This was the first movie I ever say as a kid at 5 year old in Australia in a small country outback town. I still remember the wooden fold out seats and my mother taking me and my two brothers on a Sunday night to a packed cinema to see this. I was close to the front row and I remember all the laughs and cheers (especially the Kangaroo shooting back, biggest laugh of the whole film) and seeing one of our own on the big screen. I remember the end when Mick got up on peoples shoulders to get to Sue, the whole cinema got up and cheered and clapped as he did so, and there I was looking at the movie and seeing people hug one another and scream at the screen in joy. It was from then on I knew I wanted to be involved in films from that day on seeing how much a movie could move people like that. Been almost 40 years now, but I still remember that feeling.

A true classic. This movie basically charmed the entire western world at the time. Literally made everyone from all walks of life smile and buzz about it for a minute. He went from an Aussie treasure to a worldwide treasure. Must watch part 2. Fun fact: I always heard Paul Hogan met and fell in love with that actress on this movie in real life, left his wife for her, and they've been blissfully married for years and years ever since. They both became sort of a package deal "treasure". It feels like they basically only needed each other for their bliss and were pretty private, but it was the public that demanded they be on screen again a couple years later, cause they are too adorable. So they did part 2, and it's a perfect follow up. Then a couple decades passed and everyone was like "Feels like something's missing. Part of our soul is just forgotten. Oh yeah! We need Mick and Sue again!" So they did a part 3, much older, and we all loved seeing them again, but the movie was crap :-p Was just an excuse to get an update on our beloved example of true love finding each other from opposite ends of the Earth right before our very eyes.

I saw this in the theater when it came out, and the whole theater burst into cheers and applause at the ending, probably the greatest final scene in a romantic comedy. This was very popular the year it came out, and I still like it a lot. You identified its vibe very well. It unavoidably reminds me of “Tarzan’ New York Adventure” (1942), the best of the Weismuller’s later Tarzan movies. Paul Hogan became known in the U.S. for a very popular series of commercials he did for the Australia Tourism Board. He presented the same sort of character, a super-friendly regular guy who invited you to visit him in Australia. He capitalized on that popularity to make this movie. Unfortunately, you may notice that he was getting a bit old for his co-star, and after the two sequels, he didn’t do much else that was notable, probably because he had aged out of leading man role.

Adventures in Babysitting and Secret of my Success are two of my top favourite 80's movies. Hilarious comedies with KILLER soundtracks. For something very different - check out Big Business. Another 80's comedy - but has a super fun premise - and they do it SO WELL. Cheers and hugs from Ontario, Canada! Great reaction - so glad you enjoyed :)

I LOVE those two movies! In Australia, 'Adventures in Babysitting' was titled 'Night on the Town'. It was the supporting movie at the drive-in, but I can't remember what the main movie was.

I remember seeing this in the theater -- everyone was talking about it and it was a must-see. The 2nd one is good and I also liked the 3rd one.

The place where you commented about the crowd watching haircuts is a real haircutting salon named "Astor Place Hairstylists" when they were very popular and customers were not just watching outside but waiting to get their haircuts. So the scene depicted was "real" at the time. They are still in business at the same location but downsized to the basement.

I just remembered a parody of that famous "That's not a knife" scene from the German comedy movie "Otto der Außerfriesische" (Otto the Extrafrisian) where he gets threatened by gang members with switchblades and then pulls out a Swiss Army knife, folds out the scissors and cuts one of the gangster's suspenders. 😅

Because of this movie when I was a teen, I fell in love with the scenery and the critters. Crocodiles and venomous snakes were my specialty as a zoo keeper/manager/lecturer for decades.

Crocodile hunting was highly illegal in Australia at the time. Their croc populations were very low.

"Goana" down under is a term for many of their monitor lizard species. Related to the Komodo monitor (dragon) they are the largest lizards in the world. Iguanas and their cousins are all found in the Americas, Caribbean, and the islands around them. There are nearly 1000 species of Iguanid, and dozens of species of "goana". The salt water crocodile is one of 2 types of crocs out of 23 species, that are known man eaters. Most alligators and crocodiles are shy timid creatures unless fed by humans. Then accidents start happening when WE bring them closer and closer to us.

It's so funny that you both thought the start of the movie was more of an adventure movie that turned comedy when he went to New York. As an Australian who was a huge fan of Crocodile Dundee, when it first came out back in the 80s, I had the exact opposite impression. The beginning of the film was hilarious as this New York reporter blunders around the Australian outback with the legendary comic genius Paul Hogan then suddenly he gets transported to the megacity of New York on an incredible adventure. Sure, the adventure had heaps of laughs, but all the adventure was in the city, not the outback. I guess it depends on what you're used to.

If i am not mistaken, actor Paul Hogan and the other writers were Oscar nominated for Best Original screenplay. Paul and actress Linda Kozlowski met in this movie and later became a couple. This movie was a huge hit in the 80's. It is so funny also because in the first part of the movie she is the "fish out of water" and then, when they get to the city, he is the "fish out of water".

It is amazing what the passage of time does. I saw this film in cinemas in 1987 and everything seemed normal to me. Nothing shocking and I still see it that way. You, as the next generation, have a completely different approach to many things. Many of the ordinary things of that period shock you. Amazing. Watch part two, I think it's even better than the first one. Have a nice day, guys.

1:00 In Wolf Creek Mick quotes the same thing in a darker sense with a knife stand off with one victim and John Jeriod nails it perfectly BTW In Australia it was 1989 smoking was banned after a father complained his son had Asthma and had an attack on a plane. Nobody helped. Even the staff were smoking BIG NEWS at the time

Have to say, as an Aussie, it is refreshing to see reviewers watch this classic. The story is so simple, no complicated b plots, unless you count who Sue ends up with, and the scenery and music are compliment it perfectly. It shouldn't be any wonder Hogan and Kowalski ended up together, they had great chemistry, though given Hogan was already married at the time one might call it controversial (for the time). I'm glad you enjoyed it, and hope you see the sequel. Oh, and the stuffed crocodile's name was Cyril, not Sheryl.

Have to watch the 2nd movie. After this movie came out, so many Americans came to Australia and in 1987 a US model named Ginger Meadows, inspired by this movie made the journey as well. She was killed by a croc whilst swimming at Kings Cascade Falls on the Prince Regent River. Her body was found/recovered on her 25th birthday.

38:32 My father is similar. And I will say that if you need something having the ability to make friends everywhere is extremely useful. I remember several times that we were able to solve unexpected problems because he made friends very quickly with the people that were there. He was very sociable and knew how to win people over. He used that a lot in his business.
