Just about to start tearing down my ‘77 109 that’s been parked up for 10 years after also taking me around nz for a few years before that. Came across your videos and did double take at the accent. Had finally decided would have chassis thermal arc sprayed now you have me second guessing HDG again. Awesome videos mate!

How did I miss this?!!!! Enjoyed your thorough approach. We have 2 chassis that will simply get epoxy paint. Fuel prices and 2.6l motors mean they won't be regular drivers. Shed stored. Progress continues on the FC and SIII. Yesterday I made a hash of the T seals. Ignoring your advice and trying to use a feeler gauge. FFS. Luckily I have spare Cork seals. That don't fit. FFS. Anyway great to see your chassis done. I look forward to that milestone feeling with mine.

Good to have you back. I think going for a land rover channel is a good idea, even though I love your other videos anyway. I never would have guessed the acid dipping was that expensive. Crazy high cost. Must have been gutting to find rust and other imperfections after the galv. I once had LR rims dipped, but the drips we so insanely thick in all the profiles I had to blowtorch and wire brush them out, forcing me to paint them.

HI geoffrey, I had my sankey trailer chassis dipped 6mm thick and some of it 10mm. When it came back it had egg sized lumps of galv in places and the back was half full of solid galv. They dipped it too quickly and the thick metal chassis sucked the heat out of the galv trying to drip off the chassis. IF YOU TAKE ANYTHING HEAVY GUAGE ASK THEM TO GIVE IT TIME TO HEAT THE METAL THROUGH THOURGHLY BEFORE LIFTING. Worth slipping them a tip for this.Trailer weighed 509kg before galv I guess it will be another15 to 20 kilo now. Looks good though and will never rust in my time. I used T wash (phosphoric acid mixed with copper sulphate) to oxidize and etch the surface to help adhesion. Get it from Dulux deccorator shops. Very expensive sigma cote polyamide cured epoxy still easily chips off. I wish I had used a hexavalent etch primer first and then the epoxy. As if the epoxy chips the etch won't. Raptor cote would have been better and cheaper. Phil

Another reason for drilling holes is that when you are warm galvanizing you are literally dipping the whole chassis in molten zinc, causing any air and moisture trapped in places it can not get out to expand and it will make the chassis part explode. Literally. Boom. Causing molten zinc to fly everywhere. Source: Me. I've seen it happen while working in metal fabrication. Well fabricated 5mm thick parts going "BOOM" is not fun. Next to the zinc baths there is a very sturdy protective booth that the operator will stand in, while dipping.
@neilshep502 жыл бұрын
And also to allow excess zinc to drain out. The galvanizing company doesn't want to return your 300kg chassis full of 5000kg of solid zinc!
