Today, we're crossing the U.S. border with our RV as we leave Canada. This will be our third border crossing with our camper after living in our RV full time for 2+ years, and we've heard that coming back across the border to the United States can be quite difficult! Was this our experience? Join us today to find out!

We’re Victoria & Craig! In 2021, we decided that we needed to make life a little more exciting, so we bought a used fifth wheel and completely renovated it. Then, we sold our house in Tallahassee, Florida and hit the road full time in our RV! We’ve traveled all around the United States (and Baja Mexico!) and fell in love with boondocking in our RV at the most beautiful places. In 2023, we upgraded to a brand new Brinkley RV Model Z 3100. You’ll always find us on some kind of outdoor adventure, whether it’s hiking the Grand Canyon, rock climbing in Yosemite or surfing the shores of Baja Mexico. Years ago I was taking a beer judging class in Buffalo and there was a woman from Canada taking it that had memorable wild hair. The course had instructors teach about the different styles. On test day the lady from Canada gets to the border, hands over her passport and is asked “what is the difference between a northern and southern English brown ale?” Stunned at the question, she gives the answer, gets her passport back, and the agent says “you may pass.” The agent was the teacher for the brown ale class.

Had to take my youngest son up to Canada..up near North Bay from the US to play Junior A hockey. We told the Canadian Border Agent why we were coming into the country. The border agent seemed really impressed for him playing and asked (jokingly) should she ask for his autograph and told us to watch out for moose on the roadway up that way. Couldn’t have been nicer.

I have never crossed anywhere into or out of Canada from anywhere but Maine. I have always found the Canadian border guards very friendly - all business - but friendly. I have always dreaded coming back to Maine because most of the time the US guards are gruff and unfriendly. I have found this to be true since my first visit to Canada back in 1967.

Drove from Ontario, Canada through the US to North Dakota and back into Saskatchewan, Canada. The female Canadian border agent naturally asked where we’re going and we explained we were going hunting staying in a small town north of the border. Two days later a young woman approached us in a hotel restaurant and says. “Do you remember me? I was your CBS agent when you crossed the border!”

Some years ago we were re entering the US from Canada north of Glasgow, MT. At the time I was about 75, the nastiest arrogant person kept badgering me about the drugs I had hidden in the pickup, Yes I know, just doing his job. Well, I finally had enough of his BS and remarked “ It’s quite obvious you’re parents failed totally in teaching you about having respect for others “. A voice came over his radio, “ I do believe he has your number “. That was that.

We have crossed borders many times. Very straightforward. take your sunglasses of before getting there, Have your papers (passports) ready, only person that should ever speak is the driver, unless someone else in the vehicle is asked a direct question...otherwise zip it. Cameras off, answer all questions as truthfully and briefly as possible, remain polite, and things should go smooth. Then enjoy your travels on the other side. another great video by the way.... continued safe travels..

Just a little information to help reduce your stress. If a bridge doesn't have the height listed it should be just over 13 feet and 6 inches as that is the typical height of trucks. We are former truck drivers. If the height is lower they are are supposed to show this.

Funny story! My daughter-in-law is from North Carolina and her family now lives in Tennessee. She had been LEGALLY living in Canada when she met my son, and after they were married wanted to re-plate her vehicle to Ontario Plates. It had to be safety certified and one of the rules was that the manual had to be bilingual. The mechanic looked at her manual and said, "Ya, it is bilingual." The rules doesn't specify what two languages. Her manual was English and Spanish!

Watched your travel through Michigan and Canada. We live in Michigan and in 2019 took our grandson for a trip around Lake Huron in our travel trailer. Crossing to and from Canada is no big deal. Our grandson got to swim in Lake Huron, Superior and Michigan. When we got back to Dearborn we took him down to Sterling State Park to swim in Lake Erie. At 6 years old he swam in 4 of 5 great lakes in August of 2019. Late in August, the day his sister was born we traveled into Canada again on the way to Catskills area of NY. We swam in Lake Ontario, all 5 great lakes. We went through Canada again on the way home by way of Buffalo and stayed at Niagara Falls KOA, the one you stayed at. We went in and out of Canada with our travel trailer 3 times in August and September of 2019. Like watching you.

Having crossed that border crossing many times, it is often busy (Next trip planned for Feb/Mar 2024). The Custom Officer do a good job and we haven't had any significant issues. @@stephenbagby3201 I am sorry for your experience. We cross into the US at least once a year, sometimes 3 or 4 times for 30 years. I never had a BAD experience. While occasionally the officer (both directions) seems a little distracted and unfriendly, but never BAD. I have only been pulled over to Secondary Twice (1 - Port Huron US, 1 - Sarnia - CAN) Same Bridge. In both cases I was treated well and they left no mess in searching my vehicle. And a third time flying into the US from Person Airport (Toronto). Again, very professional. Even got a VISA so I wouldn't have any problems entering the US for the next 6 months. (I was on my way to volunteer in Biloxi MS after Hurricane Katrina). However, I have heard of many stories of bad experiences over the years from both sides of the border. 98% of the time, the Customs/Immigration Officer ask a few questions, and your on your way in a minute or two. The one think I've noticed with KZbin RV Travelers crossing borders, is how often they don't know the rules, or attempt to hide that they are breaking them. I'm not surprised if someone in a RV gets a closer look by border officer, than normal. Our last crossing into the US, he asked a couple of questions, closed his window and we sat there for a couple of minutes. Then he said "Have a nice day" and we were on our way. Coming home, when asked where we had been (Olive Hill KY), the reply was, that not a normal place and we were on our way 10 seconds later. Once going into the US I was asked where I was going and said "Olive Hill KY" and the officer must know the town. He said "Why?"! LOL Pre 9/11 I lived in a border town. The easiest way to cross the border back then was to say "I'm going to Walmart". Once I said that, I was on my way!

Responsive straight forward answers is all they need to hear. Food that isn't packaged, aka fresh food not FDA inspected, is the only food they need to see. Commercial loads, freight shipments. Paperwork for every commercial load crossing a border is done & approved by an agent before the truck gets to the border

We arrived just after a few days of rainy weather - we were lucky that we enjoyed beautiful weather and the waterfalls were gushing. We live in New York state and I'm always happy to see when RV vloggers drive through upstate. There are some really nice areas that many will miss because they're often focused on seeing NYC, and there is so much more to New York than the city. If you happen to pass near New Paltz, check out the rock climbing at the Trapps cliffs in the Shawangunks. Sometimes called the "Gunks Cliffs".

Interesting! Gosh, I commented on your previous video, finding it humorous on the loonie & toonie, and the gas stations are in 'litres' not gallons, so the $168.9 price was for 1 litre of gasoline, or in your case you'd have paid whatever the diesel price was, in green, below the red gas price. Since I live on the west coast of Canada in B.C., I've only seen Niagara Falls once myself, so that was a highlight what you showed us, so a big thanks for that! As for the food you ate, like Craig, I don't care for Sushi either, so I would have chosen something different as well. Nice haircut Craig...as I've only had one haircut in the U.S. south of Phoenix in Arizona, as we spend a few months there most years, and go to a location with a ton of things to do to keep us busy, at a Premier RV resort. Noticed you have the Brinkley, and I'll have to look back to see if you did a 'tour' of it, as we currently have a Class A diesel pusher, but thought next we might like to try a truck & fifth wheel, so looked at the Brinkley, Momentum and Alliance unit's so far, but it would be nice to hear of the positives/negatives you've found so far! We've travelled up to Alaska a couple of times, and even up there have had no issues with the border patrol folks, as they are just doing their job in the questions asked. Stick to the rules and you'll be just fine. Stay safe, be kind and have fun!

@@ericgeorgetruckgrilling- it’s a nice courtesy. They can ask you to remove your sunglasses if they choose. If you have prescription glasses, just say so, it’s ok. The hat isn’t as much of an issue. I was in law enforcement and came to know several Customs officers on both sides of the border. Their jobs have similarities, but are very different as well. I did learn you tend to get what you give. A lot of people that complain about their experiences are about as easy to deal with as a LEO as well. They say all of us are jerks as well. A really big thing I noticed before I retired were people mixing up what they see on KZbin regarding US rules & regulations and thinking they applied in Canada as well. It gets frustrating when they start quoting the US Constitution. We fall under the Charter of Rights & Freedoms, or Charter for short. Something to remember at the border though,,,, they have every right to search, your vehicles, your purse, your electronic devices, it’s all fair game at the border l you are going from one country to another and there’s a reasonable expectation that you will be searched, you and your goods. You have rights, your goods do not. Their goal is to leave things as they found them, even though technically they don’t have to repack things. My friends, both sides have some interesting, but vetted stories. Both sides are very serious about protecting the rights of people crossing on both sides. Those rights can be different. (Firearms for example.)

So when you cross the border, they're asking if you have any purchases to declare. They're are limits to the amount of goods you can purchase in a foreign country and bring back home. They're particularly on guard for alcohol and tobacco products. So if you have purchased a lot in the foreign country (especially alcohol and tobacco) its a good idea to declare the purchases (and have receipts ready, if asked). You might have to pay taxes or duty on your purchases, but it's probably better than paying a fine for smuggling.

A comment that will help you prevent any accident when crossing a bridge. Prepare the route you are going to follow to know how many bridges you are going to cross, and look for information to know what the maximum height of each bridge is to be sure that you will not have problems crossing the bridge due to the height of your RV. I am saying this from personal experience. Enjoy the trip and always be prepared for any unexpected circumstance.

Never had any issues crossing the border crossings in the Niagara region. When the border agents say "Do you have anything to declare?", it's a catchall for declaring if you have any weapons, food, alcohol, plants, tobacco, animals, and drugs. Peace Bridge was named after the peace between Canada and the US. Canada, US, and UN flag are at the border line on the bridge. The bridge is a three lane bridge with the center lane alternating in direction based on traffic volumes.

They worry about soil from Canada, states like Idaho, Maine have some of the best Canadian soil. glaciers. They ask about the plate to see if it is your vehicle. I think if the bridge is over 14 feet some places do not list it on the bridge, but that is from memory from decades ago.

Ahh gotcha! They probably were all over 14 feet, but 14 feet can look pretty low with a 13’6” rig 😆

Now you have seen the worst part of Canada. Next time, Montreal and Quebec City, the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland then out to the west coast from Calgary, through Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper and any of the National Parks in the Alberta and BC mountains, then Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Then, you will have seen Canada although, the Yukon is absolutely wild and spectacular.

don't know if your garmin gps has a truck setting - but it you want to be sure - switch over to a Rand Mcnally Truck GPS (I think garmin might make one as well) they avoid low bridges and if you approach one at least in Canada - it starts screaming at you will a low bridge warning
@wildrvlife

Yes! We have an RV Garmin model and can put the height/length/weight in so that it makes sure we don’t go under any low bridges or over any weight restricted ones. It hasn’t steered us erring yet but I always have a worry in the back of my mind that there’s a low bridge it doesn’t know about 😆

Heights on bridges/overpasses on interstates don't need to be listed if they are at or higher than 16'. That minimum is 14' for other roads. Otherwise, they must be listed. At least this is how it is supposed to work!

In 1993 my parents and I went back to western New York state where we were from. We decided to rent a car and do a big loop through New England and enter Canada in Quebec through Maine. At the border Canadian Customs had us pull over into secondary. We had to exit the car and enter the building. They began searching the car. It was a rental so I knew they would. Inside, they separated me from my parents. What I experienced was nothing short of an interrogation. They questioned me for about a half hour. There was a man and a woman and the woman did most of the talking. I was 42 years old at the time. They asked everything, where I was born, how long I lived in California, what kind of work I did? How long I worked there? What was my arrest record? ( I had none) When was the last time I drank alcohol? (I don't drink alcohol) They didn't seem to believe me when I said I'd never been arrested. I finally told them that they had the Passport, run it. They probably did while I was being questioned. They finally let us go. I found out my parents were hardly questioned at all. When we got to Quebec city we took a tour and while on the tour, I explained to the guide what I went through at the border. I told her I've crossed into Canada many times and never went through scrutiny like that. She took one look and me and said it was because of my hair. I'm a male with long hair that was in a neat pony tail when I crossed the border. She said they probably suspected me of smuggling guns or drugs. I was shocked! I responded to her, "with my elderly parents with me? You people have been watching too much American TV." Coming back to the USA through Niagara Falls was a piece of cake. I'm going to Canada next summer. I have even longer hair than before and I have a ear piercing and a tattoo. Border security is even greater now than in 1993. Oh, I can't wait!

I’ve had the hardest time going into the US. Particularly the Peace bridge and the Osoyoos in BC. All in all most were very good as you experienced. I think generally your home country is easier and goes smoother. Im Canadian so I think that’s why I get fewer questions coming home. I cross close to home as well and go frequently. It also depends on what is going on at the time. Sometimes you can tell they are looking for someone or something. Feels tense. Having the dogs let into your vehicle and searching under is not a good feeling. Even when you know you have nothing Lol
