Garrett’s Adventure

Garrett’s Adventure

9 ай бұрын

I’m Garrett. I’m 19 years old, and for the last year and a half, I’ve been learning to solo sail the Hawaiian Islands and preparing my boat, a Nor’sea 27 to travel the world. After months at the dock getting ready to leave Hawaii I finally set sail for French Polynesia. Now I’m entering the doldrums at 4 degrees north after an 11-day and 1,100 nautical mile mostly upwind bash from Hawaii. Thanks for watching, hopefully, you weren’t as bored as I was at the end of this video.

16:20 The tradition of drinking alcohol when crossing the equator on a sailboat is part of a maritime initiation ceremony known as the "Crossing the Line" ceremony or the "Neptune Ceremony." This ceremony is often held to mark a sailor's first time crossing the equator, which is a significant milestone in maritime navigation. The ceremony is rooted in maritime folklore and has been a part of naval and maritime cultures for centuries. It is typically a lighthearted and theatrical event that involves experienced sailors (often dressed up as King Neptune and his court) "initiating" the sailors who are crossing the equator for the first time.

I work out over the open water and yea, everyone looks out for everyone, it’s the law of the sea. I fly over open water and I’ve seen that blaze orange color of life rafts before and I always turn around to get a closer look. Most of the time it’s just adrift gear but if I was ever floating out there I’d want someone to double check just to be sure.

Great adventure. In 1991 at age 27 i sailed to fanning island from haleiwa on my 1972 sparkman stephens yankee 30. Gps was only just freshly available to the public that year. I learned celestial but bought a gps anyways. Glad i did. Since then have not used celestial unfortunately only gps . Sailed onward to tonga, fiji, vanuatu, newcaladonia, back to fiji where i bought my tayana 37. I have been in south east asia since 2006 on this boat. Surfing .

I think that fishing boat captain probably would have felt like quite the hero if you’d asked him to text your parents. I know we live in an era where everyone tries to be very autonomous and self sufficient, but it’s not working very well for society. It takes humility to ask for help, and quite possibly by doing so, we give meaning and purpose to others lives.

I started policing at the age of 23 after graduating college. Its overwhelming at first because of the impact one wrong move can make. To help lower the chances, you spend countless hours training and learning to be the best you can be for those bad moments that come along. I am now leaving that field and entering into aviation. As a student pilot you are tasked with learning the laws, weather, mechanical functions, navigating, and communicating, so that you can be a safe aviator. All that being said, I really respect you and know that you are a different breed of person. The dedication and sacrifices youve made to be at your level are commendable. From the outside, it looks like a 19 year old sailing a boat and posting videos about it. The reality of what you've put yourself through to get there is well beyond that. Smooth sailing and enjoy your journey through life.

Gotta admire you doing this. I'm hoping to get out and have some adventures on my 36-foot yacht around New Zealand this summer. Not sure I'll be doing any Mega passages like that one!

Watched part one and instantly subscribed. I hope you continue to take us on any travels, both sea and land you may take in life. Fantastic stuff. Not to mention, you have bigger balls than I....Takes a real man or woman to do what you do.

12:10 Cal Maritime's Golden Bear! I graduated from there a few years ago. Great memories sailing on that ship. Likely had a cadet calling you.

Dude, you're awesome. I enjoy your nonchalant reactions to things that go wrong or could've gone better, awesome attitude.

That's awesome. The golden bear is docked in the delta all the time and see it almost everyday. Never knew what it's purpose was. Small world. Weird. Safe travels.

Im 35 years old and am just getting into sailing. I have just booked a week long class with ASA school in Fort Lauderdale. Loved the video! My 10 year old son and I watched part 1 together. Will show him this one too. I was surprised your boat was only 27 feet. Everyone is telling me I need at least 35 feet to do any ocean crossings and as heavy as possible.

Check the Flicka 20, it is a 20 footer (18 at the waterline) made to cross oceans. You can do long passages in way smaller than 35 at the cost of comfort :)

Man I love the adventures on an old salty seadog and have been looking to expand. I definitely found my next channel to follow. My plan is to do this when I retire in 25 years like most people. It's so cool you are doing this at 19 instead of waiting until you're in your upper years!

I would love to do this. I'm thirty seven and would really need to get into sailing soon.
