Im a wildland firefighter from canada. While i havent fought fires in cali, most wildfire factors are universal. From what im seeing, this fire is impossible to supress from the ground, and air reaources are minimal in their effect. These wildfires are more comparable to hurricanes or tornados in the amounts of energy they are giving off and so fighting them is about as effective as trying to fight a tornado. The only thing that is going to allow firefighters a chance to stop this is for winds to drop hard and for rain to come. This is going to be a battle until rain comes, and while additional resources will help slow these down, at the end of the day you need the weather to be on your side with this kind of fire activity. Just to be clear, most of California is "water rich" traditionally, in no small part due to the annual snow melt from the Sierras. But as explained, LA does not get its water from this snow pack. BTTW, my son lives in LA, and shared that he recently talked to his in-law, who is a firefighter. He reported that one moderate contributor is that given the fire produced by winds, pyromaniacs are more active in the context of such strong wind born fire. This is just to point out that the fires are multicausal, and all fire sources are multiplied under conditions of the winds.

Making sure as much water as possible would be stored and on hand, including all reservoirs 6. Using the money allocated to build water retention facilities by taxpayers on actually building them 7. Knowing that the winds are coming... PRESPRAYING all homes Without so much dry dead tinder laying everywhere, and with prespraying, yes, a lot of damage could have been avoided. Not all, but some. There was an elderly homeowner who ignored evac orders, and stayed to continuously spray his house and the 2 house on either side of him. They are the only 3 houses in his neighborhood that are still standing. He saved them with only his waterhose. Prespraying does prevent fire. He stayed up for a whole day to save the house his parents built, and the home he lived in his entire life. It's very inspiring.

I live in a town on the NSW South coast which was devastated by the bushfires. Our house was fine, but there were many that were wiped out. There are still people in my town still with ptsd from the terror (lots are elderly). So sad. Trump is disgusting. These fires are out of control due to wind and dry weather and they are terrifying and extremely hard to control….

As a historian, I sit back and shake my head all day. Americans - and a great many immigrants - actually look at people of great wealth as aspiration for themselves (sadly, even terrible people like Musk and Trump). But what I do not think they understand is that democracy and Rule of Law - when fair - is the system that allows wealth to be created in the first place. That is never messaged. The trick is doing it in a way that does not make Democrats look like they are against wealth, but FOR a fairer system. I come from an immigrant family, and this is what they think: Trump is for the economy (ie, making money, that is what they mean by economy), Democrats are against it. Literally a family member told me that. I explain the reality over and over, but the Right’s branding has really worked. It’s such BS and I’m not sure I see anything that is counteracting it. Interestingly, that same family member LOVES AOC, so the fact that she is not out front for the party is mind-boggling and increasingly frustrating. The Left needs a grassroots push to demand a big democracy and reform agenda. Use the Tea Party tactics - grab the narrative for the next few years, make a ton of noise to get attention and get back to the Party’s roots. If Dem leadership won’t do it, Dem Party base can, and should. Then they will have to pay attention. That is what people want to see: Democrats fighting for the people that put them in office. That is the way to win back loyalty.

I'm really surprised that there's no official disaster warning app. Germany is not exactly known for being overly digital but we do have publicly funded apps that give warnings for all kind disasters or even just really bad weather. Privately owned media or platforms shouldn't be the only way to warn and inform people.

And Cali has been bragging about the Klamath river restoration to save the fish that demolished multiple dams previously use to store water. So turns out not to be all that much disinformation.

Happened to me twice living in Colorado. These kinds of wildfires are so hot and the air pollution is so intense that it's as if a volcano has erupted nearby. That system mainly takes the snow melt from up here in the far north above the Oroville Dam to the southern San Joaquin Valley, where I lived before moving here.
