Crossfitters just do the whole known universe a favor and don’t put the “butterfly pull up” under the category of “pull up”. Call it something else, like “bar swings”, “butterfly swings”. Don’t disrespect one of the hardest lifts in fitness.
@twirdman24 жыл бұрын
I can see wanting them to call butterfly pull ups something else but " one of the hardest lifts in fitness." is a bit hyperbolic. I'll admit I cannot do a pull up but it is hardly one of the hardest lifts in fitness. According to docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19l4tVfdTJLheLMwZBYqcw1oeEBPRh8mxngqrCz2YnVg/edit#gid=2032740838 A bar pull up is listed as a level 3 skill or a basic skill. It rates the same as a beginners shrimp squat, a single leg glute bridge, or a .43X press. I can easily do all of those and I wouldn't consider myself particularly strong or athletic. Being able to do a pullup is great but let's not pretend it is some Olympic level feat. It is a basic skill for anyone doing calisthenics.
@nashwilliams58524 жыл бұрын
Anthony Van Duzer perhaps In terms of skill and body awareness, but in terms of exertion; obviously a pull up is harder. If it were as “easy” as the shrimp squats and glute bridges, you could do one.

I've tried some butterflies in the past but they will make my shoulders ache and it's not worth it at my age and I can strict pull up 10 and strict dip 10 (and it may be my "technique" but I'm just not that interested - I mean I AM interested if I thought I could reliably train with them safely, but I'm not willing to gamble on my 42 year old shoulders). As someone else, I think, said already, I use strict in my strength training but I do kip in WODs because of the efficiency. I mean the POINT is to get things done quickly, and doing singles with strict once you lose multiples in the strict movement will slow you (me) down enough that you'll lose a reasonable amount of the benefit of doing the metabolic conditioning in the first place. Kipping allows you to drop from the rig gasp a few gasps and jump back up in knock off another 3 or 4 or 5 (probably before dropping again)(for mere mortals like myself). Anyway, the clear point of butterflys is to be as fast as possible going from a hang from a bar to a chin over a bar (or chest to a bar), and THAT'S IT. Too many strength athletes miss the point. They are NOT being done for any functional reason at all whatsoever, so to try and judge them on that basis means you simply are not paying attention (I mean it's all but admitted by athletes that use the movement it's not about being the strongest guy doing the most pull-ups, it's about getting through the damn reps as fast as possible and efficiently as possible). I guess that dead horse has been beat enough at this point. I think they are fun to watch at the Games, to be honest, but I'm a fan.
@tylerjaehamilton4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment JDH (as always) Your 42 shoulders are doing well with 10x strict pull-ups/dips! People tend to get the idea of this movement mixed up. It's not functional, but if utilized with the correct technique/strength requirements, it becomes relatively safe. That dead horse is burried... 🤣

I've been doing cross fit for a year now.. I talked a lot of crap about it before I started. Fact of the matter is walking into a cross fit box and seeing bad form is no different then people lifting with bad form in a commercial gym. Some boxes get it right and teach things like the strict pull up before any kipping movements. Most boxes I've been too have a "on ramp" class that is 6 weeks long teaching foundational movements. My biggest problem with cross fit is competing. I've done some small local competitions and there is no way to bracket people appropriate for skill level. You have guys that are RX athletes coming down to scaled divisions and destroying everyone only because they know they cant win in RX. Thanks for the video btw.
@tylerjaehamilton4 жыл бұрын
K9, Thanks for this interesting comment! Firstly, 6 Week on ramp program? That's insanely long! Most on ramps generally last 2-3 sessions! As for the RX competition issue, I fully agree, a LOT of people who are technically considered 'RX' generally go scaled to crush people and make themselves feel better. I liked how it use to be, one division, no scaled or RX, weights would be standard 60/40 (135lbs/95lbs) if you were a beast, you'd come first.

You are comparing oranges to apples. They are totally different to strict. CrossFit say it is efficiency, but by doing butterfly, athletes are not improving on their strict. Strict pull ups have been a measure of strength since time began. And so what winds up the non- CrossFit community is when some skinny kid says yeah, I just done 150 pull ups... and then they can not do 10 strict. That is frustrating. Just be honest with yourselves. You worked out hard (and respect there!). But the work out was zero pull ups and 150 butterfly pulls.
@clintiacuone17034 жыл бұрын
Lee Ramsden of course they’re not improving on there strict pull ups cause they aren’t doing “strict pull ups” when doing butterfly ones😅 I’m hearing what you’re saying but it was just a bit ridiculous how you worded you’re argument cause no one will improve at something by not doing said thing, ALOT of people train strict movements in CrossFit, cause building strict strength and endurance in turn improves endurance for the butterfly/kip pull up, I may not be a high level competitor yet and I can’t speak for all other competitive crossfitters but I train strict gymnastics anywhere from minimum 2-4 times a week

i LOVE this video, i tried to explain pretty much this exact thing to my coach and other crossfitters a bunch of times. the thing that bugs me is when people say its the same thing, strict, kipping, butterfly....they are not the same! people kip and butterfly to do more faster...if you can do more faster then it isn't the same. now that is different than the movement not doing anything for fitness, like you said...its just each one has its place is all. though it is WAYY overused in training especially, and even in competitions there needs to be more strict pull ups. what i always tell people is like you said, military etc. can only do strict, so hero wods should require strict for RX. i even have a little quite i tease friends with... "Micheal Murphy couldn't cheat so why are you?" anyway, great video. thanks.

People who can do 10 unbroken butterfly pull ups can definitely do strict pull ups, one does not exclude the other! No decent box will “allow” practitioners to do kipping or butterfly without training strength/strict. Anyone attempting a first strict pull up will most likely kip in one way or the other, it’s natural.

Great video, as usual. I like that you point out the legitimate purpose of the move, but also how it's a limited use case that shouldn't be applied to everything. To me it's no different than any other sport. If you find something you can do in competition that makes you faster without breaking any rules, hell then go for it. It doesn't mean you'll do all of your training that way, nor should you. I think the 'problem' is that people see XFit competition videos and think everyone does all of their pull-ups that way. You don't see a lot of videos of people doing normal movements which is hopefully the bulk of their workouts.
@tylerjaehamilton4 жыл бұрын
For most Elite and high tier CrossFit athletes, they perform strict pull-ups 3 times a week (Ben bergerons 'Comptrain athletes') But your right Jad, it's no different to other sports, it's just from the outside like you said, it seems like CrossFitters only do butterfly 🤣

I don’t mind CrossFit and have actually really wanted to get involved because I want some consistency in my workouts and maybe get jacked down the road. I just can’t get around the kipping thing. Not saying that’s why I haven’t joined yet, I just can’t afford it right now, but man why is a particular workout only valuable in a certain workout setting? Benching is good universally, the pull-ups are good universally, the squat the curl, the ohp, running, dips, so many workouts are universally good. Why does CrossFit have such a centralized view of kipping when it’s admittedly only good for CrossFit. CrossFit jacking up presses and jerks and more volume is great and I love it, I like how intense they take other workouts and give it “the CrossFit treatment” ya know? I just want to know why kipping pull-ups are anything more than an insiders fitness joke. Why is this move defended by so many people gahhhhhhhh!

I only know that they do gymnastic muscle ups where they keep straight lines without any stupid arch like this in crossfit. I wanted to cry when i saw your hs pushups. Gymnastic is not popular because people cant imagine how hard gymmast skills are (for ex rings routine) , people cant distinguish skills difficulty or notice perfect form. Otherwise in crossfit where more is better and for every amateur it is easy to understand.
