The number one best thing you can do for a diesel - any diesel - is a good transfer pump. Look into getting a FASS unit. A little spendy, but totally worth it. It'll eliminate the vast majority of start-ability / bad running problems. You don't know me from anyone, so if you want to check with someone you know, check with Steve Darnell. I think he's put them on all of his rigs.
@otm6463 жыл бұрын
FASS did an excellent job at marketing and selling people a product they don't need. There is nothing wrong with the factory fuel system in this truck, or any of the trucks they make systems for. You don't need a $600 in line pump, there are plenty of less expensive OE style solutions. With a highly modified engine that's a different story but that's not where most of those pumps are installed.

That transmission fill shot reminded me that I did the same on my medium truck and it wasn't on a perfectly level surface. I was climbing the hill on I-8 out of San Diego to start the cross country trip, engine screaming up the hill at 30 mph and the transmission started to puke fluid onto the exhaust. Thought something was seriously wrong and had a mini heart attack in the process. Realized I overfilled the trans. Stopped smoking after about 10-15 miles of that. Made it the rest of the way no problem except needed to change the fuel filter a couple times (newer fuels knocked all the varnish from the old fuel into the filter). Only thing it needs is ham radio system in it with a Texas Star 667 with a fan kit installed in it, I would use a Stryker, 955 or a RCI 2970N4 to run a straight 6-8 pill amplifier. With a Mr.Coily antennas on the mirrors. Then that thing would talk coast to coast when conditions were in. I would keep that master switch for the battery connection so if in a wreck should happen on the battery side you can have a quick disconnect so it will not burn to the ground. Still need to find the leak and seal it up boys. Adjusting brakes is one of the first things to teach a driver so he doesn't die on a big hill with a heavy load and how to come off the hill without burning the truck down as well with a brake fire or seal meting out of the axel. I would say if no jake brakes on the Cat get some and the brakes will last 100% longer as well and less adjusting them as well. I hop you checked the SWRs on that radio and antenna set up after removing the coax and antenna off the other mirror.

@@chris6200 The old class 7s are pretty much all this large. GM used to make class 7 and 8 trucks that were very simular to the Kodiak/TopKick and those were the Bruin/Brigadier. These trucks could even be spec as a tandem axle which would raise the gvrw but not enough to classify as a class 8. Looked it up Davey Allison is or was the crew chief on a drag car sponsored by California car duster/cover

Also looked davey Allison up. He died in 93. But the thing was from 96? Am I missing something?

Davey left the track for good in 93 fellas. Wish I still had that signed poster from 91. Wrong Davey, still a bad ass rig. Likely a usac sprint hauler... Springfield and Pennsylvania make sense, I remember mid to late 90s.... those rigs were proper haulers for a well funded team. Id try to check its provenance... not that it matters, but hey...

The problem with that trucks ride is you cant put enough in the back to load it heavy enough to ride good.

I think it’s because waffle house’s hq is right outside Atlanta in norcross ga. My old company’s office was literally right down the road from them and I had no idea till I left 😂

Listening to the tinny sounds those doors make when just unlocking it, that truck is crying out for some Dynamat to reduce the noise on the highway.

I never noticed until this video that the truck looks like its basically a squarebody cab on a truck chassis. Very cool - gotta hand it to chev getting the max use out of the panel die's

I have a customer that went and had his Gen3 Hemi built by another shop and he ran too much boost with too short of a rod and a cylinder wall collapsed, 6 shattered rods, 2 bent rods, 3 holes, a bent crank, and two pistons deformed into an egg shape. The carnage was impressive.

If your gonna keep big red around for awhile, I'd look at swapping the rear suspension over to air ride. It'll soften the ride, and let you squat the back to help get cars in and out.

Wait Aaron reeves (flying sparks garage) workd on that in 2003, that's kinda cool.

I had to laugh a bit when I heard there was a 3208 Cat in that truck. I worked on a few of those when I was younger. They are not Caterpillar's finest engine. Reading some of the comments about air ride on the cab, that's not that hard to do. There are kits out there, but basically just take the two rear cab mounts and replace them with air bags, shocks and a stabilizer bar. Loved the video.

When you said it has a 3208 cat , as a retired diesel truck mechanic for Ryder truck you need to have somebody drop the pan and replaced rods and mains .I replaced a lot of them because kicked rods just to let you know and use shell rotella oil has zinc in it .
