Now it's time to learn how to do the Back Stitch. Sometimes it may appear to be a daunting task (depending on how large the piece is) but back stitching really isn't anything to be afraid of! The French Knot, however, is a completely different story ;)
Check out my Etsy shop for other patterns I have created, as well as the occasional cross stitch I may also post for sale! www.etsy.com/s...

There is something to be said for a man teaching cross stitch - Phil is great, he doesn't miss a step, and I love that he uses a method of using both sides of the fabric, which is much easier for newbies and children than feeling for the holes blindly from the back. Bravo!

Thanks. It's definitely a lot easier and quicker for me to flip the piece I'm working rather than hope I get the needle in the correct hole.

Yes! I learned how to do cross-stitch about 35 years ago, and loved it...haven’t picked up a CS needle in approx. 30 years (college/jobs/relationships/homeownership, etc. tend to urge varying priorities, lol😊). Recent so-called quarantine, and the like - has finally brought me back, and boy, did I need a refresher!! These have helped so much more than my old instruction books and other YT video tutorials. LOVE how he says, “blah, blah, blah” about the “directions” provided😁🤣🤣❤️ Look forward to more videos, when available!🙏🏼🙏🏼

I’m living in China and wanted to get into cross stitching to help me wind down from a pretty tedious job. Your videos were the most helpful on getting me started! You answered a lot of very basic questions (e.i. One usually uses two strands when cross stitching) that the other tutorials I found just skipped over, when someone who’s never done embroidery wouldn’t necessarily know the answer. I’m now working on a huge Harry Potter themed piece! And I found that when it comes to back stitching I prefer to do the lines square by square, otherwise if a line is 3-4 squares long the thread tends to loosen after a while and it doesn’t look as neat. Anyway, many thanks to you for your super helpful tutorial!

I'm currently looking into starting cross stitching for no apparent reason and these videos have lessened the fear of centering a counted cross stitch. Thank you for putting them out! From one craftsperson to another, though, I will tell you that it's easier to thread a needle if you make a mini loop with an odd number of strands (fold the floss over the needle) and push that through, which is what I've been doing (and it works great!). This series is super informative, thanks again for teaching us.

Friend of mine shanghaied me into a project when I've never cross-stitched before, the project person sent me a huge empty canvas 244x243 and I had to come up with my own design. I felt overwhelmed and yet still full of purpose and ambition, and just hopped in without any knowledge. I'm glad I decided to check out Phil, he's got a bit of a Bob Ross vibe, and I feel real positivity in his vids. I will come back for when I inevitably need a refresher.

I feel like you could still secure the thread the same way as you did for the cross stitching. Just with the end of it instead of finding the middle first. You don't need to fold over the entire thread to create a loop to feed through the needle. Then the very end would be "double" and secured but in a way that you could even take the thread out of the needle again without having to cut it. Doing it this way for the main part would not be useful as you'd need to use two threads to create the loop at the end and that would create bulk but if you're working with a single strand it should be fine. (P.S. right after writing this I tried it out with yarn and a darning needle because I realized that this is THE perfect way to secure the yarn to add details without having to worry about loosing the thread. Literally said "Aha!" Out loud and startled my boyfriend lol... But yeah, works. Dunno if I really wanna start cross stitching but I'm definitely gonna keep that)

You could do the same loop trick with the thread (it would waste some, of course) to keep the needle from falling off the thread with a single strand too! Once it's on, you can shorten the end. I just posted on fb about that technique. I think it's brilliant!

Hi! Would you please 🙏🏼 post some comments about how to do a loop start with *three* strands? Super easy with even numbers (two/four, depending in gauge of the fabric). The project I’m starting will be a very special gift for a certain someone...I could use two strands, but the pattern suggests three, for bolder presentation, which is preferred😊. I also have a stash of other patterns I’d like to use that prescribe three strands, which I would be more inclined to start projects with if I could get rid of that pesky “floss dropping out of the needle” thing. 🤭 I’ve searched, but haven’t yet found a “suitable” demonstration of how to do it with an uneven number of strands, and your video instructions are the BEST!!😁❤️ All comments/tips welcome! Please🙏🏼help!
@PhilsNextKick

Like you said, the loop method for threading your needle unfortunately can only be used if you need an even number of strands. If I need 3 strands, or 1 strand for back stitching, i still have to thread it the normal way.

i’m a young aussie guy who’s about do a cross stitch ornament for the first time. even a couple years on this mini series has been really helpful so thanks! also, when finishing up your cross-stitching from earlier videos, did you end by putting the ends of the threads under what you’d already stitched? like how you did for your backstitching? sorry if that’s a little confusing, i’m just unsure because you tended to skip that part of the cross-stitch where you’d get to the end of your thread. cheers
