your work...you can continue making the rounds all in one direction. This method of turning the work just helps to prevent the blanket from becoming twisted which can sometimes happen if crocheting all in one direction.

You can slow the speed of the video down to suit you. Just go to settings (the gear icon below the video), choose "playback speed" and choose 0.75.
