Those red dogs really learn quickly, lol. They can get right in between the adults and sneak some. I certainly hope that Big Joe isn't shooting blanks, because he's a really handsome guy and should produce really good calves if he isn't sterile.

Are all Bison calves called Red Dogs? I’m new to the channel and I’m trying to learn all I can. Any answers will be appreciated. ✌️
@Cricket27312 жыл бұрын
@@southernmomma5832, from what I've read, the young bison have been called "red dogs" for ages. This is applicable only to American & Canadian Bison.
@dakotawinds92912 жыл бұрын
@@southernmomma5832 the native american indians called them red dogs (moon of the red dogs = month when calves are typically born in the wild) due to their size at birth and they are always that reddish color when born, by the time of weaning you start to see that color shed out to the more darker brownish black color as adults. The "white man" picked up on the name due to that. If a white calf were born you would see 4 color fazes before the final adult color. Do a search for "Miracle the white bison" her story is interesting though sad and will give more insight into bison especially the true white bison (not those crossed with Charolais to get the white gene in the pool) which is very very rare.

sorry faith will never trump science. If tested and comes back almost sterile it is what it is. Weather he keeps Joe or doesn't will be strictly based on a business decision. I would hate to see him processed but better to process and donate the meat to those less fortunate than sit in some pasture costing money in feed and medical bills (vaccines, worming's etc.) not many options left for a bull of his age and not able to produce calves. Hoping just a lower count on the swimmers and not fully blanks, Dusty could pair him up with a couple of the best cows in a smaller pen for breeding if he wants to try for a replacement bull from his lines (if he does not have one yet out of him) if he wants to and Joe is not shooting 100% blanks.

I was wondering about his breeding capability; I’m glad that you’re getting it figured out. The last thing that you need is a bull shooting blanks. Keep us updated on this issue! The heat that you have down there is torturous! I was really hoping that the drought would break this year. It’s great that the bison have those trees; they are going to serve them well through the heat of summer.

@debbarnes79532 жыл бұрын
Great question. I'd like to know as well.
@hillockfarm84042 жыл бұрын
Question 1 is if the 2 calves are even his. Causes : genetic, disease, mineral deficiency, injury making jumping on painfull, incompatible with the female(s) and it may be a feed problem (soil short on something or way to high on something) that makes the cows lose the pregnancy. Drought can cause such things, stress can cause such things. But yes first step is to check health in the bull and confirm if the 2 calves are really his and therefore that he has succesfully bred before. So he can/could and knows how.
