Bluegrass was always a study in improv.... celtic-appalachian, mountain-irish fiddle, etc.
@lottiesdad9 жыл бұрын
+Ws Johnston I don't know about the improv....but bluegrass is a combination of African, Celtic and Native American Music......You have instruments and rhythms of Africa, Mixed w/ instruments vocals and themes from The British Isles and Vocals and themes from Native Americans. Steeped in Southern Appalachian Poverty and the Faith that gets them through.

so THAT's why I always loved it...

lottiesdad Irish music has improv at a very high level - bends, triplets and alternative melody lines. There is also huge rhythmic variation in the military drumming from north east Ulster ( scots-Irish country) - compare Lambeg drumming with the fife and drum in the US.

@@lottiesdad My grandpa was a scotsman, and he used to say the same. Foggy Dew, House Carpenter, The Cruel Mother, Parcel of Rogues, all of them share the same roots.

I've commented similar on here before and been slammed for it, but it does seem strange to me. The rest of the band are so talented and solid, and their studio albums are great, but I don't like O'Donovan's part when it comes to live performances. Spoils it for me, and I generally love their rmusic. The tone of her voice is nice but her rhythm and emphasis is all over the place and it jars with the rhythm of the band as a whole.
