Chris, I am so glad that Ubiquiti is starting to remember who their customers are. I've used UniFi since 2018, and when they were doing this console push, I thought it might be time for a different alternative. I love my UDM Pro (which replaced my original USG that died), but let's be real! It has too many features for the average user. Sure UniFi Protect, Talk, etc are great features for those who need them, but I live in a small apartment, and it's overkill. These little Intel NUC-sized boxes are starting to refill that part of the market they seemed to be abandoning. I will keep my UDM Pro for now, but you better believe that if it dies, I'm getting one of these!

@@SpaceCadet4Jesus in my case, the detached garage is perhaps 50’ from the closest AP in the house. My g4 instant camera at the front of the garage has about 75’ and has to pass through all the structure of the garage and an exterior wall of the house. It’s connection is often tenuous. I’d like to improve that as well as add network ports for a camera and a small wired iot setup. An in-wall AC access point would be perfect for my situation.

@@somebody1869 I had an installation from a brick exterior concrete inner walls multi-level home (built in the 30's?) that needed internet into a detached garage make of concrete blocks. Even at the closest home window looking 25' to the garage, I test placed a new 4 antenna ASUS wireless router and found a variable -72dbm signal in the garage. YIKES! Solved it pretty easily though. Brought a pair of TP-Link AV2000 Powerline Adapter - 2 Gigabit Ports, Ethernet Over Power, Plug&Play, Power Saving, 2x2 MIMO (2 of them come in the box) and plugged them in, one inside the house somewhere and the other inside the garage. That gets them ethernet out to the garage and if they want wireless out there, they can add a wireless box. Works reliably and fast enough, now if they can get that pesky Chamberlain garage door cloud thingy working reliably.

So my take on this is that it's for the home user where they can have a Unifi eco system without requiring a cloud key or cloud controller. The UXG-Lite from last week is for those in the business / MSP space that have a cloud controller and they can then just hook it in. If you desire Talk, Protect or other apps, then you're looking at the CK and UDM devices. Fair statement? It could be suitable for my parents, where as I'll stay on pfsense.
@JohnDoe-bd5sz
@JohnDoe-bd5sz 10 ай бұрын
Another advantage of the UXG-Lite seems to be that it only uses 3-4 Watts compared to this one. If only they had put the controller functionality into the UXG lite and made it possible to power via PoE it would have been perfect But it seems that some of the lucky ones that got their hands on the UXG-Lite is already experimenting with a PoE inserter to make it PoE instead. Would be awesome to be able to eliminate yet another powerbrick.
@JeanPierreWhite
@JeanPierreWhite 10 ай бұрын
A comparison between UXG-Lite and the Express would make a good video. I learned the express limits you to 5 connected network devices (like switches or other express units) and 60 clients. This is limiting while the UXG-Lite does not have such limits because the controller is elsewhere. Another limitation is no IPS/IDS.
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 10 ай бұрын
The UXG Lite is equivalent to the USG - It is purely a gateway and does not have anything else. UXG Lite - No Wifi - No Unifi OS, requires a separate controller. UXG Lite DOES have IPS/IDS and will do Gigabit speeds even with these turned on. Unifi Express- All in one device. Gateway, WiFi 6, Unifi Controller/Unifi OS. Unifi Express does NOT support IPS/IDS at this stage. If you have a Unifi Controller already, get the UXG Lite as a gateway replacement. If you are doing a brand new install in a small network, use the Unifi Express if you don't care about IPS/IDS, Do not bother with the Express if you have a medium to larger sized network or require IDS/IPS functionality.

If I want to install something at a remote location like my parents house, I put a TP-Link Deco there, it's cheaper, the X50 Poe actually supports PoE in case I need it and it has 2.5G LAN and there are cheaper models with 1G and no PoE. It's feature limited compared to these unify units, but it's not as if my parents or other non technical users need any of that. Besides that, they would be able to manage the Deco sets themselves if needed because it's way less complicated.

Please tell me where they have a "plethora" of faster options, especially for people who can't do a full rack setup in their house. Given that fiber is rapidly expanding and even cable providers are offering over 1 Gbps, it's a bit disappointing. That design would be very easy. The biggest problem I can think of in doing the design is I do not have a device to measure. There do not seem to be decent top-down photos to accurately measure the radius of the corners, but presuming the photos on the website are accurate the rest is just a couple minutes in something like Fusion 360. Edit #2: The photo online is not quite scaling properly (the device height is about 9% taller than specifications if using the product images as a canvas), so I go back to my original statement that I would be far more confident doing a 3D model with a unit in hand to actually measure.

Hi Chris... i have a Unifi system in my apartment: USG + Switch 8-60W + Cloud Key + UAP AC-Pro i wonder if this Unifi Express could replace my original USG and CloudKey, and keep all the same functions/features.... i loved to know that with DPI it keeps the 1Gb/s, as my internet is 1Gb/s and my current USG is cutting it down. Hope you can address my doubt. Thanks.

It will not. It has no IPS / IDS packet inspection capability and only supports 5 additional devices.

Nice video , is the Unifi Express have a wireguard VPN client capability ? I would like to use it in a remote location , and be able to route all the traffic to my home network (UDM Pro) through Wireguard connection and also reach any device of my home network.

I have a few weird dead spots in my office. I’ve hardwired one access point but because of where the office not an option. This is exactly what I was looking for as I’ll put it somewhere that has the strong connection and then lock the devices that suffer from the dead spots to the express.

Good morning and awesome video! As an MSP I have one question, can I use this thing as a router and AP while managed through a self hosted unifi installation completely bypassing the internal controller?

Definitely a nice, entry level device. I have a hard time seeing the advantages of this over the Dream Router? The DR has a more powerful AP, additional Gb ports(half w/POE) and it's only $50 more.
@rafenden
@rafenden 10 ай бұрын
Lower power consumption is a good reason, 10W vs 20W which could be a deal breaker for RV users. You also cannot use UDR as an AP for your existing setup.

I agree. However the Express + Flex gives 4 POE and is only $50 more than UDR. It is great to see many different entry level options/paths depending on what is needed for a small environment.

Hi Chris, I'm from Holland and based on this, I bought this one for our Airbnb condominium on Curaçao. Just for the remote managebiliy and the experience I already have with Ubiquiti. The express will keep things simple. By default there is a fibre internet contract from the HOA but it would be nice to have a 4g or 5g back-up. How would I do that and keep it simple? I thought of using the new mobile router in combination, and connecting this to the fibre and then the express. Or are there other options? Maybe a nice topic for a video 😊

I guess I missed why I would use this rather than just an AP if I want to get more coverage from my UDM SE powered network, but also I completely get that it is not aimed at me - I would never buy this for myself, but I WILL recommend it to anyone who might ask me what to buy rather than use an ISP provided router / WiFi access point as it is clearly a gateway drug to the Unifi ecosystem and the obvious choice for someone starting out in Unifi

At about 5:35 you start mentioning a reference to Gateway Lite, that it’s limiting throughput when using dpi? I thought that’s exactly what the Lite doesn’t do compared to the old USG? Would you mind explaining that?
@dhsemp

Not sure where he got that information from. The new UniFi Gateway Lite does run IPS / IDS at near line-rate (1Gbps) speeds. The Express does not - in fact, it has no IPS / IDS capability whatsoever.

Hello! I love your vids. I just picked up a Unifi Express. I am wanting to use it as a wired AP for now. I have it plugged in using a POE splitter to a ethernet run that I get about 940mbps symmetrical on with testing plugged into my mac. The fastest I'm getting out of the Express as an AP is about 150. Is there something in the settings I'm missing or any other suggestion to make it even kinda worth while as a wired AP? Thanks!

I have an ISP router from which a 16-port switch is connected, and there are 4 access points (basic, LAN) spread throughout the house (DHCP is on the ISP router). If I connect this equipment in place of these access points, can I have functions like multiple Wi-Fi networks, or does there need to be a main one that connects to the others? I want to keep everything on the same LAN to facilitate functions like casting, Plex, etc.

I'd need some device that can connect itself via LTE and a VPN to my home network, tho the data plan on there is limited. I only need it to read some solar stats and want to use a Onion Omega2 LTE so far tho couldn't properly get it configured yet, especially cause a VPN connection by itself seems to require too much data already and would use up the 10GB per year IoT card I got pretty fast.

I feel like this is their answer to Cisco Meraki’s remote site/managed networks for telecommuters (Z series) or a basic business router for remote sites. Basically, the large benefit to these is that they have the capability to be remotely managed and can be setup as a VPN client device.
