Hello @ApexOneIT, I love your videos and I learn a lot. Sorry for my grammar, I use a translator because I am Spanish. I intend to update my home network. I have gigabit fiber internet. I would like to update a network so that it lasts at least a few years since technology advances very quickly. I am not very expert in networks but you explain it very well and I am learning. My intention to do it once is to put a Cloud Gateway Max, a Pro Max 16 Poe switching (for future connections) and a pair of U7-Pro APs. I have more than 50 home automation accessories, most of them with WiFi. If in the future the internet provider changes to 2.5 or 5 or 10 gigabit, I will be prepared, that is my intention. What do you recommend? I am right.

Just one mention from my side. I run UCG Max for about some weeks now. Got it as it got out. This thing gets really really hot, especially on the side, where you see those ventilation shafts. What helped me was to position this thing vertically. But i ended up placing a noctua 120mm fan on that thing. Also: if you place it vertically the mini display will also turn. Thats a nice feature.
@cue03
@cue03 2 ай бұрын
How much has the 120mm fan helped the temps? Did you perform a before/after? Are you using all the ports and multiple features such as ids/ips, firewalls and vlans or is it a relatively flat simple network? Are cameras currently in your coming figuration writing to the nvme drive?

@@cue03 Hey there! Yes, i did before and after. Without the fan and device positioned horizontally the temps were around 75 - 79 Celsius. Without doing hardly anything. After i flipped the thing vertically the temps dropped to 65-66 with also doing nothing. After i configured my network (multiple vlans, VPN, IDS/IPS on 3 Networks enabled, almost 40 individual fw rules, 3 additional unifi devices) the device was sitting at around 80 Celsius again horizontally. After i put the fan on the device itself, the temps are now stable at around 58 - 60 Celsius. Sadly i dont have any camera yet, but will order shortly.

Thanks for this video. I'm looking to replace an eero network in a 3,300 sf house. I want better admin controls and security. Current ISP coax cable feeds my Arris SB8200 modem but there is no ethernet for PoE anywhere in the house. Speed is only 500 Mbps but 1G fiber is coming. Am I correct in thinking that a UCG Max can replace the eero router and 2 or 3 U7-Pro Wall access points (with a PoE Adapter for each) would work? I don’t care if it’s a bit of overkill. I don’t think I need a switch since 4 ports are available on the Max for a VOIP phone and wireless printer. Thanks!

What I don't understand is the new Cloud Gateway Ultra and Max use a "Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz" while the older CloudKey Gen2 Plus uses an "Octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 based chip APQ8053 at 1.8 GHz (up to 2.2GHz per core)". Now the CloudKey isn't a gateway/router, yet it has a more powerful version of the processor. Feels like UniFi cheaped out on the processor for the new Cloud Gateways.

Been running mine for a few weeks. The downside right now is the lack of low end 2.5G switches in the Ubiquiti lineup to pair with it. The enterprise 16 switch at almost $500 is way too high end for most needs this gateway will be handling. (Home 1 gig internet / fiber.) Additionally my particular ISP would have preferred to drop straight into a fiber SFP which is not an option here, so I had to get a media converter SFP to Ethernet. The USW Ultra needs a 2.5G version. It’s a great option for distributing 1G and boatloads of PoE (cameras) but it’s a swing and a miss for high internal data rate while mixing in a 1G fiber connection. For most folk if they don’t need massive PoE, the Lite 8 is a better option because it’s Layer 3 and the Ultra is only Layer 2. Great box. It needs the supporting switch made.

Always depends on use-case. Which is why it's great to have several options. Even the UDM-SE is not best for business use. The built-in ports don't have the same features as a separate PoE switch. Notability, link aggregation.

The Max sounds like a great product if it could connect directly to the new U7 pro with 2.5 and power it through POE. Lacking this feature is a huge miss, which could have been solved if there would have been an Max Switch with 2.5 and POE. However that doesn’t exist either unless you want to buy enterprise at enterprise prices. The form factor of the 16 port switch is too large to match with the UCG max. People who buy maxes want to avoid needing a rack.

You'll want to go with U7 wireless access points if you really get those internet speeds. And you'll want your PoE switch to be 2.5GbE. So that should be at minimum the Pro Max 16 PoE that has 4x 2.5G PoE ports included. That's assuming you need 4x wireless access points. You may get away with 2 or 3 access points though with something like a U7 Pro Max. For the Gateway, you'll want the UDM Pro Max if you'll be using full IDS/IPS which then throttles your internet down to 5Gbps. The UDM Pro gets you down to 3.5Gbps which is why you wouldn't want that. store.ui.com/us/en/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/udm-pro-max?a_aid=Apex&chan=yt

I already have a 2-month old UCG-Ultra and was looking to add Protect with 2 2k cameras. Curious which of these 2 options you would recommend for adding Protect. Option 1: Keep UCG-Ultra, get the Cloud Key for $249 (the $199 one is no longer available) Option 2: Sell UCG-Ultra, get UCG-Max (no storage or the 500GB one). Hopefully, I can sell the Ultra for $100, so this would be a $279 - $100 solution. And then I can buy a 1TB SSD later for $50 - $80. Price-wise, these cost about the same +/- $20, but system design-wise, I have 2 separate devices for Network and Protect so that allows me to scale different devices as need. I'm leaning towards Option 1 but curious if you had a suggestion. Thank you!

I don’t like the hassle of selling. Since you already have the Ultra, I would do what you suggest with Option 1. Nice to have separate devices for future upgrades. And you could save $50 to get the CloudKey+ with the HHD instead. Try bhphotovideo.com to see if they have it in stock.

Although it may run "all" the unifi apps, you have to be aware that these compact gateways are only suited for small deployments, even smaller than the UDM Pro. If you run Protect, Network and one of the other apps at the same time, they do get a bit slower with performance and this will need to be taken into account when considering these devices. It's great to see Unifi releasing more devices, but I would still consider a separate gateway and controller installation if you have more than half a daozn unifi devices. Unifi do have some good options now compared to what they use to have. It is good to see them finally bring their gateway selection up to scratch. By the way. The "no storage" option doesn't come with the SSD sled, so that is something to consider.

At the first presentation I was super happy to buy the UCG-MAX-2TB. Then I have read some comments on KZbin about the hot temperatures due to fanless construction. And now is out-of-stock. In Italy the store present UCG-MAX-2TB at 540€ and the UDM-PRO+8TBHDD at 707€ (or 527 if you buy a 2TB HDD on Amazon). Hard choise. Considering also the fact that I have always been in Ubiquiti family for a long time and these are super devices up to 10 Gbit link even if my ISP max rate is 30 Mbit (I live in mountain Italy, I can switch to Starlink to gain 150-200Mbit but this isn't the point). I don't know how to do.

@@marinicallcc They don't run too hot, about the same as other unifi fanless equipment. Unifi's fanless stuff always has run warm, even the USG did a bit. It's not concerning though as the components used by UI are high quality and last the long term. Personally, I would say don't buy the 2TB version. Get the cheapest version without storage, even if you need to pay Unifi $20us for the SSD tray, then buy your own SSD to go into it. They can take many different sizes of SSD's, including different physical sizes, and UI charge a ridiculously high amount for even a 2TB SSD on top of the price of the device with no storage included. As a note, these are only up to 2.5gbps as they have 2.5gbps WAN and LAN, but if your ISP is capped at 30mbps, I'd go for the cheaper UCG Ultra or run your own controller and get the UXG Lite. If you want to use Protect, then I believe the UCG Ultra can run Protect, but I can't remember if it had internal storage or needed external storage. The UDM Pro is a different device, but the original UDM Pro is not a lot more capable than the UCG Ultra and Max, when you consider all the LAN ports on the UDM Pro are 1gbps and the processor only supports about the same number of cameras in Protect. The UDM MAx would be a better option if you wanted rack mount and to go bigger. UDM Pro/SE/Max also have fans, so you need to consider the noise, though the active cooling would be keep things running cooler

Long term, the UDM is better. UCG Max seems to get quite hot. Especially if it won’t be sitting on a desk in a nice cooled room. And, like you said, with full IPS you’ll never get 2 gig. Although, you’ll most likely never saturate that 2 gig WAN I assume unless you’re really peak transferring massive amounts of data over the internet-but that’s a different question. The 2.5 gig LAN ports will work just fine if you have something like a server that can actually use that.

It's a cool device for smaller/home installations that want both UniFi Network + Protect, it's just unfortunate how much they're charging for storage, esp given they use relatively cheaper Kingston drives in them. It's also very disappointing that the no-storage variant does not come with a storage sled, preventing you from using your own drive without first buying one of theirs. It's a scummy up-sell tactic on Ubiquiti's part. I hope that changes in the future or they at least sell the sled at a reasonable price (it really should be included though). I'm waiting for some kind of UDR refresh (maybe a UDR Max) that I can easily recommend to friends/families, my home is already full UniFi but it's hard to recommend their current line-up for homes, at least if you need cameras too.

That’s some fast internet! You’ll need a Unifi gateway that supports a 10G WAN connection. Then, you’ll need a 10G network switch. A minimum, the switch would be the USW-Flex-XG. $300. This one has the regular RJ45 Ethernet ports. Or, it’s easier to just get the Aggregation switch that has 10G SFP+ ports. This one you can connect directly to your Unifi Cloud Gateway. That’s what I would do. In terms of the cloud gateway that you need: at minimum UDM-Pro. That can handle 10g internet but only without threat detection. If you turn that on, it will go down to 3.5G. A UDM-Pro-Max will get you 5G with full threat detection. But if you want full speed 10g internet without compromise, you’re looking at the EFG. It’s a pretty $2k. store.ui.com/us/en/category/cloud-gateways-enterprise-scale/products/efg?a_aid=Apex&chan=yt

So how would the UCG cloud max handle 8 camera's and ips/ids on a 1Gb link with 8 users behind it. as Well as having 2-3 Wireguard VPN Connections. Is it powerful enough to handle all this. or should you look at something else..
@ApexOneTech
@ApexOneTech Ай бұрын
It can handle that. But be sure the UCG Max is not tucked away in a warm closet but in a cooled room. And, consider how you want that Protect data recorded. With 8 cameras, you definitely won’t get any significant 24/7 recordings. It would be recordings based on AI detections and motion. Btw, that happens on the camera itself.

How much sqft do you need to cover? You might be okay with a UniFi Express (UX) and a CloudKey+ (for your NVR). It depends how many cameras you want to add. If you want an alternative to the UCG-Max, at your internet speed, you'll be fine with a UDR. There is a big limitation on the number of cameras though.

@ApexOneTech
@ApexOneTech Ай бұрын
If you only need Unifi for camera security, and not networking, you can consider the CloudKey+ or UNVR instead. The NVR is room for full size hard drives and can work with your existing, non-UniFi network. However, if you want ongoing full UniFi, this cloud gateway max would great. Just realize that if you turn on 24/7 recording on all the cameras you listed, the 1TB won’t give you much playback history. I haven’t put 7 cameras on the UCG Max yet so I can’t tell you how many days of footage you’ll get. But, if you’re okay with only recoding smart detections, then this would be a perfect solution.

So my current setup is a Zyxel USG110 router going to a 24 port POE switch, and from that comes out my Unifi Gen 1 Cloud key and 2 access points. Am I understanding that this UCG MAX would replace my Zyxel, and Cloud Key? If so, can I transfer my customizations I made to my Zyxel to this as I have a static IP and need to access things within my network from outside?
@ApexOneTech

Yes, it’ll replace your cloud key and your router. Just setup your cloud gateway max with the same settings or whatever settings you need. Since you’ll be replacing both your router and cloud key, I would set up the UCG Max from scratch. You can backup some UniFi application config files though if you’ll like and restore to the UCG Max.

Yeah, you definitely can. You just can't manage the third-party switch from the UniFi dashboard but you'll see the devices connected downstream. And, yes, also can add the Asus router as an access point. You'll have limitations though so eventually, you'll go down the UniFi rabbit hole and get all their equipment ;)

I'm so sad and disappointed to see this device. It would have been perfect, if it wasn't for its software suite which horribly lacks modern traffic SHAPING capability that other devices such as the Mikrotik routers via RouterOS, and Netgate via pfSense+, or EdgeRouter (UISP) offer out of the box. For me, to be unable to fine tune my own network traffic other than by setting hard limits is unacceptable. So I will never buy into this underwhelming ecosystem until Ubiquiti/UniFi ups its game.
