BODY POSITION FOR STEEP HILL CLIMBS? Rough rule of thumb? As it gets steeper you are still in the default position but just squat more to lower the centre of gravity. Or if sitting on the seat, slide forward. Leaning over the bars is only for when it's very steep and must be done to avoid a backflip. I base this on training with Chris Birch we did years ago. Other enduro trainers may disagree of course... Our body position vid can be seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoe3aK16eb-nkNk

Just back from a few days in the Lake District, UK. A lot of the trails there are covered in hardcore to protect from constant water damage and abuse, so some of the steepest switchback climbs don't have any solid ground, just a bed of sharp rocks ranging from snookerball to football in size. I was trying to do it all stood up and didn't realise how energy-sapping this is, constantly fighting the front end as you get bounced off line, getting out of shape, pulling the clutch a little to regain it but losing all momentum, not wanting to dab, releasing the clutch but realising you've a million revs on and lurching out of control again and gradually wearing yourself out. Then you stall and your bike's ancient and only has kickstart... Aaaah take me back.

This video is more than outstanding, it is ''as usual''... :) (This is the ultimate compliment, by the way) I have seen a video on Tim Coleman channel yesterday. It takes some courage and humility to ride with this young, self conscious rider. He is much too good for us all and he seems to be aware of it. The problem is that being too good on a dirt bike may lead to a inflated ego, and the terrible consequence is that one will never reach the illumination of the Buddha. You can't have it all...

@gncc1race8 жыл бұрын
hello jaja I've got a set of studded knobs too. They work great on ice, but they don't work in snow of any real depth. When conditions are right, when we get a thaw followed by a freeze, the snow pack gets hard and icy. Then with studs you can ride as if it were summer! Except of course for the cold...

You guys are really good with the skills. I have an up hill climb I am trying to do. It's clay and lots of rain lately ( I am sure I could do it if it was dry) and the track is full of those cool tree roots and swerves through the trees. The problem I found was keeping the momentum up, but avoiding the tree roots throwing the front wheel up in the air and off to the side towards the trees. I will take a video next time I am there and would really appreciate some advice.

Got any advice to help with front wheel deflection? I've been practicing a lot of loose rocky stuff lately, including this one long steep hill climb, and I find my biggest issue is the front wheel going places I don't want it to. It is an old IT 465, in pretty good condition with a recent front fork rebuild (the guy who rebuilt it set it up for when I was a bit heavier). Not sure if any of that plays a part? Cheers!

I think you'll find it in our various vids about riding in rocky terrain, Heath. It'll mainly be body positioning, I suspect.

@crosstrainingenduro8 жыл бұрын
discussed in the latest vid, hadrian. no more dangerous than a sudden deflation with tubes from a large hole imho. they aren't dot approved in the usa. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIPGe5qemtuWgac
@crosstrainingenduro8 жыл бұрын
oh and i'm not sure if the DOT approval is actually a legal necessity in the USA or just something that would help their sales. i have read that the process is very expensive and as a small company they decided not to bother.
@hadrianhaine52048 жыл бұрын
CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS cheers for the reply mate. I am in NZ so the US rules don't mean too much to me, but how ever the local constablery can order ones bike off the road if riding with knobs with out the DOT stamp but they wouldn't have any idea what's inside a tyre. and many police officers are unaware of the rules anyway. but we are required to get yearly Warrants Of Fitness (like the British not) if the vehicle is 2000 or newer and 6monthly if older. and this is where many kiwis with dual sports enduros and adventure bikes get caught out. cheers for the reply. keep up the good work.

0:43 - I disagree that that you should squat lower to keep your rear wheel weighted when the front wheel comes up. That extra traction and the weight distribution will cause your front wheel to come up faster and flip the bike. You need to shift your weight forward until the front wheel comes back down and then back again. go back and forth as needed.
@crosstrainingenduro3 жыл бұрын
The key is in the preview pic, John... hill climb basics. As it gets very steep you do need to move all the way forward but I think beginner riders will be a fair way off that.

most of us are in our 50s and that's what we learned too. nowadays the only time the top riders move forward is if it's so steep they can't stop the bike flipping.
