@@juliatrotti , thanks for the comparison! I'm planning to keep my crop sensor camera for a while and I don't know if I should keep my 56mm f1.4 or replace it for an 85mm same aperture. Just basically trying to get more shallow depth of field on full body shots so I'm one click away from buying a lens 85mm but before that, I'm looking forward to seeing a "crop sensor camera sporting a 50(something)mm vs an 85mm (f1.4 would be awesome but f1.8 is good enough)", the same way YOU do, big please, dear Julia. PS: you'll be saving to many of us the restocking fee from buying the 85mm or even renting just to test 🙏🏽

No huge differences between high end APSC vs FullFrame nowadays.... APSC is more than enough for most normal consumers, no doubt to pick the FF for more professional work. Again, great works!

I shoot with both Full Frame & APSC for more versatility!. Think about it If I have 2 lenses say a 35mm & 85mm shooting both means I have a 35mm, 56mm, 85mm & 135mm field of view options!. The 56mm & 135mm options become F2 equivalents but hey F2 is more than enough!.

I ended up buying the SL2 for that reason. If I'm gonna go with an ASPC sensor, may as well get the smallest body available for portability and ease of use. It's so good. Eventually I'll get a full frame but for now I'm learning all I can with this camera.

bagery I have heard the claimed specks but I don’t believe they will push it that far ahead. My guess for the 90D is 26-30mp & 8-10FPS when Megapixels gets too high like 5DS/R, diffraction starts creeping in (F8) & this makes images soft when more Depth of Field is required!.

Thank you! The differences I wanted to show in this video is that while you can capture a beautiful or pretty much similar looking photo to full frame, I did struggle with focusing a bit more on the 7D so for me personally it would be a fine camera to use for portrait photography but maybe not so much a wedding since you often only have one chance to take a shot compared to portrait shoots where you can take your time or redo things! Just a small point, but important none the less :) There are also a few minor differences in low light sensitivity and dynamic range which I didn't get the chance to cover in this video, perhaps a different one. And I agree Mahalia was a dream to shoot with!

If you shoot outside? Yeah, pretty much true. Everything changes if you want to shoot in small bedroom for example and don't have space to have similar framing with the same lens on crop camera. Also the wide angle depth of field is the main difference. For example there is no way to get the same amount of bokeh on crop that you get with 24mm F/1.4. It's actually one of the main reasons I switched to ff from m4/3. There are limits to how wide you can go with crop :p
@onegrapefruitlover
@onegrapefruitlover 3 жыл бұрын
@@Eihei Yes! I agree 100% With crop sensors you need to either back up a bit or use wider lenses, both of which cause a less shallow depth of field. If super shallow depth of field is what you want in your images, bigger sensors make a lot more sense. For me it really doesn't make a big difference so I'm sticking with aps-c.

I like Julia’s videos, there are a lot of valid points. Just came to say to her to hold the camera correctly - supported underneath the lens - the correct support is from the below, just like a tripod. Elbows are tacked in to eliminate the camera shake. Finger is on the shutter, squeezing it, not pushing it each time. I hope it helps and doesn’t go down as a bad attitude... 🙂

A fantastic and very educational comparison video! As a 7D II user I particularly enjoyed seeing it being used for portraits. :) Regarding the AF issues with back-lit scenes: The 7D Mark II AF seems to be optimized more towards longer lenses like they are used in sports and wildlife photography. Indoor sports scenes wouldn't have much back lighting in particular, so there's that as well. I'm mostly using the old 400mm f/5.6L lens myself, which works good with this camera despite not being a fast lens. However, when using a single AF point, the camera does tend to struggle. Where the 7D II really shines is when multiple AF points are used to track fast-moving subjects; the center AF point is also supposedly capable of getting more accurate results when used with lenses of f/2.8 or faster (though I haven't used it much in that capacity, and not with high-end lenses either). In an case, I think your comparison shows that the difference between FF and crop isn't necessarily huge and that using an APS-C over a full frame may even produce favorable results in some cases. Thanks a lot for this video and keep up the great work!

I quite enjoyed this video. As an APS-C Sony shooter, I love seeing how these smaller sensors stack up against the larger sensors. I chose the APS-C because I wanted a smaller body and lens capability when traveling (a6500 for me). You did a great job showing how capable the smaller sensor is and the challenges faced as well. I believe that in many cases the APS-C was my fav in these comparisons because of the lack of distortion relative to the FF. Obviously, if you had used a 50mm with the FF, it might have been harder for me to say that because I believe that combo on the Canon would've given the FF a slight advantage.

Instead of being nervous about which lens to buy, why not buy the versatile 24-70mm lens and get it over with? That lens covers both your wide angle and telephoto need. By the way, great video as usual, Julia.

That was very helpful! I had a confusion if the crop sensor with a 24mm would have the distortion and the background/foreground difference of a 24mm in full frame equivalence but you proved me wrong, it indeed has the same or very similar distortion and the background/foreground difference as that of a 35mm in full frame equivalence. Of course the bokeh is affected but personally that doesn't matter a lot to me. Thank you for this!

FL is not causing distortion (only wide lenses with not complete corrections are distorting image). Distortion is caused by working (focusing) distance, which you did not mention any single time. I've got distorted face even with 200mm using it from 1.8m (MFD of the lens).
@raegorz
@raegorz 5 жыл бұрын
In my experience, I've noticed significant distortion with lenses under the 40mm mark on a cropped sensor. Anything higher and it's pretty much non existent. I use a 55 - 250mm on my 200D and I don't see any distortion out of it. However, I throw on my 28mm and I see it sometimes, especially with architecture photography. Even on a crop sensor camera where the 28mm acts more like a 45mm...I can still see it.
@PavelR2
@PavelR2 5 жыл бұрын
@@raegorz You are mixing two sources of distortion: perspective distortion caused by working (focusing) distance and not corrected lens distortion which produce not straight lines at the edges. There are several wide angle lenses distortion free like Laowa 15mm f/2. But portrait photographers need to pay attantion mainly to perspective distortion, which produce uneven proportions of face/body parts. The portrait photographers do not usually use not corrected wide angle lenses. But perspective distortion is caused by working distance not by FL. If you shoot from close distance you get distorted face regardless of used FL and regardless of sensor size.

I think that nowadays the biggest advantage of the full frame compared to aps-c is in low light situations, the higher the iso, bigger is the noise difference between the two cameras

Wouldn't the depth of focus be more equivalent with the 1.4 on the crop sensor and 2.0 on the full frame? I know you mentioned leaving those settings on your first shot being an accident, but I wonder if keeping those equivalent apertures would have actually made the images/bokeh more similar in appearance.

firstly ..stunning model & styling.. I used to shoot (APS-C Sony a6500) & my go to lenses were a 30mm & 50mm & had a 19mm for wide shots for my portrait & model work .. pretty much identical focal lengths allowing for the 1.5 crop that I use now on my fullframe camera.. I much prefer the low light perfomance & better bokeh on my fullframe camera but I happily still do use my apsc camera still & still get good results

cropped frame edges on every photo look kinda blown out? is it because of the editing? did you vignette on full frame photos?
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't add any lens correction or remove/add any vignetting, this is just what you see from a crop vs full frame. Since you have a smaller field of view on crop, it removes any vignetting and lens distortion as the body is technically cropping the image for you. In full frame, you can see right up to the edges of the frame, which is why there is more distortion and vignetting :)

Yay, happy days, the return of the MK1! I shoot with the 7DII and 5DIII. I think Dan knows the greatest benefit as an everyday camera the crop sensor has, and that’s the ability to use a certain Sigma lens. For me as a wildlife photographer it’s the perfect camera, 10fps is plenty for me as I usually shoot in bursts of 3. Then the crop sensor itself effectively gives me 960mm. I’m also safe to drop it...a lot...a very lot! I mainly shoot with Sigma on the 7DII which have been on the hub. The problem is with all lenses they need to be calibrated and if someone has calibrated the body for a different Canon 35mm lens than yours it will pick up that lens when you put yours on it. That could be part of the reason for the missed focus. My full frame is the 5DIII which I mainly use for landscapes or low light wildlife. I’ll be honest, compared to the 5DII I find the 5DIII very disappointing and is the reason I’ve not upgraded again the the 5DIV. It also played a big part in my return to film. There is without doubt a totally different look to full frame cameras. That’s not always a good or bad thing, but just a thing. For portraits isn’t 80D the best cropped option from Canon? I have never shot it but I’ve heard very good things. I’m looking forward to the 7DIII or 90D or whatever their new cropped sensor camera is finally called. They are talking big figures for the wildlife/sports photographers and it could possibly be my last digital camera. As always an excellent video, really enjoyed it.

I didn't realise how much I missed the 35 mk1 until I used it again this day, even though it's not as sharp as the mk2, there's just something special about the images it produces! I'd love to try some Sigma lenses on the 7DII next time, would be fun to get to try some zooms :D And I agree, I only upgraded to the 5D4 because the double card buffer was pretty bad on the 3 for weddings and I would constantly find myself waiting for cards to write when I would shoot something in burst like confetti walking back up the isle, champagne pops and things like that! Aside from the buffer, the 4 is pretty similar to the 3 =\ I should probably refrain from saying "better" or best camera as it's a relative subject to the type of photography you do. For me, even though the 80d is newer, the 7D has features that are more important to me as a portrait and wedding photographer that the 80d doesn't have, which is why I made that point. I'll be sure to word in better in the future! Thank you as always for your insightful comment!

Great video. I also miss the greater focus coverage on crop. However, the 24-70 look and versatility on full frame is unmatched for me. Not a big deal when relying on primes primarily, though.
@NickL0VIN
@NickL0VIN 4 жыл бұрын
Finally someone mentioned this. This is the #1 reason i went to FF. There is no equivalent 24-70 f2.8 (which would be a 16-47mm f1.8) on APSC). Like you said, for primes that is much easier to match from FF to apsc, but with zooms there isn't.
