Crossing the Border into Canada 🇨🇦| Roadtrip to Canada with Dogs & Trying Poutine

It's time, we are crossing the Northern United States border into Canada for our Chasing Alaska series. On our way to the border we made a stop at Peach Arch State Park which is a beautiful stop you can't miss.
We made our way to the border where we thought all was going well until we were quickly fooled. We were searched and questioned viciously. We truthfully did not plan for such a change in events and it caught us off guard but luckily we were staying somewhere close for the night which relived some stress. We tried a Canadian delicacy, depending on who you ask, and we enjoyed it.

As a Canadian who crossed the border for work every day, I have dozens of stories about border crossing and interrogation. Both countries apply the same practices and they have a great deal of leeway as far as what they can ask and also the kind of documentation they can request. Before 9/11 it was easier but since then officers on both sides can be very demanding.

Same can happen going other way. I have had US customs do a 2 hour search of my van and full interrogation. They where convinced I was going to the US to work illegally, even though I was only going for 2 weeks and showed them all my reservations. Other times I have crossed with no issues. It’s seems just random or quota based. Love the video’s 👍🏼

Good video, thanks! Boarder security is tight because you would be surprised how many people try to get into Canada as a visitor, meanwhile they just want to come into Canada and disappear. One most obvious give-away is no US bank account or accounts that have been drained combined with no fixed address in Canada (i.e. friends/ hotel, etc.)

Meh. Crossing into the US is way more of a hassle than trying to cross into Canada. That wasn't even an 'interrogation'. They are asking standard questions and seeing your interior of your vehicle, I would think ya it will be searched lol

It isn't even a Quebec dish. I grew up there, We'd never heard of it in the 60s,70s, 80s. Not too many people ate poutine in Quebec until the 1990s. I first heard of poutine (while in Quebec) from a couple of Acadians from New Brunswick. I guess that's where it came from. I don't think that it originated in Quebec and if it did, it is a recent invention.

Poutine is a from Quebec, Canada, I am sure the A&W version was mediocre at best. There are also a few States that share a border with Canada where Poutine is very popular. Manchester, New Hampshire has a French Canadian section of the city and there is a restaurant named Chez Vashon that imports gravy and cheese curds from Canada to make their Poutine absolutely authentic. Their Poutine is out of this world good.

If you're staying a long time, then they want to make sure you're not working. They ask that in Europe too, especially if you're young. If you say you're only staying for a few days or a week, they won't ask you about how you're going to support yourself.

I've spent decades crossing from the U.S. into Canada and I could tell what you did wrong immediately. You were too vague on how much time you would spend in Canada and where you would be staying in Canada. Next time, tell the border agent that you're going to Campground X (spending money at a Canadian establishment) and you'll be there for X amount of time and then you'll be returning on X date. Very specific plans is what they want to hear. Spending money at a Canadian establishment is what they also want to hear. Next time, follow my advise and you'll have no problems at the border!

As a Canadian crossing into your country, we go through the same bullshit I remember back in the 70s in the 80s you didn’t even have to show ID just crossed they asked you if you’re Canadian citizen you said yes OK. Have a nice day.

So just some advice for the next time. Give clear and precise answers like we are planning to stay for 1 month. It’s when you change your answers that the border crossing guards use that as a flag. Just focus on the questions being 5:19 asked. Also when asked about how much money answering $500 Canadian is too little of a balance so be more clear to not confuse the situation. Anyways sorry for the delay but hope you have a great time in Canada.

I think that when they see one, two or more young people with a lot of stuff with them, crossing by car (so no return ticket like when flying) with the intention of hanging around the country, they wanna make sure your really just can hang around without trying to make some $ in any undisclosed way 😅

I actually think the poutine from A&W is very good and I'm Canadian. There's definitely some better places, but out the fast food places I think there is pretty good. Some of the best poutine IMO comes from food trucks.

@@OurFulltimeAdventure Unfortunately I don't because I live in Toronto which is obviously quite far from the west coast. Most of my favorite poutine comes from Ma and Pa type restaurants. Also, I just wanted to mention, you two people seem like the nicest people on the planet...lol No wonder you make such a good couple...lol. I was going back through some of your old clips and saw that you (I have a feeling I'm talking to Ashley) were involved in an explosion. I can't believe how tough your are. It's, surely, the most tasteless poutine on earth. You will get "Reel poutine" from independent Snack Bar or small restaurant simply because the cheese is expected to be better then cheese for fast food chain. Currently Canadian immigration is watching KZbinrs who are monitized. It is being viewed as making money/working in Canada without a work visa. It's a tax thing. Good thing you had decent sized bank accounts or theymight have denied entry

there is a ton of reasons they make sure you have enough money. One of the main reasons is there is disasters and road issues here all the time especially up north. They need to make sure that if your stuck somewhere you have enough for a few days lodging and food so it doesn't create a problem for the country. The other reason is people trying to hide in Canada to live off grid in places they are not supposed to. They just setup on someones land and it can take a long time to find them and get rid of them.

Why did you not expect to answer questions or have your vehicle searched when you entered Canada, the same thing happens on a regular basis when going into the US. They were simply. I hope you enjoyed just ensuring you were planning on doing what you declared you were and making sure that you didn’t forget to leave your gun at home. You were entering another country, not just crossing into a other state. As you said, 45 minutes and you were on your way. I hope you enjoyed your Canadian experience.

My car has been searched more by Canadian guards looking for illegal contraband or not paying enough duty. Enjoy your stay!🇨🇦

With the b"Bank accounts" bit... it is less common for them to go into that detail, but arriving with "an home" and a lot of belongings, they want to ensure you can support yourself without working for the "extended" period of your visit. If you said you were coming for a week to drive to Alaska they probably wouldn't have asked. The "maybe a month, month and a half" line would be a bit of a red flag both because of the duration and because you aren't on an exact schedule... you have the time and flexibility to "work" illegally... in their eyes. I don't think they were trying to intimidate you but they wanted to clarify and crossing a border is often a bit of nervous time anyway.

Yeah we had a plan but they didn’t like the answer we gave them I guess so the situation was escalated to what it was. Now that we are past it I can definitely see why they did what they did.

Vague timelines, lack of reservations, no finite US address, living in an RV, looking sketchy, type of vehicle, etc. are all triggers that indicate possible prolong stays, work, or a certain type of homelessness in Canada.

@OurFulltimeAdventure "La Banquise" is usually the most recommended spot but others like "Chez Claudette" and "Ma Poule Mouillée" are amazing as well and really there are so many smaller spots that does it justice as well. Definitely if you want to experience Canada you just cannot miss the east coast! You can order one that is classic and another one that could be with any topping like smoke meat for example, you can do some research before and choose according to your likings.

There are two reasons why you were asked to go in secondayr insepction: 1) you are travelling with animals. All dogs must be vaccinated against rabies. A specially trained officer must examine the dogs to ensure they match the dogs described in the vaccination certificates. The officer must also ensure that the dogs are transported in a humane way and that they present no visible signs of disease. 2) you have never been to Canada before. The officer's first duty is to ensure that you have sufficient resources to support yourself while in Canada and that you intend to leave at the end of your trip. That is why they asked you to show your bank records.

Boy; you have no idea what going the other way has been like for so many Canadians over the years. It's been much worse since 9/11 and most of us understand the reasons for that. Just do what most of us do; - grin and bear it while remaining polite and circumspect with your answers. When we retired we ordered a custom built fifth wheel and International toter with a bike barn for our Harley and the question that flummoxed us was being asked "how can you afford this rig?" I kid you not and when I gave my answer as "we are retired after forty years of both working high paying jobs he repeated the same question and that's when I told him I did not understand what answer would satisfy him. Did he want us to admit to drug dealing, bank robbery, paid assassins or what the heck? We were 57 years old "dinks" who had decided to take a hiatus from overseas travels to snowbird the American southwest fer crying out loud! We went through a full secondary inspection that time and they questioned why we had separated our cash into two separate bundles whereupon my wife explained one was American currency and the other was Canadian - I mean - good grief! You got off easy. LOL

We totally understand why it's done and it makes sense. We were just a bit shocked at the time since our intentions are pure and we've had many friends cross and only need to answer the normal couple of questions. We weren't expecting secondary and all of that but it is what it is and we still love Canada!

Were I border guard in any country I would have done the same to you. You raised a lot of red flags. I'm 70, have lived near the US-Canada border most of my life and crossed back and forth literally thousands of times and have never, ever had any trouble even in my long haired hippie days. People who post these "trouble crossing" videos are typically clueless and deserve what they get.

Hey, it happens to Canadians alot too...Seems if you're like four young males with long hair, they automatically assume your doing drugs so here comes the drug sniffing dogs! We had the gopro down low because a lot of the time people record and cause issues so we decided to just be lowkey about it so we could just provide a little insight as to what it's like pulling up to the border

I really do not have much sympathy. As a Canadian I have gone into the US many times over many years, and it is often far worse than anything you experienced entering Canada. I am very tired of people from the US thinking they have an automatic right to a free pass into Canada. Earlier comments about the questions re: money are absolutely right, and the process is completely legitimate and necessary. That fellow, from what we saw, was not scary in the least. Whereas I have been detained for over an hour without being told anything or being asked anything, just put into a room alone, with very clear instructions not to leave, not to communicate with anyone; once I was told I was trying to enter the US illegally (I wasn't); and once, because of a paperwork issue, was told to leave, and required to go back across the bridge, while the border guard had his hand on his firearm. And a whole lot of times where they were just very angry that I would want to enter the US. And yes, it got a lot harder and nastier after 9/11. Please do not complain about another country taking care of itself.

@@OurFulltimeAdventure were not the USA! We are a Commonwealth country and we don't equate freedom with being armed to the teeth. Have had exactly the same crossing into the USA, they have the same tactics to see if you're telling the truth. Had our car torn apart because my wife had her guitar with us and we were going to Nashville, they were very concerned if she was going to work in the States.

@@OurFulltimeAdventure The main reason is there are thousands of people of your age that go to work at the ski hills in whistler, banff, jasper and various other resorts all through alberta and bc. The CBSA know this so they want to make sure you weren't moving here. If you had $200 in your bank account it would be assumed you might have a job at whistler or something. At which point they would have started looking through your emails.
