CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman: "I'm a rabid libertarian"

"I'm a rabid libertarian," says Greg Glassman, 56-year old founder of the worldwide fitness phenomenon called CrossFit.
Glassman opened the first CrossFit gym (or "box" in CrossFit lingo) in the mid-1990s in Santa Cruz, California. Today, there are more than 7,000 CrossFit affiliates around the world. These affiliates are not franchises, they're independently operated boxes owned by entrepreneurs who pay $1,000 to get certified as a CrossFit trainer and then pay $500-$3000 annually for the right to use the CrossFit brand. Each affiliate is free to innovate, which makes CrossFit a kind of open-source fitness community. Despite - or because of - its unconventional approach, CrossFit is projected to generate $100 million in revenue this year.
As independent in his exercising as he is in his politics, Glassman's relentless focus on results has created an army of athletes who have left conventional gyms for the allure of the "WOD" (CrossFit's "workout of the day").
Every day a new WOD is posted on the CrossFit website, and all around the world people compete against each other to complete a series of constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements (squats, sprints, pull-ups, dead lifts, and more). WODs aren't easy, and it's not uncommon for "CrossFitters" to vomit after a particularly difficult workout (they call it "meeting Pukie," Crossfit's puking clown mascot).
CrossFitting is not just about difficult competitive workouts, though. It's also about being a member of a supportive community. A Green Beret told Glassman that doing CrossFit helped him realize that the secret to developing the camaraderie necessary for special-forces units is to combine agony with laughter.
CrossFitters are also unconventional when it comes to diet. Instead of the grain-based dietary recommendations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, CrossFitters tend to eat a paleo-style diet heavy on meat and unprocessed foods. "Our view," says Glassman, "is that grains are best consumed by livestock, and what homo sapiens need is a diet of meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar."
CrossFit is not without its critics. Many conventionally minded trainers believe that the intensity of CrossFit workouts increases the chances of injury. Others, noting the paleo diet, the functional movements and the extraordinary enthusiasm common among CrossFitters, liken CrossFit to a kind of caveman cult. Glassman's response? "The caveman thing? Yeah, I'll tell you what. I don't think it's an insult to any CrossFitter."
The 2013 CrossFit Games start today and culminate on Sunday, July 28, when the winners will be crowned. This year, around 140,000 athletes from around the globe entered the open competition. CrossFit fans can watch live streams of the event Monday-Thursday on the CrossFit games site. The games will be covered by ESPN3 and ESPN2 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I’ve always liked Glassman for the very reason he gave of Hayek. “I never see any refutations as much as I do reactions”. So goes CrossFit. A lot of people react to it, but those that have experienced its utility can never deny what has happened to them! I appreciate you Glassman.

I give him that credit.. But he sold it to everyone by using the "lateral raise" as the description of conventional bodybuilding. Thats all he ever brings up when he talks about "regular gyms". FYI crossfitters... ALL bodybuilders supplement compound movements such as STRICT military presses with movements like the lateral raise. For him to try to say conventional lifting is ineffective is just stupid. But thats how he sold the program. He can upsell his precious program, but dont mislead people by spitting bullshit.

Crossfit is for failed third tier athletes who weren't good enough for real sports. Crossfit is a blend of different workouts from other sports such as the clean and jerk, snatch (the Olympic lifts), powerlifting, and gymnastics. Crossfit will never replicate the model nor genetics it takes to thrive as an Olympic lifter, powerlifter, or gymnast. Secondly, kipping is something gymnasts do to prepare for a movement, kipping is NOT a pull-up nor a substitute for a pull-up. Also if you do not possess the necessary strength to complete a real pull up or a set of 5-10, you can rip your ligaments apart by kipping. My personal opinion, is that Crossfit is a great way to get in shape, but at an average of $200 a month it's directed at upper middle-class whites who still probably want to feel athletic or pretend to be 'athletes', and who weren't good enough for their high school and college teams. At $200 a month, it smells like a scam and there are other affordable options of getting fit in a similar manner such as P90x. By all means Crossfit will not make you a star athlete in any other sport, if you want to get good at Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting or gymnastics, you should train for those sports. If you want to get good at cross-training and be strong, lift weights, run and maybe do P90x. At $200 a month, Crossfit is a rip-off. I will say the only redeeming aspect of Crossfit is its promotion of a clean diet and SOME trainers who coach their patrons on how to lift properly. Outside of that, Crossfit is an expensive cult for people who have the expendable income to waste on pretending to be athletes.

And I went the total other way. I used to work out at home, but just couldn't keep going past like 20 mins. Then I joined a gym (less then a mile away), and work out 3-4 times a week for an hour plus. Works great. So really, to each there own. I think CrossFit will not really die, but just become part of workout program in general. It will be a class at a gym, rather then a CrossFit gym.

It's painfully clear in reading comments (why god, why?!) that people love to criticize something they have never even experienced and are obviously afraid of. If you want to comment intelligently, try it and then make your call. It's okay, it's not for everyone and you don't have to enjoy challenging yourself mentally and physically. But hating something you've never even tried is beyond ridiculous. What Greg A. said at the end is absolutely right on.

Yes, that is why Crossfit shouldn't be for people just getting into working out.. You should at least have 3+ years of solid training experience before you get into crossfit because performing deadlifts, power cleans, snatches, overhead press are difficult in itself, but add fatique and exhaustion and high - rep schemes and beginners are just asking for a massive physio bill. This is also exactly why the gap between top level crossfitters and amateurs is so large..

100 pull-ups. Forgot to mention kipping. You simply can't have longevity with this type of a workout. This is why the best x fitters spend most of their time away from competition doing strength work, traditional weight training, basic cardio. It's the normal people that think you have to do an x fit event everyday that will end up with injuries and have no longevity.
@ShadeWMD
@ShadeWMD 11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it varies based on what you want. I used to go to a gym but I found it very easy to make excuses not to go. Plus, it was a bit of a hassle to have to get ready and sit in traffic. I made my office into a home gym and have exercise equipment littered everywhere so it's impossible for me to ignore. lol For some people, it's the opposite and they have to workout outside the house or they won't at all.

I don't think being against theft qualifies as selfishness. Neither does having an institution of force steal other people's stuff for your own benefit qualify as selflessness. The truth is that the difference lies in one side relying on spontaneous order and peaceful exchange to improve the state of mankind, whereas the other side relies on one-sided confiscation. I reserve selflessness to my own actions - I don't outsource that to the state.

I'm thinking of a basic cardio machine(elliptical or treadmill), some free weights and maybe some plyometric stuff like medicine balls or stretch bands. Pretty cheap. There's tons of exercise programs out there that work and have helped their creators become rich. My point is just that they ALL work if you commit to them. The problem is that most people don't want/don't need those systems to be extremely fit. Some people are too lazy to devise their own system.

1. Most CrossFit gyms make sure that their members can perform at least 10 strict pull ups before they learn to kip. So, its not like we don't use strict or strict weighted pull ups to build strength. 2. kipping allows you to do more work in a shorter amount of time, so you're power output is higher. CrossFitters want to be both and stronger powerful. 3. You are totally wrong when you say bigger muscles generate more power. Read a book or google sarcoplasmic vs myofibrillar hypertrophy.

It depends on what you want to call "selfish". Homeschoolers have been called "selfish" from the beginning because they weren't willing to leave their child as hostages of the state held in order to force the "good parents" to transform instead of flee public schools. Not that any parent is given the power to transform public schools, but they were still portrayed with no embarrassment as "selfish" for favoring the welfare of their own children over strangers.

1. "most" 2. Kipping, by definition, makes the workout easier. This means that you need to do more to get the same result which also means you need to take more time. 3. Where did you say you studied human physiology? Regardless, I totally agree, that's why sports like mma and boxing dont bother with separating individuals into different weight categories, theres just no point.

I love the crossfit theory that a crossfitter can dominate in any sport with little training. Sports involve hand eye and coordination. A cross fitter may be able to dominate different exercises but sport is completely different. Look at the bodies of tennis players, basketball, soccer players, they dont look like crossfitters. Hardcore crossfitters most closely resemble guys that compete in worlds strongest man events.

"they don't look like crossfitters." Well they don't look like "professional crossfitters" you are right. Can they use crossfit to be better athletes through improvement of their overall fitness? 100%, I've seen it first hand. Have you done CrossFit before? Technically, you need no equipment to get fit at home. I personally go to the gym, not because I need $10,000s of equipment, but because when I try at home, I am easily distracted and my workouts are 10 mins, rather then an hour plus. For me, $40 a month is money very well spent. Different things work for different people. I am sure for some Crossfit is "the thing" others need personal trainers, others a gym and other need nothing at all for a great workout.

If you want the "gym experience" you will really have to pay more then that for home equipment. The kind "all in one" home equipment that would give you 90% of the gym's weight machines will generally run $800-$1,000, if you wanted a tread mill, it's $250 for a super cheapy one and ~$1,000 for a gym quality. Dropping $2K for a home gym would also be a 50 month gym membership for me. You can also spend $200 and get a basic home gym, but it would be the "full gym experience".

The math suggests a minimum of $ 3.5M per year for brand license renewals alone . Of course he wouldn't pay taxes if he had the choice. From Reason TV (Paul Feine & Alex Manning): "...more than 7k CrossFit affiliates around the world. These affiliates are not franchises, they're independently operated boxes owned by entrepreneurs who pay $1k to get certified as a CrossFit trainer and then pay $500-$3k annually for the right to use the CrossFit brand."

What's funny is that the relationship between mass and power in physics is not even remotely direct, and even more so in strength training. Size does correlate with strength to some degree, but apparently you're not strong or big enough to realize that.

Italian, you sound well versed and I can tell you know your stuff with fitness. I can appreciate it that. However, I have been doing CF for almost 2 yrs this march 2014 and no, I do not juice. I eat well and do eat very well. I am normal person working 111 hrs of overtime each month in the last 2 mths and have had gains on my strength just doing 4 workouts a week. I think that a blanket statement is not merited.

Most crosfitters upper middle class. As crosfitter is completely non-political, it is likely not going to have a strong political bias from it's members, other then their socioeconomically background. Of those who do cross fit and voted in the last elections, ~1% likely voted Libertarian, because that is what the nation did as a whole. Of the question "Obama or Romney?" the vote would likely have been completely split.

On election day one of 2 candidates will win only because people believe only one of 2 candidates will win. If people did not vote who their are told to vote for but who they believed in, third parties would win all the time. There where several presidential elections that had third parties getting over 10% and winning states in the 20 century. It just takes enough people having enough of a problem with the status quo. With a Congress Approval rate of 14%, we might be heading that way now.

I'm not saying the idea itself isn't a good business strategy, but I'm talking about people who actual commit to the lifestyle. Will people honestly do that on a long-term basis? I doubt it. It's a small minority of people who work out at all, and an even smaller percentage of that would want to commit to some system. I'd never commit to anyone else's system. I have my own and it works for me. I prefer the freedom to create/modify my own system to meet my needs. That's free.

Yes, many Libertarians feel that getting money stolen from us back is good. However, all Libertarians are opposed to taxation as it currently stands. We are opposed to SS because is its a ponzi scheme, meaning those cashing out are funded by those paying in. There is no real savings or benefit to it that can't be beat by a private retirement savings program. We are opposed to our current taxation system because it is used to redistribute wealth from one segment of the population to another.

Yeah, because every other gym only has members that use proper form, which they learned without instruction, and all of them make up their workout... Libertarianism doesn't mean disassociated or anarchist. It's a political philosophy that works toward social harmony with an emphasis on personal preference and personal responsibility, recognizing that people serve different roles and have different preferences. People doing the same thing or striving for similar goals is not anti-libertarian.

Cross Fit is the Gold standard, where do all of you think these circuit training warehouses that are popping up all over the country originated from. CrossFit may have been too extreme for most people but the principles are living in those circuit gyms and classes you are taking at 24hr, Equinox, Crunch,Golds,Planet Fitness etc..
