Perfectly put, sir! I crochet. Crocheted from the start. Too much at first. Not so much now. I'm convinced it has been key to helping my dreads to lock up quickly, and allowed instant results. This has been my journey of choice, and I'm happy with it. In the early days I over crocheted and they were too stiff. I've learned a technique (over 6 years) that doesn't damage hair or over tighten. Nowadays the only damage I do is to stab my finger if I lose concentration.

Then I had a job interview coming up so I got a crochet appointment to get them “office appropriate”. All dreads are amazing, go about your journey how you feel best suites you.

as someone with type 1 hair i use i latch hook occasionally just for the new baby hairs that grow in, my locs are fine on their own if the hair is already locked in it is locked in permanently but with such straight hair sometimes the new baby hairs have trouble finding where they need to go on their own and it ends up very messy every six months or so.

Thanks . I've had three sets of dreads over a 12 year period . My current set is the first time I've tried the crochet method . It's helped achieve thicker dreads that I struggled to achieve in free form . My aim was always to achieve massive dreads and the crochet method helped pull together 6- 10 dreads . It's also a great way to direct the free form . In other words now my smaller dreads have all been crocheted together they'll start growing out in that way . So I believe in both methods .

I appreciate this video it has a very well round view on crocheting your dreadlocks. I personally crochet mine for job purposes as well as the overall look. The key to crocheting is knowing how to crochet so if you don't know I don't recommend it because in my learning experience I have had breakage to some dreads due to my past inexperience self. But as time has passed I have learned the way of the hook. So it is all about how much you are willing to risk. Thanks again for this video.

title IX of the employee rights says they cannot make you comb them out or make them neater so you do not need to crochet or start over in fact in polls those who have freeform dreads are more ..much much more..likely to be employed then those with maintained locks..because your givving up your 1 legal defence that makes dreads acceptable in any job

I appreciate this video soooooo much! I have VERY young dreadlocks and I am unhappy with how loose and fuzzy they are right now. So I began to crochet and flip roots while palm rolling and such. Now I believe I will WAIT before I do any more because I do want that croched look, but I do not want to run the risk of damaging the hair before it can mature and lock in properly. I'm so glad I could watch this and learn the pros and cons!!

I got good results when I left them for 12 months then went back in with a *fine crochet hook and tidied them up. They were messy for a year and I didn't think I would be able to get a crochet hook through them as they were dense, but as I began a minimal tidy I found the crochet hook penetrated them easy, so I went forth and gave them a good tidy and since then left them alone .. I love these guys I share my life with - my dreads ..
@drakeboutte13499 жыл бұрын
I crochet my own every like 6 months just to tame the new growth, and kinda guide it where I would like my loose hair/new growth to go. I believe crochet at moderation have less chance for negative effects. I'm at a year and a half so I've only crochet a couple times; but I won't do my whole head at once just 10 hear and 10 there. When I start other peoples dreads I always backcomb and then crochet and I won't crochet them again for about a year. I do this to guide all that not mature hair to where I'll like them to go and over time it gets loose and messy but still stay together long enough but short enough so that they'll never need to be redone like mine had to be. Everyone I did are having positive results, and are going through their regular process of locking up, but once they hit that year mature mark they'll be sold and naturally neat so that maintenance isn't anything, and they always look good. So my method is to do all the work in one shot and that work last the dreads the lifespan the person sets for them. I agree with you Lazy Dreads. Great post.

I first seen this video about two years ago. I crocheted and human hair extended. And now I’ve been practicing the lazy approach and I see the difference between healthy and moving locks vs dry stiff tightly bounded crocheted hair. That being said I may not be very good at crocheting hair and at the Florida st.pete dolly locks salon tore up my locks. It was heart breaking painful and expensive lol For me personally and my life style I like letting Time and care to lock my locks. I want my hair to look and feel and be matted healthy moving hair. I’m not there yet. Maybe at my four year mark I’ll be closer and ready for a lock trim/cut. Thank you for your pragmatic approach and for sharing your experience. I’m glad I didn’t listen to you yet I’m thankful I heard you, so now I can understand and feel the experience lol 😂.

Amazing advice, I just started mine, im about 2 weeks in. I crocheted, but not for the aspect of having "mature" locks faster, I just wanted them cleaned up a bit. Then i'll go a month without crocheting them at all just palm rolling them. Then maybe touch up here and there lightly then proceed to do the same to allow my roots to grow with out major tightness to them always. I was iffy about starting dreads but once they got "Finished" though they are never really 'finished" I personally loved them! thanks for the advice !!

This will be interesting. I just got my Dreadlocks yesterday from scratch using the Crochet method, this video doesn't seem to talk so much about starting out from this method day dot. My locktician is very skilled and good at what she does and has done it for years. she agrees with Sea Salt being good for dreads maybe ill send in progress shots to your page in a few months time. keeping in mind they will be young dreads. But for now I honestly think dreads are the best thing that I have done they feel awesome I just wish they were a bit longer but I started shorter as I know they take time to mature anyway im sorta shoulder height at back and then a bit shorter around the sides atm.

@@EmeraldRod so I did crochet my hair less than back when I wrote the comment, but I didn´t really stop. What I did do is buy a smaller crochet needle (the smalles 0.5mm) which should be less damaging cause it doesn´t ripp too many hairs. My dreads look good to me and are around 10-11 months old now. I have been crocheting the roots around once a month myself. However I made an appointment with a professional to do it for me pretty soon. I´m curious what she thinks about the state of my dreads right now. Also I sometimes (not very often) started putting some coconut oil in my ends and I think that was good cause they got quite dry.

Some people use hair pieces instead of bleaching and dyeing their dreads. Just wrap it around the loc or use a strip of cloth or ribbon. Versatility without the risk of damage 😄
@YunaYansa6 жыл бұрын
Yup! This. I've heard people say that this is a dangerous method and will rip out your hair (only in the hands of hook-stabbing lunatics), or that it is a cheat (what? how is this any different than twirling, backcombing, rip & tear? it's just another method of 'teaching' the hair to lock), or that crochet isn't for all hair textures (I think it might be the only method that works equally well for all hair textures)... after all the research I did (which included watching a load of your videos on this channel!), I decided on the crochet method to start my locs. They are still baby locs, real locs (how could they be fake? like some people claim) going through the ugly phase etc, and there is no breakage or damage, because I found someone who had lots of experience doing it properly. I'm happy with the result.

I have straight hair. I wanted a natural look. Did twist and rip. No boxes just grab some hair and let it rip. Little palm roll. Then thread around the dreadlock instead of through it as you go. Less breakage that way. It could be a little loose but they will mature nicely. I enjoyed this video.☺️

Watching this video in 2022 is still relevant. I have baby locs (2 1/2 months old ) and the frizz in the body of my locs are driving me crazy I used the crochet this last time during my retwist and I love the result. I have soft hair so my hair isn’t gonna loc for at least a year and the frizz was unbearable. I know I’m going to have some frizz but the frizz my baby locs produces is mind blowing. I plan on using the crochet only when it’s time to retwist ( every 3 to 4 months) and I plan to use it 2 inches from the root to retighten as far as using it on the body of the loc I may hold off and not use it as much for that. Now I guess I’ll see how my hair will hold up after this new routine

i will add to this, when you crochet once..if its tight it can take up to 3 years to lose the stiffness. your absolutely right 1 crochet use will not cause dreads to break, but will break hairs that often pop out requiring more crochet to "fix" it wich breaks more.. your hairs strength relies on the average length of intact hairs it takes dozens to see any weakening at all, dreads are very strong when undamaged, however after hundreds of crochet sessions a dread that takes 1000 pounds to break can break with only ounces of pressure... a few dozen crochet sessions will not cause dreads to break but will damage them.. the biggest issue is in how extremely long it takes to recover from just 1 session ..and crochet dreads are generally scratchy, feeling like steel wool instead of soft flowing hair but as usual your informative and fair and balanced i will say that most people are not informed and most who crochet will insist that there is no possibility of damage
@albaasensi87888 жыл бұрын
Notice your display picture is similar to a person supporting freeform on a site I was on the other day. Wondering what your opinion is on begginging the journey with crochet.... then allowing freeform and natural the entire rest of the journey?? In terms of damage. xx
@soaringeagle8 жыл бұрын
well you were on the best site there is then but 1 use wont destroy them..but like i said if its tight it delays dreading by 6 months and takes about 3 years to recover you can still tell they were started with crochet for years and years in terms of damage they will be extra frizzy during recovery from all the broken hairs but wont be weak or anything you see a full head of dreads supports the weight of i think 3 to 8 full grown elephants (cant remember exact number but was between 3 and 8) that means a single 1 inch dread should take 1000 pounds at least crochetted to an extreme and they can break under their own weight! or just a few ounces so lets say crocheting once reduces the strength 20% ..which i doubt its more then 5-10% but even 20% thats alot stronger then they will ever need to be and not break.. so yes they will be damaged but no not to the point of danger of losing them what damage it does cause causes those loose frizzy broken hairs that makes you want to damage them more to fix them thats the biggest issue with crochet..once you start the damage it caused makes you want to do it again...and again..and again till they get to 90% weaker and beyond 1 use they will recover from..well the damage is permenant but eventually they will dread right and .. way longer then that they will stop looking so manufactured, and lose the stiffness go read up more on that site ya saw me on we dont promote freeform only ..we promote healthy dreads..freeeform being healthiest twist and rip next backcomb..and nothing but backcomb is right on the borderline reason being it permanently damages the hairs cuticles (scale like structures that cover the hair shaft) making them unable to function (open and close in response to changes in moisture, temp, and ph..they should provide the function of letting in nourishment and sealing out anything that harms the hair, but when they don't function they don't do what they are suppopsed to) so yea freeform and twist and rip (or twists/comb coils in african hair..but only to start) are what we recomend and minimal non invasive maintenance..like only separating

Hehehe okay I will look for that site again. Thank you so much for replying. This is clearly something you are passionate about which I apreciate and respect. I will consider and use all the information you just gave me. In all honesty I love the idea of totally natural free forming dreadlocks but even though my circumstances are conducive at the moment I can't very well make assumptions that in the future I will make all my forthcoming decisions based on my hair (if it became a hinderance) which in all likely will never occur anyway as I don't intend on deviating from my constitution for others, but sometimes for the greater good this can seem to be unnavoidable. I guess without the experience and knowledge what began as a soulfelt but impulsive (long held dream) decision to have hair that matches what it seems to want to do... is turning into quite a complicated task, when the entire intention was to make my hair less complicated haha Thanks for everything, Link to site? I'm putting permanent extensions in this June myself and I'm going to have to do the rip tare method clean them up with the crochet hook 0.5, then join the newly dreaded hair to the extension. Aside from getting everything to look uniform the first installation I don't plan on doing too much maintenance other than wash them normally with dread shampoo and use dollylocks conditioning oil and palm rolling while the hair is wet. I've done research and this method seems to work for several people who have demonstrated it and worn it for years. As long as I do not do too much crocheting after the installation, do you think it will be able to build on itself just fine? I know it has worked for sure for one youtuber I watch and she said she hadn't really had to maintain them other than the regular care, because they were done right the first time. I know dreading is a process and will take at least a month to form then 2 years to mature. I'm in this for the long hall so I'm trying to minimize the damage to my future dreads in any way I can, because I intend on having them potentially forever. So any advise is helpful. Thanks.

I crocheted once and then neglected... oh man it has been a tough ride. They are super knotted towards my roots but completely loose around the bottom.. so it looks half dreaded half loose hair. Been over a year and they still dont look very mature. Also where them in a bun a lot so thats probably why its taking extra long .

What about now?
@PinxPer175 жыл бұрын
brother xela I stopped putting my hair in a bun so much and also I bought some silk pillowcases, now my dreads are forming a bit better and look more mature.

@@PinxPer17 I just got mine done via crochet.... they are short about the size of a middle finger... planning on not getting any more maintenance on them again....does the loose hair work it's way into dreds on its own?
@PinxPer175 жыл бұрын
brother xela yeah any loose hair eventually locks up, you may always have a little loose hair on your tips however, unless you blunt the tips. What happened for me when I was starting, is my crocheted dreads pretty much unlocked themselves but still maintained its sections and then relocked in its natural way, giving you the neglect look. It will look really rough for a while, but if you hang in there for around a year you get beautiful neglect-freeform looking dreads. Apple cider vinegar is great for deep clean washing btw! ✌🏽🌈😁

my locks are only possible because of the crochet hook. my hair is so fine and fragile that I could not get my hair to grow past my shoulders or be thick enough to hold a braid or ponytail. now I will be able to do lots of things with my hair.

You explained it quite well, thanks! I started dreading my (curly) hair 2 months ago and I did use twist and rip, but I have crocheted them afterwards too. There's a video on my channel if you'd like to see how my dreadlocks turned out.

How long does it take for backcombed dreadlocks to fall down naturally and not stick out like sideshow bob?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
+Itachi8 Depends how tight to the root that they're backcombed. Usually takes a wash or two.

what about a felting needle?
@narcozez9 жыл бұрын
NOOOO! Please do not use a felting needle, stay away from that. There's no pros and cons debate with felting needles, it's incredibly damaging. Look into crocheting if you're looking for a way to tidy them. I hope you have a good journey :)

I crotchet mine, but very rarely. I don't see no issue from my experience but like anything I think there is a right way and a wrong way. my friend has had dreads 4 1/2 years and no damages, no thin or weak spots and he swears by the latch hook and crotchet needle method.
@soaringeagle8 жыл бұрын
these hooks do to extreme damage but its invisible damage, structural damage. a dread can simply fall off from diving in a pool or even in thye shower with no sign it was ever weakened at all (if you do it rarely the only sign of harm is the fact you have to do it again and again..why is it you still have to use it? you only see the damage when a yiu stop using it for a very long time (months down the line or more) or b a dread falls off btakes a good number of uses to get that far but on point a, when yiu feel the need to use it again thats because your seeing the harm its done and deciding to fix it by causing more harm to have a dread break off in 4 years would require excessive crocheting, but ... i've seen it happen in under 2 when it was real excessive

Is it okay to crochet at least once to start your dreads
@soaringeagle8 жыл бұрын
i would absolutely disagree as 1 use to start can delay dreading by 6 months and take 3 years to recover

My hair is very soft textured so i have to do the back comb crochet method i had 4 attempts with other methods did not work on my hair at all but crochet back comb is the best it depends on texture of hair in the end fyi love your videos

Hey lazy dreads, i have dreads and I have lots of loose hairs kinda like yours where the hair is straight and it isn't knotting. What do I do?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
Eddie Privette You either leave it to lock, try to encourage it to lock by wool rubbing it, spraying it with seal salt, or try to force it away via crochet or dreadballing. Which you should use is up to you upon deciding which you feel is the best fit for you.

i used the crochet hook the first 2 years of my dreads, one day i decided to let them grow naturally and they shrink a lot, now that they are almost 3 years and recently start to grow again. (sorry for my english, i speak spanish)

The reason why I turned to crocheting is because I have straight, sleek, thin Asian hair. I've tried about 4-5 times to wear dreads without corcheting, but they ALWAYS came out within some weeks. It usually got looser every time I showered. I believe I washed my hair 3 times a week and used dread shampoo. I didn't want to wash my hair any less than that because my hair would then smell bad and get dirty. I also palm rolled

Hey man, I had my dreads done nearly 3 months ago now (backcomb and crochet method) and I like the idea of leaving my dreads to mature without much tampering. However, the roots concern me because they are bobbling up on some, and others are flaking out from the normal shape and looks nothing like it should. I have been root rubbing for maintenance at the roots and i feel that my attempts to dread the way is probably why these issues at the roots exist. What would you do or advise?

Hey my name is Davin! I've recently learned so much form this site and I have had dreadlocks for four months and then taken them out for a day or two and then put them back. Would they still continue the process?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
Davdahv If you brush the dreadlocks out from your hair, and then start some new ones, they'll progress - but they'll start over from day 1 again.

@Lyrog7 жыл бұрын
Does this mean that the backcomb method also destroys hair? Because every time you stick that thick comb through your hair, you are probably going to break some. There is so much contradicting advice on the internet and I have no idea who to trust. Some people say drying hair with a towel will accelerate the process because of the moving around, other say it sends you months backwards in the journey.
@LazyDreads7 жыл бұрын
+Lord Hepton backcombing can also damage and break hairs, yes.

This answered my question perfectly! Thank you! I'm gonna let my hair grow for a few more months and definitely decide for sure then. As it stands though I think I may just end up crocheting! Thanks again! :)

3.5% of the water volumes the correct salinity, spray on or pour over head or use a shampoo that contains it like the dreadlockshampoo,com liquid do it before not after you wash 10 min ti a coule hours is more then enough, in fact just washing with the shampoo with it in it causes dozens of new dreads ezch time i use it (which isnt often since muine are very mature) (it also causes lots of congos in 1 wash haha) you dont need it often ven when starting out

Hey :) Have you heard of the 'lock sculpta'. They argue that their product actually strengthens the dreadlocks. What do you make of that?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын

@DrKjoergoe9 жыл бұрын
But how can you learn crocheting your dreads if it's that dangerous to do it without experience? And can crocheting prevent your dreads from washing out or is the result of it just optical?
@LazyDreads9 жыл бұрын
Kjoergoe To learn crochet without experience involves jumping in and taking the risk. The problem is, everyone thinks that - they are the one who is doing it right, they are the one who is crocheting the right way, and that they won't notice any damage because they've got it right - unfortunately, everyone thinks they're doing it the right way, and you only find out if you've been doing it the wrong way when it's too late. So it's a gamble.
