This is a solid video. Just a general tip for every checkering job: it is absolutely IMPERATIVE that the angle at which the cutter is maintained is as close as possible to 90 degrees (straight up) relative to the surface being checkered. Avoiding oblique angles keeps your checkering straight and sharp.
@CRoutdoor10 ай бұрын
I agree 100% with the advice on the 90 degree angle. I have a diy checkering cradle that definitely helps with that, but I find just the bench top more convenient. Just gotta be more careful with it. I really appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.

I'm about to do a checkering on a Browning A5, fore-end. Just transferring the Pattern took over two hours. It raps all the way around the bottom, so it's going to be a real challenge for me. It's the first one I've ever done from scratch. I have gone over some checkering that got smashed on another gun some years ago, but the basic lines were there. If it comes out as good as yours did, I'll be happy.

It's a long, slow process, but so worth it. Just take your time and I'm sure it will come out great. Best of luck! Thanks for watching and commenting.

How does it feel in your hand, does it grip like checkering originally cut? thanks for sharing.

Grip feel is a huge improvement. I'd say it feels just as good as any originally checkered stock. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Great video! Have you ever attempted cutting pressed checkering that has a skip line embedded? I’m working on a 1960’s Remington 700 stock with 20 lpi and a skip line every 5. (Rather than a true skip its more like a wider depression line than the regular lines. the skip line is about 1.5 x wider than the regular lines, so its hard to keep consistent spacing as I work across the pattern. Probably not the best project to learn checkering on 😕. Got any suggestions?
@CRoutdoor9 ай бұрын
I've never done anything with skip lines but it sounds like you've got quite the project. The only thing I would recommend is finding a more specific tool that fills that need better than just the standard tools. Sorry I can't be much more help. I hope it turns out great and let me know. It might help others searching as well Thanks for watching and for your comment.

@@vinnitca1990 I personally think it looks better, it feels better, gave me an opportunity to learn something and gain respect for the process, it's a project for if you're bored, and it gave me content for a video for something I didn't really see represented on KZbin yet.
