Crosby Stills & Nash perform Graham's Lady Of The Island at the Royal Albert Hall, London Friday 11th October 2013. For the second set they played the whole of their debut album (known as the Couch album to fans) and this is one of those.

Crosby's background vocals on this song are a minor masterpiece. Always have been. I love Stills and Nash, I revere Crosby.

Of course this live version is good, but the original recorded version is a masterpiece of harmony and pitch. This version certainly has feel and acceptable vocals. But it's clear that Nash in his mid 70's here is at the edge of his vocal range, even from the beginning of the song - and the tuning has been turned down at least one level in this live version. Crosby's vocals are much easier to sing since he is taking the lower harmony. Also, the song is slower (even slower than the original recorded version), which seems to drag the song down at places. These guys are legends. But reluctantly, their ability to recreate their stuff from 50 years ago is no longer possible. Thank god for master tapes and digital technology to allow us to experience the greatness of these songs in their original forms...
