This is great! In the process of checkering a “practice stock”. I need some advice. Do you checker before or after stock refinish?

Checking is done after finishing. You then brush in the finish with a brush similar to a tooth brush.

Do you have any recommendations kn where to buy a cheap checkering tool. I've inherited a 300 win mag and was hoping to restore the finish, while doing so I'd also like to retouch the checkering.
