First activation would be that it was tripped too early, and then the "fail" is called a "crossing time-out malfunction" Happens all the time, nothing super notable. If the VLocity hadnt stopped down the line, the first activation would have been when the train passed. Obviously congestion at Pakenham Station

I would call it a failure if it didn't activate when a train was coming. This is just a mild inconvenience. The system worked as it should... for safety.

Yeah, I guess so, my guess is that the train was stopped at a red signal waiting for a free platform at Pakenham Station, while also on the crossing circuit. After a while, the crossing timed out as the train didn’t move for 2 minutes or so, then reactivated when the train started moving again.

Are you crazy, this sort of bad functioning causes people to drive around the gates and other unsafe attitudes to railway warnings.

While I do agree with you in that it may encourage people to drive around the gates, in my experience, in Melbourne, I have never seen someone drive around boom gates. The most ‘risky’ thing I have seen is just running through the crossing when the lights activate but the booms haven’t gone down, or at a crossing without gates. However, my perspective is only from a Victorian one, so the attitude to level crossings in other states/countries may be different.

Not really, I just felt like documenting it as it was a coincidence while filming this crossing; but yeah the crossing will be gone in a few months
