XC races are 1,000,000x harder than people think. It's not just running. It's a battle between yourself and your mind, your teammates, and the other runners. I don't know a harder sport

Chicken Of the Cave preach it man. I'm going to SteepleChase in Nashville, Tn this Saturday to break our school record for a 5K in cross country. I'm a junior and I've never ran there before. I've heard it's pretty hilly. Our school record is 18:03 and my time is 18:46. Everytime I end a race I feel like I still have energy left even though im hurting. I know I'm physically capable of it, I just have to get past the mental part and that's the hardest part of all. It would really help if I had some motivation or some tips before Saturday. I'm really really nervous but also excited. I will have adrenaline going through me more then usually and I'm wearing my track shoes because I heard they're way lighter than normal shoes and help out some on time. Like I said, I just have to get past the mental part and push through the pain.

I think this would be the best sport for depressed people because when I would run (I’m not depressed) I felt free and had no cares and since it’s a solo sport you don’t have to talk or be with people and even the “good jobs” motivate you to keep going

I'm extremely weak, one of those XC runners everyone sees at the back of every race and no one really cares about on the team. Started my season with a crappy time of 32 min 40 sec 3 mile. I trained like hell because I never wanted to be last again, it was the most humiliating thing ever. I learned to accept my position and take strength from it, so I kept running and running. My first race I ran 27 mins 38 seconds. I kept working at it. My next couple of races were all around 26, with one 3 mile run at 25:16. Last week I ran a 25:40 for my 5k, and today, my last race of the XC season, I ran a 24:29--I was running with my team mates, and I was actually good enough to start passing people during the race and push like hell. I had 0 strength, I couldn't run up a hill at the start, now I can actually jog up. 24:29 is still considered a terrible time. But hey, am I last? No. Do I try my best? Yeah. In XC there's no such thing as talented and gifted runners, only those who give it their all and those who don't. Many people go really slow and instantly give up claiming, "this isn't for me". Take it from a person who dropped nearly 10 minutes in one season (ok ik being trash means more room for improvement, I get lots of criticism for saying this lmao), you can do it if you WANT to. Before next season I want to be going 20 flat or below. It's what you do on off-season that really counts, as many people slack then.

Keep pushing brother 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽 I was 10th last in my first home invite. embarrassing. I worked and trained hard in a month I kept a consistency of 20th or 23rd place. I’m working towards top 10. My XC season just started and I feel amazing to be where I am due to my summer grind compared to last year eating my feeling away. We can do it and good luck!!!

I completely forgot about this comment haha, I can't believe I was running a 24:29 minute 5k 4 years ago...I'm 2 years into college now but quit after freshman year. I managed to hit a 16:03 minute 5k, unfortunately stopped before going sub 16 but I'm happy where I got haha. I've started weight training now instead and hope to bulk up! Good luck with your journey and I hope you achieve what you want! :)

I don’t know what I wouldn’t have done if my dad didn’t force me to start. When I first learned about xc, my dad made me try it. I kept telling him no but I tried it anyways because he made me. Next thing I know, a few weeks later I absolutely love running and win almost all of my meets. My team? My team is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. My team is like my family, they mean EVERYTHING to me. They’ve pushed me, they’ve been there for me, and I’ve been there for them. I know their strengths and weaknesses and they know mine. Overall point, I love xc and track so much and I would never stop doing it.

My goal is very simple:run in college. I haven’t always worked the hardest but this year I’m turning it on. This year I’m gonna train harder than ever before. This season the season got ended early due to corona. My PR was 19:49 for the 5k. Next year I’m going to smash that PR. I believe in myself and this will help me motivate myself to do just that

Its really interesting when people say there are harder sports, or how cross country is easy, but if its easy, then you aren't going hard enough. If you play football, and your alabama, your the best, then its easy, but even if you win every cross country race, and your the best in the country, the world, even then you can beat records, in basketball, when they set records they played different teams and had different challenges, but when you run and your the best, then you can race the people of the past, all of the legends, all of the records, you can beat them. And even if that is still easy, then you can race the future runners, the ones who will strive to break those records, no matter what, you can push harder and do better, push yourself to the human limit. There will never be "the goal" because you can always go faster. Thats what makes it the hardest, you will never be the best, you will never "win" so you can't say anything is harder when in every other sport, you can get the max score like in bowling, or the super bowl in football, the world cup in baseball, there will always be a "win". But not for running, thats what makes it the hardest, thats what makes people hate it, thats what makes runners love it.

Cross country is a very dificult sport thata both mentally and phisicly demanding however... I used to wrestle when I was younger (elementary) but I didnt remember enything so I wanted to get back into it and I'm telling you cc babys you compared to wrestling so much so that I had a couple of mental breakdowns. I ended up quiting because I never got into it as much as the other guys. I REALLY regret my didsion I should of just pushed through the pain. I really miss wrestling but im to embaressed to set foot in that room ever again. Wrestling is way harder that cc and I have ran for 6 years (since 5th grade) and ive only wrestled 2 (once was in middle school way easyer cant compare to high school wrestling at all) (sorry I suck at spelling lol)

When I was 13 I ran my first 5K race with my mom with a goal of under 30 mins. Instead I ran 27:34, which was really eye opening. I ran my second 5K race the next year on the same day, still with no training. I ran it in 22:26, surpassing my goal of sub 25 mins, and finished 17th out of ~3000. It was the Mother’s Day race so it wasn’t as competitive but that day still stands as the day I proved to myself it was possible. Keep working towards all of your goals, even if they seem unachievable. All it takes is a little change in mindset.
