I use FLITZ. The best polish I have ever used and I'm a 26 trucking veteran. I've been through hundreds of different types of polish but FLITZ is the best by far! No prepping, or sanding necessary as long (as it's already smooth) and get a dremel amd start polishing away.

I'd guess that half of all feed issues aren't so much mechanical, as they are THIS right here, it's one place that manufacturers save money, especially on budget models. I do this, to a minor degree on every firearm I've ever owned(that had a ramp), and I've yet to have a feed issue I can blame on the weapon. Currently, my G3C had very minor issues with hesitant feeds(never failed, just the feel was off), it was 100% a fault on the feed ramp, I think it took me 5 minutes to fix, and hundreds of rounds later I still love the little pistol, and have 100% confidence in it. You do not need a razor sharp entry to the ramp btw, that alone could create problems with any lead tip defensive rounds, or lightly crimped rounds depending on your firearm, and feed angle. Don't forget that little bit of work on the entry also helps with extraction! Regardless of the firearms price, I would always inspect, and pay some attention to it, if applicable.

i bought a g3c as my first pistol. 9 times out of 10 it will fail to feed any kind of hollow point, it obviously gets caught on the feed ramp. any FMJ its 100% fine never fails.. just hollows.. going to polish it and hope it helps lol
@TerminalM193
@TerminalM193 Жыл бұрын
Ask any competent gunsmith if polishing the feed ramp to a striker fired pistol helps. Every single one of them will tell you absolutely not and that you're now introducing more points of failure. It's purely esthetic. If your firearm isn't feeding its not because of a feed ramp. The only time this will work hand in and is specific 1911 or similar pistols and that's just to further insure the feeding of defensive rounds.

Chamber polish on a pistol might be okay (I don't know), but on a rifle chamber it's advised against because the chamber texture helps grab and hold the casing lessening bolt head fatigue/damage and it assists in the sealing of the chamber preventing gas blowback.

I just spoke with HK about my MR762 experiencing some FTF’s due to the nose jamming into the ramp and that was one of the 3 things they suggested, polishing the feed ramp, that they’ll do if I end up sending it in (along with all the other checks, recoil spring etc.)

I just purchased a new 9mm Taurus G3C for my daughter. As I was polishing the ramp and other components - and repeating a 100 round firing - I remembered this video and thought to view it again. I cannot resist restating what I commented over a year ago - this makes an AMAZING difference. This new gun worked flawlessly during a 100 round test when I unboxed it. However, after polishing, the action worked much faster and feed flawlessly. In addition, the action was much quieter. I have no hesitation handing this over to my daughter to use as her EDC.

On 1911s I also polish the extractor hook, by hand. Wrap a needle file with a cleaning patch that has been charged with the polishing compound and work it inside the hook and the lower edge where the rim feeds up into the hook. I do this, and use Wilson Combat mags, and every 1911 that has had this treatment works perfectly after that.

How does polishing the chamber not change the actual characteristics of the chamber? If the chamber is at the limit of spec, by polishing it you are oversizing the chamber. Will this not create the chance for ruptured cases and gas blowing back?

When your polishing the chamber you are not removing enough material to cause any issues, your going with very very fine grit polishing compound.

Polishing the feed ramp seems to be a good idea since it may get dirty from the rounds brushing up against it and the factory may not have put in as much care to do this job, now then; the chamber maybe something different, do you think the engineers who designed the barrel did not take into account the fact the round casing was going to expand as it was fired? That to me is a little questionable. To me I would only do that if I was getting some problems with the round being pulled out and causing something like a stovepipe or smokestack situation.
@TheHobbyGunsmith
@TheHobbyGunsmith 4 жыл бұрын
you are partially right. the chamber does not get done at the factory because its a extra step/process that adds additional cost to manufacture, and we all know manufactures are looking for highest profit possible even if it means cutting a corner or two. now if your getting something custom built by hand by a dedicated gunsmith, i guarantee you all of this would be done before you are presented with your new firearm.
@micahwest5347
@micahwest5347 3 жыл бұрын
The engineers aren’t the ones cutting corners to keep the cost down. It’s the CEOs that keep you from getting a polished chamber and feed ramp from the factory.

Just did this tonight. I used the conical bob you used on the ramp, and I used mothers. However, my conical felt bob was kind of the hard felt one. Same color as yours, but I'm hoping I didn't dope it up by using the harder felt bob, or does it make no difference? I just got the mirror finish to show on the ramp and chamber interior a bit, and lower RPM and less time than you did. Subbed by the way, sir. Hi i bought a brand new glock 17 recently and after about 200 rounds i noticed some of the black paint on the feeding ramp is chipping away, i have only had 4 mus feeds but im almost certain it was caused because of me slowly cocking back and then pushing the slide forward with my hand instead of letting it slam home, but i was also wondering if i should finish finish sanding off the rest if the paint in the feeding ramp just to make it smoother and avoid any future mis feeds?

If its original glock parts its Tenifer not paint so it shouldnt be flaking, wearing off the finish yes from the rounds sliding up the ramp. but if its flaking chances are its been refinished. but to answer your question yes you can just polish that out and you will be fine.

@TheHobbyGunsmith 7 ай бұрын
its a as needed process, for the most part in my experience its a once and done type of deal unless you have heavy powder build up which would be very unlikely if you clean and service your equipment as normally needed.

Holy! Your shield feed ramp has the EXACT same little dimple in the EXACT same spot as mine! I have 1 other shield and so does my mother and a few friends and when I see one I would always ask to see their feed ramp. There's have always been perfect. Your dimple is quite litteraly in the exact same spot as mine.

Thank you so much for this video. Very helpful. Simple and straight to the point. I've just ordered a nice dremel, a set of bobs and compound. Looking forward to polishing up my feed ramps and chamber mouthes on some old guns that need it badly. Very nice detail on this. I wish more people made videos as good as this. I do have one question. Is there a way to clean the felt bobs for reusing them, or once they are used are they pretty much spent?

I would toss them. They get really nasty and I can't see it getting clean again. You'll love the results of the polish. I did mine months ago and am going to do some more of my weapons. There's also polishing of other internals, you'll find lots on KZbin. Good luck.

Most felt bobs start breaking down and especially if you're polishing brand new factory fresh parts, they tend to be very sharp and precise which will start making the Bob spray little bits of the felt everywhere and you don't want that in your gun

Your chamber may be rough (doubt it) but it’s symmetrical. If you polish it incorrectly as most will do, it won’t be symmetrical. I would not do the chamber.

How do you clean off the bobs, removing the black coating?
@TheHobbyGunsmith
@TheHobbyGunsmith Жыл бұрын
I normally either use a small file or rasp to knock off the black if it gets too heavy. or another option knife scraping. but only if it get super caked on. other than that i don't really clean them much i just swap them out.

You'd think that gun companies would hire actual engineers, who know that the feedramp has to be polished? Or maybe they know something this guy doesn't know. (SMFH)

All new guns I've bought, the feed ramps are shiny but not polished. Most of the time it's just the assembly oil they leave on the gun to prevent corrosion during storage. I know it's not necessary, but I de-grease and polish ALL mating surfaces on my gun. Even makes my Keltecs run like a Lexus.

Polishing the feed ramp is good, but inside the chamber is not recommended, according to professional gun smiths, a mirror finish like chamber doesn't help seal the pressure when firing.and puts more pressure on the slide.
@TheHobbyGunsmith
@TheHobbyGunsmith 3 жыл бұрын
the purpose of polishing the inside of the chamber is not to seal. the purpose is the help extract the spent casing once fired as the casing expands against the walls of the chamber when fired and a smooth surface alleviates some home the work the extractor need to do to hold onto the case while ejecting. Think of it this way what's easier sliding on glass or sliding on sandpaper. P.S. i am a graduated professional gunsmith.

@@TheHobbyGunsmith I'm not trying to criticize your method, and I am not a Gun Smith, but I've read and heard from Profesional Gun Smiths and manufacturers specifically about guns warranty and what and what not to do, so you don't void your warranty and liability reasons, in terms of chamber mirror polishing a medium or course polish leaves a rough surface for the brass to grip. This in turn reduces bolt thrust which is safer and improved action longevity, also polishing the chamber could change the dimension and effect function, brass is relatively soft metal and expand and contract due to pressure changing, all manufacturers i know of do not mirror polish their chambers and do not recommend it for the reasons stated above, if you have extraction problems they need to be addressed , either by the manufacturer or a gun smith, chamber smoothness beyond what manufacturers recommendations, does not effect extraction, other issues do, like bad ammo, or reloads, or dirty gun, obviously you and others can do whatever you want, but I think if any one wants to work or modify their guns, they should research and consult with the gun manufacturer or a reputable gun smith just to be safe and avoid liability should something wrong happens, my intention is safety and nothing more, God Bless.

@@JazzLowrider No worries brother i did not take it as criticism, there is a lot of misleading information online. the sole purpose manufacturers do not polish chambers and feed ramps is very simple, eliminate a extra step and process to keep product cost down and increase profit. i will give you a perfect example and look this up online. lets say you have a Well know gun builder, and i don't mean manufacturer like big name brands i mean Skilled Gunsmiths tha build one off guns for clients whether it be for competition or just a high en build. one of the things automatically done on the build is feed ramp polish and chamber polish. its done for function and reliability. the extra step is done because its not about the profit margin its about the quality of work and product you as a skilled gunsmith want to put out for your customer. check with any gunsmith for service and its considered a reliability upgrade. again to each thier own but its the truth. do you really think the manufacture is going to tell you yea we dont do that to keep cost down to make more profit margins. obviously anything in excess is bad your not going to sit there with high grit compound trying to polish for an hour. but going with a very fine grit like Brownells grey 555 or flitz and just a quick polish is just fine your trying to make it smooth not change the dimensions by sitting there just going to town lol. hope this makes sense.
@JazzLowrider

@@TheHobbyGunsmith a couple of points from experience, as i said before feed ramps needs to be smooth, my experience with a kimber 1911 i had some feeding and extraction problems, I sent it back to kimber, under warranty they replace the extractor, polish the feed ramp, and the barrel throut but not the chamber, free of charge and I asked them about the chamber if it needs polish, thats the answer they told me what I stated in the previous comment, because they already polish the feed ramp and replace extractor, recoil spring, and they want the gun to be as reliable as possible, so I don't send it back again, and sure enough the gun has no problem at all after, that was almost 10 years ago, I just thought this should open people's eyes more a bout safety, as you know not everyone is good with the Dremel tool, because if it's not done correctly it could ruin the gun, keep up the good work, God Bless.
