@projudo if you are stepping in with the right leg why do you take an extra step? Why not simply use the left leg as the kicking leg? It seems more efficient to me.

Hi Anil, 1st it isn't me doing the demo, this is Sensei Ivica. But I think I understand the power improvement in taking many smaller steps over fewer stronger action steps. Simply the power reduction advantage of action is considerable, early in the technique. larger steps require more power to get the same result than fewer smaller steps can achieve. I term it "activation energy" being the investment of your throwing effort in kuzushi for the technique, to get the other person into kuzushi. Because of the nature of kuzushi, once the movement in kuzushi is achieved, less energy is required to maintain momentum. The drop and roll of sacrifice technique uses easy power. To my thinking it is all about getting compliance in the early stage of the technique and the opponent in order to avoid being thrown will overtly resist and circumvent the throwers efforts. More and quicker steps are harder to counter than fewer larger steps. I know this answer is long but the physics is apparent once you try to throw much heavier and powerful opponents.

@@JudoLife Thank you for your reply - it is an honor to me that you would reply to a newbie's question. I understand you are saying that more and smaller steps help with the kuzushi so that with heavier opponents, they will already be unbalanced. I will keep the principle in mind for other techniques too. By the way, just saw this morning's competition in Tel Aviv GP 2019 -78 Kg womens gold medal final Apotekar used sumi gaeshi. not clear if she used several small steps here, or just one kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqi4lGybnpZriMk But she appears to have gone over the 'wrong' shoulder :) as you said in your video - right leg, left shoulder.

Anil Philip In this case right leg right shoulder was fine. It was not a cross grip. It looked a bit awkward but won the day... @@PilgrimsProgress7
