Probably the best way to think about Crossed Swords is a medieval, fantasy-themed Punch-Out, only much harder. As the tutorial explains, the key to success is reading enemies attacks and guarding high and low correctly to deflect the blow, then counterattacking, although discerning exactly which attack the enemy is preparing to launch in such a short time frame is is incredibly difficult.
I loved the visuals and the overall concept, but I was far less enamoured with the gameplay itself: too long; too repetitive; too boring.

This game came out before Mortal Kombat, so it's likely the explosions were a stand in for what would have otherwise been blood splatters.

It’s nice looking, but also looks incredibly repetitive and shallow. It was an early neo-geo game so that’s kind of par for the course. Once Neo-Geo devs learned they couldn’t lean on nice animations and bright colors alone, the games improved.

@@deckofcards87I never owned an actual neo-geo, but own some collections/individual emulation releases and played neo-geo games in the late '90s, and in my opinion they really started getting going with the Neo-Geo in 93/94 with games like Samurai Showdown, then in 95/96 you had Metal Slug etc.

Used to rent the AES system, and Super Spy back in the early 90's. I was fortunate to be playing Neo Geo back then. I never had a chance to play this one though. Will add it to my todo list.

just accidently game overed on this game somehow and came here to see the ending since i figured i was close. turns out i wasnt even halway thru!! they really made this as long as possible so u keep puttin those quarters in!!

It has similarities with The Super Spy, except Cross Swords is almost entirely linear. Again, both games are entirely too long and pretty boring.

I don't like the Puppet Sword, it reverses your power gauge. The gauge will only rise if you're guarding, meaning your strikes start off weak and have to guard for a while to build up to max power. Transforming the enemies into scarecrows is also pretty useless. Sure they can't attack and pose no threat, but you also don't get any items from them when defeated either, either money, life or even magic refill. Plus the sword becomes underpowered by the next stage anyway when Shield Axe DX becomes available It may be wise to get the Thunder Sword on stage 2 or 3, it's magic is strong enough to kill the stage 3 boss in just 2 uses

You can see through the player. They need to do this for every 3rd person games so the character is not blocking your view.

I have no frame of reference here as I havn't played Punch Out or Crossed Swords but they do remind me of each other and you do compare them, so would you say the action in Punch Out is also too long and boring? And do you think someone who enjoys Punch Out would get the same satisfaction from playing this game? I agree with you that the campaign is probably a bit too long from what I see, they could have condensed it a bit better or quickened the pace with things.

Punch-out is generally a lot less tedious, unless you count the arcade games with infinite loops. I think Crossed Swords 2 improves on the original formula in a lot of ways even though it still has some problems.
