I’d spend the $8 extra and take the train. I’ve seen videos of the boat ride and it looks like a version of travel torture.

Around 1hr to 1hr30 minutes, transportation to the Border town of Chiang Khong from Chiang Rai took the longest.. 😉

Hi to you both, I have just spent 5 days in Laos, travelled in my girlfriends brothers car they are from laos we drove to Nong Khai where we entered the border across the freedom bridge awfull experience not friendly at the border unhelpfull forms to fill in nobody to tell you which area you should go, I asked for a pen he moaned I forgot the date on my form as I filled it out he closed the sliding glass shutter and sat down made me wait 5 mins then I got charged 1800 baht for Laos visa permit I've travelled all over the world for work this border was worse than immigration in Nigeria I will try the border you crossed I want to travel through Laos on my motorbike, good luck with your channel wish you both a safe journey

We’re so sorry that you had a bad experience ☹️ Border crossings are a tricky thing and you have to be lucky aswell. This border was fine, there were some compilations for Zara but it’s something that we should have done better research for in advance but besides that everything went pretty smooth! Thank you for your wishes, let’s hope your next border crossing is a better experience :)

Also, make sure if you cross the border to Laos that your motorbike has more than +300cc. They do not allow smaller bikes! Very important! 😉

I think flying will be the easiest. Otherwise you would have to fly from BKK to Chiang Rai and take the bus from there. It will probably save you time and money to take the airplane 😉
