He actually was not an egomaniac at all that was part of the problem, if he was it may have turned out differently Stills was the maniacal one and he and Neil clashed a lot while the rest of them were mostly content to follow. Despite all that Neil and Stephen were very close at times.

Too simple an explanation to a much more complex situation IMO. They've all demonstrated their ability to be competitive, controlling, egoistic assholes at times, with Nash being the possible exception. But from strong wills can come extraordinary creations, and what they actually produced might not have been as great as it actually turned out had they all been just nice guys all the time. Later, Young wrote a lyric line that migh apply: "It's better to burn out, than to fade away".

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of Crosby having anything to do with Ohio before it was written. Getting a studio fast, yes, but that was after Neil wrote the song.
