I attended this concert, standing right up front. I think from a lot of the comments that people don’t realize this wasn’t a CSN concert, it was a Stephen Stills/Manassas concert. Crosby and Nash showed up as surprise guests and did a whole set with Stills sitting in on acoustic guitar (he had been playing electric in the previous set). It was a hug thrill to get to hear the three of them in that intimate venue, as a surprise act. I doubt the three of them had done much if any rehearsals, whereas Crosby and Nash had been playing together often. So I don’t think it’s fair to criticize Stills as being an interloper or not playing at the same level. It was actually in some way a jam. But it apparently inspired them to tour together again that summer with Young, and I was able to attend their show at the Oakland Stadium as well.

Oh my goodness, who would ever think to criticize Stephen's guitar work. It was incredible, beautiful, feisty. Looked to me David was thrilled, holding back laughter... digging Stephen doing his thing...yes jamming.... letting this song just develop, happen in real time. I love this version. They all looked so very happy. 🕊️🌱

Even at his most stoned, Crosby could hear the harmonies come together and he'd signal to the audience to calm down a little and actually hear them. He did similar moves throughout their time together -- no need to whoop, just listen.

They look like they are having the best damn time. David's mischief grin is contagious, Graham trying to keep the two of them together, Steven goes off on a jam all his own...and they all laugh, letting this most beautiful song... just happen. Damn, so much joy up there.🌷

To read the critical comments here, you would have thought Stills hijacked THEIR show, instead of the other way around. Although they put on quite a show - for 55 minutes - it had to be agony for Stills seeing his Manassas debut upstaged like that while his band waited and waited AND WAITED backstage. It was a passive aggressive move on someone's part - GN, NY, Atlantic Records... I don't attribute ill-will to DC. But as good as it was for the audience, it was a lousy thing to do to a bandmate or friend. Sometimes, between this, the Carson Show and the Eat A Peach and the Denver 1969 incidents, II don't know how Stills ever really trusted them again. It's great for us to have footage 50 years later, but if you look at it... you're watching someone react real-time to an unfolding nightmare. The truth is that this looked like a reunion and raised the expectation that it would occur at EVERY Manassas show for the rest of the tour - which it did not and was never intended to be. We loved Stills, loved Manassas and had tickets to the Denver show. It was great, but my husband and about 90% of the audience EXPECTED CSN&Y because of Winterland and booed when they didn't come out. Think about it...

Two years earlier, Crosby showed up at Stephen's show at Berkeley Community Theater and they played this song as a duo - something they had never done before. I snuck a recorder in and taped the whole show and this tune is way better than it is here. Yes, Stephen did his thing on lead guitar but it was way more tasteful and restrained. They also sang You Don't Have To Cry and nailed that too. I really miss seeing these guys during that period because you never knew who was going to show up on any one of their solo or duo shows. Can't believe I missed this one, but I saw a bunch of other ones. Gotta go dig that tape up!

I’m a fan of Stills, but he just happens to be one of those “busy” guitar players where less would’ve been more here. Nash’s accompaniment on vox and guitar on the BBC was far better. Would’ve simply preferred Stills harmonies adding to the song instead of his mariachis odyssey type playing lol.

I get what you are saying but this was a one off performance. Lee Shore is normally performed by just Crosby and Nash. Stills usually goes back stage and let's them get on with it. I'm a massive Stills fan over the other two but you're right and no need for Stills input on this particular song. I can't find any other footage of him playing on this song. Therefore no need to label him as 'busy'.

A lot of people bashing Stills here. This isn't a jam session , it's a concert. They rehearse these songs beforehand and decide how they will perform them and which person will do what. You'll notice the tempo is also a little faster than the BBC performance. Many performers do songs differently in live concerts. I agree that he is a little too loud though.
@melissa93756 ай бұрын
This was not a concert for the 3 of them. It was a Stills concert that they dropped in on to jam. The audience loved seeing the THREE of them together. It would have been bizarre if he left his own stage. They were jamming.

Louis Collings He’s dispensable on this song, but not as a rule. I agree that he is overplaying here big-time though. Doesn’t match the mood of the song.. it’s too manic. The live BBC version with just Crosby and Nash is spectacular! Crosby has one of the most unusually beautiful voices and it would serve everybody better to just get out of the way and listen when he’s engaged in such. Nash wisely enhances but lets Dave lead. His voice is richer than the rest. Tenor, but not at all thin; with absolutely gorgeous vibrato! He’s really an underrated singer, in my opinion.
