Hey there! We're Joe + Kalyn!
As online entrepreneurs, we thought, "why not work from home... on the road"? So in 2019, we bought and renovated a 2005 Jayco Designer Fifth Wheel, which took us to every state in the lower 48. But the economy hit our business especially hard after the 'vid, spurring us to pivot in new directions and try different strategies, including various RV work camping jobs!
Follow our full-time RV Life journey as we build back our bank accounts in order to fund the biggest RV trip of our lifetime-Alaska.

Paying for dry camping on private property helps the owners pay for property taxes, road maintenance, tree trimming, the greeter, liability insurance and probably more. How lovely you had a place to park since the park was full. Bless you for supporting a small business.

Oh we understand that and we probably wouldn't have even mentioned it if it was around $10 a night to stay here... It's hard to justify paying $29CAD a night for zero amenities. When you can get full hookups for $45CAD it's strange to think that the Water, Electric, and Sewer might only be $15 of that. 🤷🏼 Just our opinion. -J

My rule for Canada and alaska was to always fill up when at a half tank. You’ll hit road construction once you get farther north - they’ll have you sit for hours sometimes waiting. Always turn off The truck when you arrive to a construction stop. You may sit 5 min or 2 hrs. I made the mistake of leaving the truck idling after I had passed a fuel stop. nail biter. While you’re in Canada, spend the money to get some scepter MFC’s to keep an extra 10-15 gal (2 or 3 jugs) of diesel in your truck next to your water in the bed. Late summer far north some of the stations run out of fuel and you’re at the mercy of what’s available. I had to purchase fuel from a hunting camp one time from their generator tank. $10/gal…

FYI, some credit cards charge no foreign exchange fee. Some charge at or above the daily rate, and charge you at the end of each day. And some charge a transaction fee PLUS they settle at the end of the month, charging the average rate for the month. So it pays to ask ahead. Last time I was in Canada, the store didn't take dollars at par--but I could use Amex with no fees, at the official exchange rate for that day. It was a fast choice!
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 22 күн бұрын
Yep. Learned this one the hard way. 😂 One of our cards has a per-international-transaction fee. Thankfully we had only made 2 purchases before we figured it out. -J

Probably a little late for this suggestion to help you guys, but might help someone else...write down the Metric (meters) height of your rig and tape it on your dash where you can easily see it (next to the speedometer?). Good call! We're still in country so we may do it. We know that we're good if it's 4 meters or over - and that gives us a little buffer. We never thought to convert the length today and kept seeing length restriction signs. 👀 Did some quick math though and figured it out. -J

So glad your trip has started. I was yelling at the screen when you passed on the gas and decided to go to Banff. Been there and done that but our credit card was compromised so we spend hours at that gas station in the heat of summer with super crowds. Glad you are there on the shoulder season. Enjoy and here’s to many shenanigans with friends❣🙉🙊🙈

Haha! If it had been a reasonable turn around...we would have totally done that. But it was literally miles of 2 lane roads with no real good spot to turn around without getting into it's own type of pickle. -J

As a kid We use to drive near Toronto down to Niagara falls And walk over the border on a birth cert And say drivers lic for "picture" ID We made it once with no picture. Head over And get American candy And "slice" soda See the spots And head back No issues .....2002 On a whim I felt like Buffalo wings My childhood friend fills up the tank we grab a coffee And head to Where else? Buffalo for wings ...Border guard : Passport drivers ID where you coming from where you going? Buffalo! For what reason ? : Wings ...This guy could not grasp the idea...Drive over to lane 2 >>> 1 hr 45 mins of questions And background checks 2011 - My Childhood friend does stand up comedy as a hobby But gets paid to do it Border guard (All the questions) Then sees my friends ash from his cigarette drop on the ground...Sir i am going to remind you while in the USA not to litter. Confused He replies Ahh Ok there I will try not to. Sir you think your being funny? Let me ask you something What do you do for a living..(Man O man I seen this one coming) I'm a comic ! ( I think the officer was going to say Well im a border guard I can deny you entry to the United states so smarten up) Instead the guys eyes widened And face turned red....OK mister comic you want to mess around ...Line 2 AGAIN ! They tore apart the van looking for anything Meanwhile Here is us in the office answering questions TRYING to tell the supervisor He is a comic he has done shows ! ..nope nothing ...Then my friend says Oh In my glove box there is a flyer for Yuk Yuk's comedy show with my name on the roster dated 2 weeks ago ...Supervisor go's out to the van pulls out the paper Shakes his head walks back in ..Officer i told you And it was your worker that i was honest with i answer all the questions the best i could It was just bad timing they were pissed off with me for no reason And bad choice of words that took us here. "Guys" grab your stuff And go I'm so done with this Asshole today ( We assumed the other guard ) 2024 - I dont go out of that border any more : )

Wow! So beautiful. Wow! I am impressed at your driving skills, Joe. Sure do wish I was a fly in the wall of your RV. When I vacation I love to see nature, not people. I wish I had been able to travel where y’all are. My trips to Canada have been to Niagara Falls and around the area there. It was our honeymoon trip. Had to go to Niagara Falls because my parents honeymooned there. I’d been once but my husband never had been. We went to Niagara in the Lake which was kinda cool. Funny thing, we lived in a small town in Ohio. When I was making reservations for our stay I was giving my address and said the name of the town, Farmersville. She immediately asked if it was xxxx state. I was so shocked because our town was around 800 people. She was from there. It was cool because we touched base, she came in to work just to meet us. Had so much fun in Canada. I am living vicariously through you guys. I doubt I’ll be able to travel again, just one of those things. I love to travel and always thought I’d do it when I retired. Well, along comes health issues! lol You guys are so smart to do it now. I pray you will be able to continue as long as it is your dream. Blessings.

I went through the border near PENTICTIN, THEY WERE SOOOO MEAN TO MEEEE. I told them I lived in my rig and the guy made me park and go in and insinuated I was going to mooch off the CANADIAN govt. I told him I was a day trader, he said "well, I don't know anything about that" FINALLY, his supervisor came and snatched my passport from him and handed it to me and said "WELCOME TO. ANADA, ENJOY YOUR STAY" NEVERmind I really wanted to leave because the WHOLE hillside was on fire, inferno, which was 100 yards from the center. REMEMBER, you get a 30% DISCOUNT ON EVERYTHING with the conversion. 🙌 Sorry CANADA !!! IF you go into BANFF go at like 6:30a-7:00a a huge heard of Elk are parading down the sidewalk where the BANFF sign is.

Thank you for a very entertaining viewing experience - trust your travels through Canada and Alaska are amazing! FYI T-Mobile backed off of their away plan and have put it on indefinite hold... we've been using it in our RV for nearly 2 years and were scrambling to find an alternative as well, but glad we have a bit more time as it's a great deal... considering starlink as an option if/when they go back to the away plan. Thanks again and have fun traveling with Craig and Victoria.

Yeah - I'm not sure what is going to happen on the Tmobile front. It got more dramatic for us. They wouldn't allow us to return our unit in store, so we had to ship it. I packed it well but they claim it was broken so they wanted to charge us $75 for the return. Soooo now, we're disputing that. So much fun! lol. -J

@@godsdeliciousunknown Apparently some tmobile stores are not actually owned by Tmobile, but are more like franchises or some such. So you might be able to return one to one owned by the company - but everything in our area at the time were the authorized dealers as opposed to actual tmobile (even though they all look the same). -J
