I found this saw a few years ago at the Deseret Industries thrift store for $20. I have a scout Klondike camp this weekend I want to use it at so I thought it was time for a restoration.
I by no means have all the tools and skill to do fine tuned and professional restoration of this saw but I did enjoy learning.
I hope you all enjoy watching.

I have almost exactly the same saw and it was handed down in my family. I would love to restore it so your video gives me hope!

The bicycle stuff is neat, but I really like these old tool restorations.

I like to buy those cheap ketchup/mustard bottles to put my linseed oil in. Works great and lets you apply in tight spots as well. Keep up the resto’s.

Enjoyed the video...GREAT JOB!! I've got a larger version of the same saw hanging in my garage as a conversation piece/reminder of how tough our forefathers were :) Don't know of a better way to set the bevel/edge of the teeth/scoops than with fine files like you did. It sounds like it's gonna be put to regular use, and i'd bet our forefathers constantly kept the bevels clean via routine sharpening with hand files. You're teaching the youth founational principles for life...effort/ good work ethics/value of teamwork, etc. You're a pillar of society :)

I know right! Someone should do that... I actually did get a chance to use it that weekend with scouts but did not get any footage. I had my cell phone but with the cold (-15 that night) the battery was acting up and I got busy... all just excuses really.

Boy it's nice to see restoration videos that aren't just "Watch me angle-grinder the hell out of this crappy old axe-head and then stick a handle on it." The oiled wire brush technique is far more interesting to watch, and gives a much more interesting finished look.

You must be an incredibly popular scout leader! I have absolutely no idea if you sharpened the saw right, although it looked like you did a great job. However, I do know you are treating those young people the right way, ie giving them responsibility and new experiences. And isn’t that the entire point of the scouting movement? Well done!

It’s a fun one. I have some trail maintenance planned for this spring at some scout camps and I look forward to putting it to use. I hope my chainsaw doesn’t get jealous.

Really enjoyed this, I didn't realise how thick the blade was until you started to sharpen the teeth. One little suggestion I will make is, and this is just my opinion, a little bit more lighting would be much better. Watching this on my smartphone in the daytime and it seemed quite dark at times. 😁

Cool ol saw share some video of the saw in action plz. One question about Evapo-Rust when you use it, afterward when saving the Evapo-Rust do you run it through a strainer to get all the junk out? I see a lot of makers and restorers use product and was wonder what your thoughts are on it. Awesome video keep it up.

Great to see old cross cuts being brought back to life rather than becoming wall art. For those that work in wilderness areas crosscut saws are still practical. Also great when you don’t want to pack the weight of a chainsaw just to buck the occasional log off the trail. As you mentioned you didn’t have the proper tools, still a few of the things you did made me cringe a bit. Here is a link to the Forest Service Crosscut Saw Manual. www.fs.fed.us/eng/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf77712508/pdf77712508dpi72.pdf I suspect this was once a two person saw that got broke, then made into a one person saw.

I do think this was a bigger saw once. And yes there are likely several things still need to learn to be the best at this but I do appreciate the help. I hope to get some more like it.

Do you ever stand blast items? So many different medias to blast with and you could get different textures on the items you restore. I like what you do.

The way the guard was when I got the saw (rusty and unrestored) was upside down. Once I had cleaned it up I set it up correctly. Thanks for watching so attentively and for the comment.

This made me laugh that your interested but I do like the jacket. It is a JC Penny’s “the INN Shop” nothing collectible but I disgust by some Pendleton wool scraps to do a restoration on the jacket, replacing the fake fur with wool. Thanks for watching.
