For those of your having trouble with the hood, I know she says don’t sew it together but that’s what I did and it fixed all the problems I was having. Also the button holes didn’t line up quite right for me, if you want more of and endless look crochet the last button hole a bit further towards the end of the scarf! Thank you otherwise for this tutorial tho!

When you work row 1 you work on both sides of the hood in one continuous row. It is like working a bag but you leave one side open, because we don't want a bag on our head. I am glad you figured out what worked for you. For the scarf I made I have a tail that hangs over the shoulder about 12 inches. You would need to move the button holes to make it more seamless looking but you might need to shorten the scarf too for that.

You want to make sure that on Row 1 you are working double crochet into both sides of the starting chain. So you create your start Chain and work a Double crochet into each chain (46 double crochet so far), then you turn your work and continue working row 1, by working double crochet into the opposite side of the starting chain. You will work another 46 double crochet into the opposite side of the starting chain for a total of 92 double crochet in row 1. By working a continuous row into both sides of the starting chain, this allows our hood to be joined at the top and does not need to be sewn.
@WindingRoadCrochet

For a video reference check out 1:54, you will notice the written instructions at the top of the screen say that Row 1 is continued with an additional 46 double crochet.

I’m going to make this with lion brand mandala yarn in griot, weight 3 with a 5mm hook, any suggestions for starting chain or should I just eyeball the length and go from there?
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet Жыл бұрын
Eyeballing the length will work. You can do the same when you start the scarf section. Just be aware that you are working into both sides of the starting chain and the starting chain acts as the very top of the hood.

I am trying this pattern and i am also strugling with the hood. After some comment reading, i determined that after creating my chainxand doing row 1 double crochet and then repeating on the opposite side i get 1 row of double crochet on both sides. I then continue to repeat this pattern and it seems like the back of my hood increases in stitches as i crochet around the back side in the "U" shaped method also my center pint, the single crochet looks to be off by a row. Maybe this will fix by ending on an odd numbered row and not an even number row.

Would this pattern work with the linked double crochet? I started the hood and found the yarn I'm using really shows the holes and I worry it wont be warm enough. I pulled up your linked double crochet tutorial and was hoping to use that stitch instead. Do you think it will still turn out?
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, maybe. The linked double crochet it just a bit smaller gauge. So I would just work it with a linked DC and as you work check to make sure you are happy with the size of the hood and the length of the scarf. If is a little small then add some extra chains.

Yes absolutely. Also when you make the scarf if you feel it is too long you can make it shorter by working less chains. Just make sure it will wrap around you neck twice.

So to create the hood shape, we're essentially starting with a foundation chain and then crocheting in a "U" shape back and forth around it, and as the "U" expands it will create a natural crease for the hood? I have attempted this pattern 3 times already and I would like to begin my 4th attempt with a clear understanding.

Thank you for commenting this! In the video it initially looks like once you do the opposite side of the chain you chain 2 and start just going down that one side. It’s not very clear that you have to work in that U shape. Totally explains why mine is just a square and doesn’t resemble a hood at all. A video showing the whole piece being worked without editing things out would have been so helpful.

i loved making this so perfect for my husband. Do you have a pattern for children?
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet 2 жыл бұрын
I am afraid not. You could chain the depth you want for the child's hood, then work rows until it is tall enough. Then chain out again until you have the length of the scarf you need. If you use 3/4 inch buttons you don't have to make button holes, just push the buttons through the existing stitches.

When you work row 1 you work on both sides of the chain, this creates the joined section at the top of the hood make sure you have 92 double crochet at the end of row one. The measurements are for the hood when it is laying flat, two layers thick. So it is 14 inches deep and 12 inches high.

It goes around the entire hood. Since we worked on both sides of the chain in row one, there is no sewing this hood together, so when you work the optional row, you will work up the hook, back down the hook and be on the other side of the hood when you start the next row.

@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on how many stitches you have per row. If you worked the full hood then you could just sew up the back of the hood. The pattern is made by creating a foundation chain and working both sides of the chain (in row 1) in a single continuous row. So at the end of row 1, you will have 92 double crochet. If you only have 46 double crochet per row then you only have half of the hood. (1:59) You would either need to start over or make a second hood half like you just made and sew the two pieces together. That choice is yours.
@deebee190
@deebee190 3 жыл бұрын
My gauge and yarn are smaller than the example, so my hood is like...child-sized after 23 rows. If I increase the number of rows by x number, would I just add the same number (x) for the chain that starts the scarf?
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet 3 жыл бұрын
What I would do is chain until you are happy with the depth of the hood, then work rows until your hood is as tall as you would like it to be. (Remember that the scarf is attached to the hood and adds to the hood height. Then make your extension chain and chain the length you would like the scarf to be. It is a very flexible pattern.

@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet Жыл бұрын
In row 1 we worked into both sides of the starting chain. So 46 DC down the first side of the chain, then we rotate the chain so we can continue to work another 46 DC down the second side of the turning chain. Row 1 is worked in one single row. It is similar to starting a project where you are working in joined rounds, but we are not joining the beginning and the end of row one because we are making a hood that needs the opening in the front.

Im a beginner and was happy to find a simple pattern with a video tutorial. I purchased the PDF on etsy. However i am noticing that the written instuctions dont include steps that are shown in the video. For example it looks like you are only crocheting in one loop of the DC in row 2 and this is not stated anywhere in the pattern. Also it looks like you are chaining 2 every other row but on the off rows are you starting in the 3rd stich from the hook?
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet Жыл бұрын
I will review the pattern. In the pattern rows 27-32 say BLODC, that stands for back loop only double crochet. At the end of the row you should CH2, and turn the work unless we are extending the row, which only happens once, or working the optional row which is a chain 1 because it is single crochet.
@effiemerrill727
@effiemerrill727 Жыл бұрын
This was in the begining of row 2. Since I posted this comment I have completed the hood. My dimensions are very different from yours even though my gage is accurate. I have only crocheted 12 rows and my work is about 3 feet long where as you say to crochet 26 rows that is supposed to come out to 12.5inches? The more I work on this pattern the more confusing it becomes. The math just doesn't add up. I should also mention that I have a very expierenced crocheter helping me work this pattern and they are just as confused as I am.

@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet 3 жыл бұрын
There is no sewing at all for the hood. In row one you work into both sides of the chain to create the joined top of the hood. You then lengthen the hood all as one completed piece. Then you extend one side to create the scarf, work rows to make the scarf thicker and the fasten off and sew on a button. The only sewing for the entire pattern is sewing on a button.

@@Brarshsmom3 At first I was a little confused as well......what it is is that you crochet on the other side of round one. So one side will be curved when you are done and one side will have the double crochets exposed. You crochet on both sides of the foundation chain in row one to create 92 double crochet. Then you turn and work back and forth over those 92 sts. Every row for the hood should have 92 stitches. Working both sides of the foundation chain makes the join at the top of the hood so there is no need to sew the top of the hood.
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet 2 жыл бұрын
When you crochet on both sides of the foundation chain it should be crocheted all as one continous row that has 92 DC total. You crochet down one side of the foundation chain, turn and crochet down the other side so that is all one continuous row. Then when you work back and forth you are creating the hood. The hood is joined at the top where the foundation chain is and it is joined in the back of the hood because we turned and worked a continuous row around the foundation chain.

I can try to help, but you will have to explain where you are having trouble.

I am doing this hood, but mine looks short with 48 chains in the beginning. Yours looks a lot longer

Did you work into both sides of the chain. Row 1 should have 96 stitches in one continuous row.

That works as well, I wanted to be able to make it all in a single piece without any sewing. (Except for the button).

Sorry but I don't understand how is the hood shape formed without sewing it. The camera doesn't show that step when you finished the hood or it's very close.

When you work the first chain, you crochet into both sides of the chain, that creates the joined top of the hood.

So you chain 48, then double crochet into each chain starting with the third chain from the hook, then turn your work so you are working down the other side of the chain and work another 46 stitches. So Row 1 has a total of 92 stitches.
